UrLogicFails, do gaming w First Look at Switch 2

As disappointed as I am with the name Switch 2 being so plain and ordinary versus their previous sequel consoles (Super NES, Gameboy Advance, Wii U); with the console being so similar to the Switch (1), I think they’d have another Wii U situation on their hands if they did have a more clever name.

If someone told me this was a mid-cycle refresh, I’d probably believe them; but maybe the official launch reveals will change my mind…

wesley,

It makes sense that they’re playing it safe this time around. They’ve already had successors to well selling consoles due to gimmicks (*ahem Wii U). The Switch is already a well selling console so it seems like they’re just making the same thing but with better performance and some usability improvements.

DdCno1,

Nintendo overestimated the intelligence of their customers with the Wii U. They won’t make that mistake ever again.

Not that they are alone in this. There’s a reason why the Xbox 360 was called the Xbox 360 and not the Xbox 2. Microsoft didn’t want the second Xbox console to appear a generation older by name than the upcoming Playstation 3. Nintendo at least don’t have that problem, because the Switch 2 is in a market of its own and won’t be compared to the Playstation 5 by the vast majority of those interested in buying it.

I assume the purpose of the mouse function is to revive Mario Paint and Gnat Attack. What other use could it have?!

DdCno1,

Remote control tech support, of course. Allows primary schoolers to gain some practical job experience and contribute to the family income.

Damn that’s a game I haven’t thought of in a long time. And I forgot that the SNES had a mouse! at all I even remember that hard plastic mouse pad it came with.

theangriestbird,

Mario Maker? A lot of folks thought the Switch was a step down from the Wii U for MM.

When they show MK8 on a third console

https://beehaw.org/pictrs/image/95326ba6-d257-4251-9ef2-d216e210428b.webp

According to the website it can play switch 1 and 2 games and they’re doing a direct on April 2

algorithmae,

That didn’t look like mk8 though? The character style looked different, Mario looked more like Wonder than Odyssey. His cart was proportioned taller and skinnier than mk8 carts. The race track isn’t one seen in mk8 either

GammaGames,

Ah I was going off other replies I’d seen, I’d love to be wrong! I’ve been playing 8 since I was a freshman in college

theangriestbird,

it was definitely a new Mario Kart. DK’s design was hella different.

apotheotic,

Just want you to know I had a genuine cry-laugh at your image macro

GammaGames,

Haha thanks, I saw it in relation to the recent DK rerelease and wanted to use it (even if I did a little misinformation oopsie)

Enjoyed the first one. The lack of a map was agonizing though. Kept getting lost in the world. I believe you only unlock it after credits roll.

tiramichu, (edited )

I got lost a few times too, but I think they did a good job of providing mitigation for that with specific large landmarks you can see at least one of from anywhere, like the big tree, the mountain, the windmill.

I understand what the devs were trying to do by not having a map. When a map is there, especially an always-on minimap, I basically spend my whole time with my eyes glued to that tiny corner of the screen rather than actually looking at the world. So I can respect the decision to try and do without any map.

jacksilver,

Yeah I liked the free form exploration, felt more like a kid on an adventure.

I my opinion this game did open world design better than most games out there. I personally put it above BOTW, but that’s probably a controversial opinion.

Really excited to hear they’re making a sequel.

tiramichu,

The nice thing about Gator Game was that movement felt so good and fluid. It really is just a game about jumping and climing and bouncing around like a hyper kid.

Given the game doesn’t have ‘combat’ they really really needed to get traversal right because that’s the main draw, and they succeeded in that.

thingsiplay, do gaming w Games That Don't Push The Limits of the NES (For Interesting Reasons)

I watched this video yesterday too and it inspired me to write an article (not the longest article, its mainly to provide download links for those NES games): Nintendo Family BASIC Type-in Programs Collection (homebrew roms for NES)

The video itself is as you say, surprisingly interesting. But to be honest, I expected that. This channel has often interesting content like this. BTW Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Kirby and game designer of Smash Bros., had posted a video about this system too. Its very interesting watch as well: Family BASIC [Programming & Tech] by Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games

Retail sucks compared to classic. The art and level design are fantastic in retail though.

yokonzo,

I think when he said he was working, it may have been classic era (Dont quote me on that)

Codilingus,

Retail has become a very tiring roller coaster. Season by season things shift wildly from mega fun, to dog shit. And it makes no sense. The WoW team has to have all the metrics on what people like and don’t like, yet they’ll go double down and try something that was universally hated just 1-2 years ago. The biggest is when they cater to casual players, everyone loves it. So 1-2 seasons later they cater to the hardcore and everyone leaves and the game sucks.

This was brutal to watch in an already grim reality of 2025, but an important one. This is not just a remote, 3rd world problem (as if that was an excuse) - this is how our AAA games are made.

DoucheBagMcSwag, do gaming w The Lost Art of Fancy PC Game Installers

listening to Sony Vegas Keygen Unreal Superhero 3

Hmm? Did you say something?

brsrklf, do gaming w The Lost Art of Fancy PC Game Installers

Can’t watch now so not sure what’s in the video, but Lands of Lore 2 was quite fancy.

Had a parchment scroll-like UI with animated burning transitions, did creepy chants at you to test stereo sound.

Funny thing, it tested your CD-ROM drive speed too (it used to matter). Of course on a modern PC, you’d have the whole game on your (much faster) hard drive and simulate an optical drive with DOSBox or something. The installer runs its test and literally says : “Wow, your drive is fast!”

DdCno1,

That’s neat, quite different from old installers not recognizing newer hardware properly (who can blame the devs after several decades?) and instead stating that the game would not work. There was a German gaming magazine (Computer Bild Spiele) that always put a system check in front of game installers (even software installers) on their discs that would compare your system to the title’s minimum specs, using a simple stoplight (green=far exceeds requirements, yellow=just meets them, red=below minimum specs). It’s kind of similar to modern online services like “Can You Run It”.

I tried to install a very old game from one of these discs recently and it didn’t quite know what to make of the hardware. IIRC, my 32 GB of RAM was more than the developers of this check anticipated and it reported that I didn’t have enough RAM (the game needed 32 MB).

troyunrau,
@troyunrau@lemmy.ca avatar

A 32 but integer can store a number up to four billion. If measuring RAM size in integer bytes, 32GB would be 0 bytes, because that integer would wrap around four times.

Assuming windows, if you right click on the executable, you may be able to choose to run it in a compatibility mode of some sort (like XP mode or something) in which case it should report smaller memory to the game, probably.

DdCno1,

Good analysis, but I checked again and must have either misremembered or different versions of the same test were different in this regard: Upon running one of these again (this one is from 2002), it reported 32 GB of RAM as 2 GB of RAM and gave the system the green light. Notice how it also reported a fabulously high speed for the (virtual) CD-ROM drive:

https://beehaw.org/pictrs/image/7188b201-6fa7-42b3-955c-8d3a05dca932.webp

You’re right though that running it in XP SP2 compatibility mode results in the check recognizing much less RAM:

https://beehaw.org/pictrs/image/aa5b794a-dbb4-438f-aa55-84a641cb0064.webp

I never thought that this compatibility mode would limit the amount of memory that is available to an application. In fact, this is the case with all other working compatibility modes as well (Vista, 7, 8 - 95 and 98/ME don’t work with this application).
