This could be really good…

PonyOfWar, do games w Guild Wars Reforged Announcement Trailer

Huh, didn’t expect that to ever be a thing. I never played the original GW campaign, only Factions and Nightfall, so I guess this will be a good opportunity for me to finally play it.

Ok, apparently on steamdeck? Maybe I can give it a shot this time

I’ve hear good things about GW1, but never got to play it.

GW2 is my top favorite MMO, although I haven’t really played much recently, because due to the lack of gear treadmill it’s soo confusing to pick it up again when you stopped playing for a few expansions.

Will probably give GWR a try.

zerofk,

GW1 and GW2 are very different games. Don’t expect an MMO if you try GW1. You only see other people in cities, the world itself is made up of instanced zones. Only your party is there, and there’s a well-defined mission in each zone. Think of each zone as like a dungeon in an MMO.

That said, it is a great game. I prefer it to GW2, but I would guess that MMO players could be disappointed if they don’t go in with the right expectations.

Mikina, (edited )

That sounds kinda cool tbh. I’m mostly intrigued about the class system, although I’ve bever really looked into it.

It sounds pretty similar to Fellowship (although with an RPG part), though, and I’m loving that game.

Evolushan,

Due to the absence of gear treadmill… It makes it super easy to get back into. Unless I misunderstood your comment. But I just came back after no following SotO and VoE and I am pumped! Playing the whole story since the very start :)

Oh and with such easy access to legendary gear the gear treadmill is even flatter. Come to us, we welcome you!

Mikina,

If I’m getting back to a game with gear treadmill, I can just clean uo my inventory and start the next exoansion with a clean slate.

I have around 70% of the world cleared, several characters leveled to max, but I got through kike half of HoT and a bit of Path of Fire. I opened my full inventory that had a lot of random crafting stuff, consumables a a gew gear sets and I had no idea what’s anything for, or what am I even supposed to do next. Did a few quests then gave up in trying to sort it out, since it was just too overwhelming.

I’ll probably give it a try again, love thw game.

So some UI and audio updates?

Nice, have been wanting to play a bit again for a while now. :D

Funny that GW1 gets steamdeck/controller support before GW2.

C8r9VwDUTeY3ZufQRYvq,

I can’t imagine playing GW2 on a controller. I had to buy an MMO mouse to have more buttons to bind stuff to.

FFXIV works great with a controller, I don’t see why GW2 wouldn’t with a similar gamepad oriented UI.

etchinghillside,

Been doing it for a while - WvW and Open World it’s been great. I wouldn’t try and do raid rotations on it.

ZombieBait,

GW2 works surprisingly well on controller. I’ve been playing that way since launch, first with Xpadder and now with the Steam controller mappings. Inventory management and crafting are the only regular things I switch back to mouse and keyboard for.

I tried it a couple of years ago with the steam controller and the action camera. It works surprisingly well.

Well, now I know what I will be doing during the better part of my Christmas holidays.

I am admittedly still hoping for a proper Guild Wars 1 remaster or a successor that is more like GW1 in tone and game play. Maybe its nostalgia but the sequels plot and world building never reached the quality of the original game for me.

jedibob5,

I was always disappointed that they bound the skillbar to weapon types and removed secondary professions in GW2. The possibilities for character builds were virtually endless in GW1’s system, and you could make your character really feel like your own. I did play GW2 for a while, and it was fun in its own ways, but the original still holds much more nostalgia for me.

Here is more information.

guildwars2.com/…/announcing-guild-wars-reforged/

Apparently its not developed by ArenaNet but a smaller studio of former ArenaNet employees.

And Guild Wars Reforged isn’t about a one-time update; we plan to keep collaborating with our partners at 2weeks to make further improvements to the game in the future!

This sounds promising.

jjjalljs, do games w Guild Wars Reforged Announcement Trailer

I played GW1 back when it was new. I remember it being a lot harder than gw2, but I might’ve just been bad at it. Gw2 is very forgiving though.

Linktank, do games w 16 minutes of HyTale gameplay

Wasn’t that game cancelled?

carotte, (edited )

the game was bought back by Simon (the guy who owns Hypixel and sold the game in the first place) and it looks like it’s back in development!

RightHandOfIkaros,

Nah, its a game mode for Vintage Story now.

obinice,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

Look up the news from the past day or 2, it’s actually much more interesting than that!

The original founder (well, one of them) got the studio devs back together and bought the game back off the people he sold it to who had canned it, and now they’re back developing it.

Side note Vintage Story is rad :-D

Madu,

Still no controller support though :( I can’t play with KB/M and it just doesn’t work well with remapped buttons to a controller via steam. Really hope it gets added, have wanted to play it for a long time.

Happy about this. Been checking it every few months since it was announced, and the cancellation felt really shitty. It seems like it will be playable by the end of the year!

CosmoNova, do games w 16 minutes of HyTale gameplay

Just play Vintage story at this point. The development of this has been such a dumpster fire in terms of how the project has been handled from a top level from the very beginning that I don‘t have any hopes it will release in a decent state under its new old owner.

This is not true, development has stalled the past few years because Riot demanded they port it to a new engine, which was why it got indefinitely delayed and eventually cancelled

Things were moving well before that. The original developers took back control of the project and are back on track

Banrik,

I just think this is going to be a bit of a mess no matter what way it goes. People have such a different idea of what this game is now based on the riot drive.

& I can't help but think that's kinda the point of buying it, because you only need to sell it in one burst of hype to make a quick buck, look at cube world for example.

Also the game has been sold off once, if someone like M$ came knocking, even just to kill it, you think if he makes a huge profit off the purchase, he'll say no?

I think a lot of people have been waiting for this & the hype around it is just going to lead to disappointment.

azertyfun, (edited ) do games w 16 minutes of HyTale gameplay

So happy to see the game is not dead.

Combat and movement look fun and satisfying, graphics look amazing. So many moody areas, from gritty snowscape to colorful caves. Mojang could learn a thing or five from this trailer.

I do hope there will be more breadth of gameplay especially on the creative side so those promising exploration mechanics do not feel stale after a few hours of running around and blasting skeletons. That’s one thing mojang does get right, if anything they have too much breadth and not enough depth.

Not sure about the ease of movement when scaling multiple blocks. Figuring it how to get from point A to point B with the limited movement options is a core part of most Minecraft gameplay loops, especially when caving and/or fighting. Seems they made up for it with good fighting mechanics, but they will have to make up for it in the other gameplay loops as well.

Either way I wish them the best and hope they light a fucking fire underneath mojang’s ass.

EDIT:

This is the original legacy engine from the 2018 trailer, running on a four-year-old build as we push Hytale forward again.

Now hold the fuck up. What do you mean this is the 2018 engine? What the fuck have they been doing the past 7 years? Did they rewrite a whole new engine for no good reason? It looks fucking beautiful and seems to run great! I’m sure they had their reasons, and I don’t think we can draw accurate conclusions by speculating, but the insider perspective on the development cycle must be absolutely wild.

EDIT2: Okay their blog post explains quite a bit more. Seems to paint a picture that Riot wanted the engine to be cross-platform (makes sense for consoles) and they could not make it work with a full rewrite away from their otherwise functional Java/C# engine. Kind of a crazy play on Riot’s part to make Java/C# devs and former minecraft modders write a modern game engine from scratch in C++ if that’s the case. Probably a tough lesson to learn for everyone involved. If only they could learn from an incredibly popular voxel-based building/aventure game that went through the exact same engine rewrite away from a GC VM language and faced similar struggles.

As a PC player, great news that they’re sticking to .NET and Java. It will make modding much easier.
