PP_BOY_, w Amnesia: The Bunker's Halloween update plans to make this year's scariest game even more terrifying
@PP_BOY_@lemmy.world avatar

Does anyone have any suggestions for horror games that aren’t frustratingly difficult? I feel like with most horror games, the scare factor wears off after the second restart because game developers think that one-hit enemies and no weapons makes things scarier, but I disagree.

The last real horror game that I played was The Iron Lung and while it was great, the total game has almost no replay value and can be completed in under an hour.

SOMA is pretty good for that, it's got a mode where the monsters can't hurt you. I played on that mode and enjoyed it immensely for its story and environmental merits.

Tagger, w Fables creator places Wolf Among Us universe in public domain amid clash with DC over Telltale adaptation

anyone know of anywhere I can legally down load them now then?

kae,

That’s not how this works.

You’re free to create stories, video, of your own video game in the universe. If you chose to make that public domain and give it away for free, then good on you.

Others can create freely in this universe with their own expression, which they could charge for.

Much like how there are movies about Cinderella or Red Riding Hood which are under copyright, but the base story itself is in the public domain and free to use.

Tagger,

Right, that makes sense! Thanks!

What an awesome thing for him to do but I can’t pretend I’m not slightly disappointed to have a huge series of free comics to dive into.

clay_pidgin,

I recommend the Overdrive app. sign up (in the app, even!) for a library card (doesn’t necessarily need to be to your local library) and start checking the books out!

Tagger,

Thanks

clay_pidgin,

You betcha. I recommend it to people all the time.

jayandp,

It’s called Libby now, but still great advice.

clay_pidgin,

Oh right, thanks.

bpm,

Always worth checking if there’s more libraries you’re eligible for, for the best selection - I’ve got a card through my local library, one from the next town over (I just need to visit once a year to renew), and a town in California (Sunnyvale) that gives library accounts to anyone who applies. Some libraries will do digital-only accounts for like $20/Year, so that could be worth looking into if your local library doesn’t support Overdrive/Libby.

PM_ME_FEET_PICS,

The Wold Among Us universe is public domain. Not the mainline Fables universe.

gabereal,

incorrect.

As of now, 15 September 2023, the comic book property called Fables, including all related Fables spin-offs and characters, is now in the public domain. What was once wholly owned by Bill Willingham is now owned by everyone, for all time.

520,

You're misunderstanding what's happened.

The author has relinquished his copyright on the Fables universe. Every work based on it has its own copyright, however.

So while you can make your own stories in the Fables universe, it doesn't mean that things like The Wolf Among Us game from Telltale have had their copyrights affected in any way.

dumdum666, w Lessons Learned From Cyberpunk 2077's Terrible Launch And Hands-On With Phantom Liberty

So those people had lofty and unrealistic expectations, huh? I can only speak for myself and I can say: the game was ok - not great - but ok. The interesting Story helped me with the fact, that the city itself was essentially „dead“. But back to the expectations: Many of the really disappointed gamers expected a Cyberpunk GTA - which CD Project obviously did not deliver. Maybe those gamers will get a better experience soon - who knows.

Until then Cyberpunk will remain a stain on CDPRs reputation sheet for a lot of people.

Minnels,

This. I expected that walls were breakable and more interesting gear/level system in a world full of life. I had fun with the game since I did a lot of the hacking stuff which is a bit different from anything I have played.

I will revisit the game with the new patch since I have got a new graphics card since then and not tried a single raytracing game since then. Also looking forward to the updated skilltrees. % stuff is really boring and lazy design.

One exception is new product categories. They need to overcome the barriers to entry.

Once any product has an established user base, that’s when it will inevitably become shit.

PM_ME_FEET_PICS, w Starfield user score drops to "mostly positive" on steam

Steam has long since proven itself it be a useless metric to get any valuable statistics from.

It’s reviews have always been filled with memes, but especially now that reviews can be monetized.

Even poorly done negative reviews rake it a lot of Steam Points.

nanoUFO,
@nanoUFO@sh.itjust.works avatar

How can reviews be monetized also the overall score is what really matters and is far more trustworthy than any games reviewer. Oh you mean points, I still fail to see how that matters when a game has 10k+ reviews and some tiny portion of them are memes. There is literally nothing better in terms of reviews.

PM_ME_FEET_PICS,

Steam reviews are generally 90% memes or circle jerking.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint had mostly negative. The reviews all complain about either no achievements or the fact that the game was locked to their Ubisoft launcher first. Not real criticism of the game, especially considering most of what people complained about on release was fixed by the time it got put onto Steam.

It’s now 7 months later and it’s finally gone up to mixed with mostly positive reviews recently, despite no changes to the game.

Compare Breakpoint to Wildlands, it’s not as good previous game, all of the recent reviews are still circle jerking but posting positively.

As soon as Steam embraced the memes and shit reviews by adding a Funny button its reviews went to shit.

nanoUFO, (edited )
@nanoUFO@sh.itjust.works avatar

You do realize you are cherry picking right? The power of steam reviews it that it’s just users posting what they want and there is a score aggregate with cool tools that tell you if a game is being review bombed. There are plenty of very good reviews on steam and I use them all the time when going through my many thousands of wish listed indie games. Please don’t tell you me you think reviews done by “game journalists” getting early review copies and going to review events is better… on the whole. At least with steam reviews I know it’s people like me rating a game.

Coelacanth, w What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending?
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

Disco Elysium has a number of potential soft locks, though you kind of have to go out of your way to actually get into one. The easiest one is probably paying for your hostel room the second night. Usually a combination of decisions and unlucky dice rolls are necessary to actually get locked, and/or poor use of skill points (meaning you can’t spend one to re-try the crucial roll).

There is also a seemingly minor decision in a side quest that can make a certain check during the ending unwinnable and thus lock you out of one of the most impactful moments in the game.
