Holy cow, that’s huge. Fables is a very well-beloved universe, good on him for giving it to the public. I hope this opens the door for an adaptation of the comics. Alan Moore would be proud.
You’re free to create stories, video, of your own video game in the universe. If you chose to make that public domain and give it away for free, then good on you.
Others can create freely in this universe with their own expression, which they could charge for.
Much like how there are movies about Cinderella or Red Riding Hood which are under copyright, but the base story itself is in the public domain and free to use.
I recommend the Overdrive app. sign up (in the app, even!) for a library card (doesn’t necessarily need to be to your local library) and start checking the books out!
Always worth checking if there’s more libraries you’re eligible for, for the best selection - I’ve got a card through my local library, one from the next town over (I just need to visit once a year to renew), and a town in California (Sunnyvale) that gives library accounts to anyone who applies. Some libraries will do digital-only accounts for like $20/Year, so that could be worth looking into if your local library doesn’t support Overdrive/Libby.
As of now, 15 September 2023, the comic book property called Fables, including all related Fables spin-offs and characters, is now in the public domain. What was once wholly owned by Bill Willingham is now owned by everyone, for all time.
The author has relinquished his copyright on the Fables universe. Every work based on it has its own copyright, however.
So while you can make your own stories in the Fables universe, it doesn't mean that things like The Wolf Among Us game from Telltale have had their copyrights affected in any way.
Elder Scrolls Daggerfall was surely the peek of this, you get a letter at the start telling you to meet a woman in a bar on a set date - turn up too early and she won’t be there, but if you mess around on sidequests and don’t have enough time to travel there so are late then she’ll leave and the main quest never really happens.
There were a million other ways to lock your ability to progress but I always remember that, I don’t know if it was possible to get back on track but I don’t think so, I probably played a thousand hours before I did a run where I even started the main quest
I think it comes up with a little note on the screen telling you that it’s no longer possible to compete the game, you’d get that randomly in a dungeon too because two miles away a bad guy randomly died – belive it out not Todd Howard has got much better since 1996
FF7R was full game length but ended when the party left Midgar; in the original game that is a bit before the end of Disc 1.
Granted, the Midgar section was greatly expanded for the remake and it’s pretty clear that we’re not necessarily doing a 1:1 equivalence with the original game…
I think it will released into 3 parts: Remake, Rebirth and the third volume which I don’t think has been titled yet. What makes it even more confusing is that there was an “enhanced” version of FFVII Remake, released on PC and PS5, called Remake Intergrade.
I’ve only seen the first movie twice and not the second. When I went to Disney World a few years ago, I loved Pandora. The Flight of Passage ride was amazing. I had an emotional experience on it. You’re riding your banshee and then it comes to a stop and you feel it breathing against your legs. I suspended my disbelief for a second and teared up at that experience.
I may pick this game up, but the Ubisoft part has me worried. I’ll wait until after launch, but if the world is like that ride, I think I’ll have a pretty good time.
And screw anyone going ‘but then how money?!’ while it infects billion-dollar business models. There’s no amount of money you can pay, where greedy suits won’t imagine taking your money and selling your eyeballs.
There is an ethical advertising system that works well: opt-in catalogues. I love Costco’s monthly ads, IKEA’s catalogue, Amazon’s holiday shopping catalogue, etc. When I need something, I can browse and create a shopping list.
My problem with ads is that it tries to get me to buy stuff when I’m doing something where I don’t want to buy stuff, like watching TV, browsing the Internet, or playing a game.
A game engine isn’t the right place for ads. Leave that to storefronts and other areas where I’m already looking to spend money.
