Have CoD MW2 on steam because it is one of the few games that I can do cross play with a friend who only plays on consoles and I'm on PC. They changed the steam launcher with CoD MW3 to some combined thing that launches, then I pick MW2 and the new launcher closes and then starts MW2 from scratch.
Yes, the launcher launches so that it can close and open MW2 like it used to.
But the best part is that CoD on PC does the thing where the game loads, tells you it has and update and requires a restart, Then when it restarts it has to update shaders. The best part is that both the stupid launcher and MW2 have separate updates and shaders. So the worst one was launcher has an update and has to load twice and complete shaders. Then MW2 starts and then requires an update, restarts and then shaders.
That's right, one time it took launching FOUR times and two sets of shaders just to start playing.
It is now uninstalled and is one of the few games on steam that I reviewed just so I could complain about this stupid design. Feels good to vent again because I had a ton of fun that made restarting twice annoying but tolerable, but always launching twice and sometimes more is just ridiculous.
You should clarify that whenever there’s an update, you update the game through Steam like normal, then when the update is complete, you load the game up only to see a pop-up that “Update requires restart” that forces you to close the game and restart it. Why does it need to start and then restart after an update? The game isn’t started when you update it, why do we have to start it after the patch just to have to immediately close it and start it again?
I would bet the main launcher's shaders that then closes to launch MW2 is doing the Warzone shaders. Before MW3 came out it would just do shaders once for both Warzone and MW2.
Better than Windows Updates. Run through the updates, restart the computer, keep doing what you do, get message “we need you to restart because we just installed some updates”.
Motherfucker, I just restarted. Tf do you need a second restart for and only telling me after I get in and launch everything??
I gave my nephew: My NES, N64, PS2, Gamecube, and Gameboy Advance, with all the games I had. He played the hell out of them! In many cases, he unlocked things I never had, and he’d always talk about them and his progress.
I’ll be honest – I miss those things a lot – but it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, seeing someone get to experience all those games for the first time, just like I had.
Hundreds is an exaggeration, I’ll admit lol. But I’ve probably got around 20 or so from retroid, anbernic, and miyoo, and each one has an SD card with pretty much every retro game on it up through PS1 :)
It’s why I went back to PC gaming. As an aging man with children, I am no longer interested in having a bleeding edge gaming machine so I went to consoles for a while. It was too painful keeping a subscription on something I don’t often play so I didn’t bother with a PS5 and got a steamdeck instead.
There’s a lot of gamers in this thread too young to remember how overloaded and miserable the free console game servers were.
Microsoft was like “chuck us like ~$5 per month and we will put up enough servers so the games are actually playable”. At the time, it was the best deal available for console gaming.
Honestly an argument could be made it was the most economical way to play online, in general, at the time. The console cost was subsidized, and the online servers were arguably at-cost, and you really only needed to buy one copy of Halo to join the fun.
Alternately, videogames now: I have a farm and it's the nicest farm of them all, and all the chickens have names and are demonstrably happy. Also I moonlight as an interior decorator for all my friends with whom I have deep personal relationships.
Just saying, we may be playing different types of games here.
Castle Wolfenstein was such a fun game! Not just one of the first stealth games, but one of the first procedurally generated games too! Most people think that it was Elite. Haven’t played or thought about it in a few years… Maybe I’ll fire it up tonight.
