I tend to go back to one of the beta versions from time to time so it’s interesting to see the final one - it’s both extremely familiar and pretty different at the same time. It might not be as good of a product as Terraria but I always had a soft spot for this game.
I doubt I can provide any tips for this version but I hope you have fun with it.
Funny that you say that. I opened the comments to mention how the final version never felt right to me. One aspect is that the final door is open from the beginning of the game. In my first (early access) playthroughs, the final door stayed closed until the story opened it.
I even played without frackin universe and it was still open on a new playthrough. I really hope it was my files and not a game change. Frackin universe build paths also got way worse and unnecessarily complicated over time, but that’s a different story.
I have much more good to say than bad about the game, but it felt better when I played back in 2016 for the first time and in 2018 with the mod.
I can’t say much about the final version since I didn’t play much of it yet but I do remember some fun ideas being lost during the development. I also remember not vibing much with the new lore & introduction but that could possibly change whenever I take some time to finally experience the game.
I guess I could ask since you’ve mentioned Frackin’ Universe. I’ve seen some mods trying to bring various parts of the old features back, do you know if any of them managed a decent mix of old and new vision of the project?
FU was the only mod I played with, and it worked as early as 2018 I think. It was a huge overhaul on massive features and build paths. I suggest a look if you enjoy the vanilla game.
I think the final door being open is because you opened it on an earlier playthrough, since characters share the same universe (unless you delete the universe save file)
I just played through the first game earlier this year with a friend of mine. It’s fun but dated in a lot of ways, so it will be cool to play a modernized version of that, especially when it comes to designing for controllers from the outset. The ability mod system looks really cool and reminds me of that game Superfuse that isn’t going over well right now in early access.
I don't care for gamepads, but I agree on the dated part. Original TQ feels very sluggish, slow paced and limited in its movement nowadays. Kinda why I also couldn't get into the newer addons since their return. I wonder if TQ2 even addresses this in a meaningful way. The build variety I hope will be about as good, if not better, than what TQ had to offer - which was definitely one of its strong suits. I'm glad they're back though, and that they have the rights to their title back as well. TQ and probably Hellgate were probably the hack'n slay games I played most aside from the Diablo franchise, which now can go fuck itself.
I do like the graphics though. Gives a painted feel without looking cartoonish.
Got any wise tips on how to enjoy the game, without giving anything away? I am at home in these sandboxes, but wouldn’t want to miss out on something fun.
Rush to endgame armor and weapons and then mess around with the tenant mechanics. It’s much easier to decorate homes once you unlock a certain workbench.
There is also a lot to see in this game. From space station trading, to building your own, or becoming a bounty hunter
I hope they’re also looking at providing Steam Deck support for the original game too, otherwise there are going to be a lot of disappointed potential players looking to try/revisit the original. Like me:/
Never did manage to finish it, stuck on the last boss. Pile of shame.
The controller support seems good, but this style of platform shooter is pretty rough in general with the swivel aim. I think you could skip this one if you are a controller user (I love them too).
I think I’m one of the very few people that actually like this game. I bought it when it came out and have played it a few times. This is all very valid criticism of it though.
