Snow Crash anyone?

getBoolean, do gaming w Hackers are infecting Call of Duty players with a self-spreading malware | TechCrunch

is this the one that had the malware patched in the fan servers they shutdown?

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

I don't think Modern Warfare 2 ever had fan servers. It's the one that infamously had a "boycott" over the lack of dedicated servers (which is different than private servers) because it was all peer to peer multiplayer.

PrinzKasper,
@PrinzKasper@kbin.social avatar

MW2 had many iterations of fan servers. It started with alterIWnet, and ended with IW4X, which was recently shut down by Activision with a cease and desist. Fan modded versions of the game with dedicated servers and a server browser, with known security vulnerabilities like this one already patched out. Thanks to Activision, there's now no way to safely play this game anymore.

Oh, that's cool. Cool that the alternate networks ever existed, I mean. Not cool that they got shut down, but this is from the same people who shut down vanilla WoW to sell it back to you again.

WowMyNameIsUnique,

Seems like it, yep. RIP IW4X. I didn’t even know it existed!

I guess it shows how aware kids are these days and how intune with world news they are. As adults on the internet it’s normal for us to read and participate in discussions for these topics but I can’t imagine learning about this as a child.

The activism I see in the younger generations is one of the few drivers that gives me hope we will move towards a better future.

nonailsleft,

I see this kind of internet activism by children who are way too young to understand such a complex conflict as a sign for the worse… Rest assured they’re just being told what to think about it by their parents at that age

dumdum666, do gaming w Kids on Roblox are hosting protests for Palestine

As Long as there are no Hamas flags shown, the massacre on 7th October is not cheered for and they are not calling for the destruction of Israel: let them show their support for Palestinians

aniki,

As long as they protest in a way that is acceptable to me.

Magnus,

As long as they aren’t flying terrorist flags it’s acceptable to me

aniki,

Terrorist or freedom fighter. It’s a long read but if you use a finger and sound out the big words you might learn a thing or two about how the world isn’t so fucking black and white.

nonailsleft,

I’m sure these kids on Roblox are taking every nuance into account

aniki,

I’m sure you definitely can rationalize for every single human on earth, you champion you. What a burden to carry.

Sorry, it looks like you are heavily implying that the Hamas terrorist attacked that killed over 1400 Israelis in their own homes and at festivals is acceptable and it’s only a matter of perception?

Your opinion allows for absolutely zero nuance. Someone capable of empathy would see that the intentional murder of innocent civilians on EITHER SIDE of this conflict is a tragedy and morally wrong. I’m sorry that is all lost on you.

echodot,

Apparently it is because if you say it bad you lose your job which is insane. Land of the free my backside

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

If one of my employees cheered on an attack on civilians with huge casualties they would be gone as well. From either side. What the fuck is wrong with you people?

Y’all want the freedom to cheer on and encourage civilian deaths but don’t want anyone else free to call you out for it.

echodot,

No we’re just criticising the fact that one side is apparently angels even though they’re murdering civilians and the other side are terrible even though they’re doing the same murdering of civilians.

irmoz, (edited )

That’s a lot of hoops to jump through for your specific approval. I’m sure they’ll work hard to impress you.

unfortunately most of this thread is off the rails and just not salvageable whatsoever in terms of discussion, so this is going to be a lock and remove. maybe we can try this thread again down the road but for now, no.

themeatbridge, do astronomy w Astrobotic's Peregrine lander suffers propulsion issue, making moon landing unlikely

You mean farming out scientific discovery to the lowest bidder doesn’t yield the best results?

wahming,

Were they the lowest bidder? The article doesn’t mention anything about that.

Also, going with the lowest bidder gave us spacex, which turned out pretty well. Fuck Boeing

verity_kindle,

Indeed, this is the way. Fuccckk thaaatt Boeiiiinggg ::::meditation mantra::::::

nooneescapesthelaw,

Farming out to the lowest bidder works well when the guidelines are strict and the client (gvmnt) does good QA.

Lots of stuff was farmed out in the apollo mission and it was still ok. Strict QA was noted as a very important factor in why that mission was a success.

You can read the case study by NASA about this, and you’ll see that they have 1 article just about QA and how they did testing, and another one about testing and deadlines

verity_kindle, do astronomy w Astrobotic's Peregrine lander suffers propulsion issue, making moon landing unlikely

That’s frustrating. Anyways, SpaceX! Turnaround record of 3 hours! Something fails, learn from it and launch another one. The ULA invests so much money and time, it makes every mechanical or propulsion failure seem catastrophic.

Valmond,

It might be cheaper but it’s not like its free you know.

@inkican I’m curious how fast you can ‘walk’ on this treadmill. Looks like tiny steps, not sure how well that will translate into most games.

FenrirIII, do games w Apple terminates Epic Games developer account calling it a 'threat' to the iOS ecosystem

Seems anticompetitive

RogueBanana,

“Seems” really isn’t necessary. It’s apple.

Tramort,

“threat” is just competition, right?

Fine 'em, EU!

filister,

The question is when the US government is going to take any measures against them.

Apple is not that strong in the EU but I think in the US it controls more than 50% of the market and your authorities are simply closing their eyes in front of their anti competitive practices.

jkrtn,

Our anti-competitive practitioners are buying judges as well as new laws.

Buddahriffic,

Well, there was recently a judgement on both Apple and Google anticompetitive practices having to do with app stores. Somehow apple won theirs, despite their apps being completely locked to their store while Google lost theirs despite always having supported side loading apps and other app stores already existing. The US legal system is a joke.

echo64, do games w Apple terminates Epic Games developer account calling it a 'threat' to the iOS ecosystem

Apple just isn’t good at playing this “control an entire industry” game as its contemporaries like Microsoft.

It’s “embrace, extend, extinguish”. But apples play seems to be more like the five stages of grief.

  • denial, the eu won’t ever force us to do a thing, we’re Apple! They wouldn’t.
  • anger, <- we are here
  • barginning
  • depression
  • acceptance.
PlasticExistence,

They’ll never reach acceptance. Maybe court-ordered compliance, but never true acceptance.

dan1101,

The court rulings better cover every way Apple could avoid compliance.

RGB3x3,

Maybe a lawyer could tear this apart and find loopholes, but the law should be so simple as to say:

“A company providing mobile computing services and products, being hardware, software, or networking, shall allow under all circumstances and without restriction, the installation and usage of applications from all sources.”

But of course, I’m not a Lawyer, so there’s probably a loophole to be found in that.

I don’t particularly care for Epic, but this is some gatekeeping bullshit from Apple.

bungle_in_the_jungle,

Same old…

ColeSloth,

I don’t even care. All the kids crying for an iPhone so their texts show up the “right” color don’t deserve to play fortnite. Iphone gained such a large market share that there’s very little higher end competition left amongst android phones. If the market weren’t so lopsided, maybe we’d get options beside a Samsung s line or an Asus rog. I don’t want to give up my micro sd card slot or battery access.

djsoren19, do games w Apple terminates Epic Games developer account calling it a 'threat' to the iOS ecosystem

Didn’t Epic just win an anticompetitive lawsuit against Google, off the back of losing a similar anticompetitive lawsuit against Apple?

Methinks they’ll be coming back for round 2, and this will be the provocation that will give Epic a win. Regardless of your thoughts and feelings on Epic, I think we can agree that Apple is a shitty company and they could do with an L.

superduperenigma,

Every company you mentioned in your comment is a shitty company that could do with an L.
