EncryptKeeper, do games w Bethesda Game Studios developers form 'wall to wall' union that includes artists, designers, and programmers

I wonder where a union draws its power from in an industry where there are so many people desperate for work right now.

Trade unions make sense because there’s such a shortage of skilled workers in total, much less scabs. How does a union for such a well known legacy game developer sustain itself in an environment where I bet scabs would be in abundance?

ICastFist,
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

Maybe for Bethesda specifically, there’s also a shortage of skilled work? I mean, they often hire modders and Creation Engine STILL uses flash (Starfield’s menus are .swf files),

Skullgrid,

Creation Engine STILL uses flash (Starfield’s menus are .swf files),

YOOOOOO WHAT THE FUUUUCK.

Seriously, how hard is it to change the UI to use JS?? They really go through old ass Adobe documentation whenever they make a new menu with AS3???

I seriously hope it’s all AS and compiled to SWF, if they’re running some fucked version of Adobe Flash to make the swfs by hand, 💀

BaroqueInMind,

Seriously, how hard is it to change the UI to use JS??

JavaScript can do animations without wanting to commit suicide?

ICastFist,
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

With some jquery, yes. Without it, suicide feels like a release

ICastFist,
@ICastFist@programming.dev avatar

I don’t know about the details, but I found that out while browsing the menu mods, as the Undelayed Menus, which removes the pointless delay in opening and closing of menus, comes with a bunch of .swf and that was when I thought to myself “You have to be fucking kidding”

Checking any other menu mod, it’ll be .swf files.

Crozekiel,

Yea, they probably have that one guy still there from the days creation engine was made that is required to be on staff for any future games to fix whatever archaic code they break. Get him on board with the union and Bethesda is probably held by the short hairs to do whatever they say.

With more than 450 employees, you can’t really replace all that on the fly.

Zehzin, do games w I played Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector and talked to its creator about quests that 'don't give you the dragon money'
@Zehzin@lemmy.world avatar

I picked up the first one like a year back and ended up playing it through in two long sessions.

I relate to the Mass Effect 2 comments. One of my absolute favorite RPGs that fails at basic RPG things.

Bademantel,

I got the first game a month ago and binged it in three sessions. It was a fantastic experience, and I rate the game highly. However, I wish the decisions you made had a more significant impact on the story. I understand that maintaining a great narrative can make this challenging, but I hope part 2 can expand on that aspect. From what I’ve heard, it sounds like it might offer more flexibility in choices. Regardless, I’ll probably enjoy it either way.

yokonzo, do gaming w Indie dev baffled after acquaintance clones his game, puts it on Steam, and acts like it's no big deal: 'Happens every day homie'

Dude just destroyed his indie rep in one fell move. Regardless of what you feel of the situation, noone wants to “talk shop” with the guy known for stealing ideas

warmaster, do gaming w GOG is going to start deleting oversized cloud saves at the end of August

What a shitshow.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

It’s crazy there are apologists for this.

“Oh well obviously save files shouldn’t be that big” – are you kidding me? This is the whole point of providing a storefront service.

SorteKanin, do games w God of War Ragnarök will require a PSN account to play on PC
@SorteKanin@feddit.dk avatar

Let me tell you what to do when the game drops on steam:

  1. Buy it at full price as soon as it releases.
  2. Press play, get to the PSN login screen or whatever it is.
  3. Close it.
  4. Immediately post a negative review saying it requires a PSN account.
  5. Request a refund from Steam, you’ll basically get it automatically as you played less than 2 hours.
  6. Profit! Watch Sony squirm with those reviews.

enlighten us plebs with your wisdom and tell us which conclusion should be drawn then

eskimofry,

That selling to the next buyer who throws money at you obviously leads to risks of getting shutdown. People don’t want or care about long term sustainability and cry when business daddy decides that record profits this year don’t match up with imaginary made up profit growth and hence declare this as a failure.

Edit: “Making good, profitable games ‘will no longer keep you safe’” But only if you sold your soul for a bunch of retirement money from Bethesda or whoever else. If you are so keen on that sweet retirement exit then your studio was doomed the moment somebody offered the founders to a buyout. I am baffled at how people are missing this obvious conclusion.

Pretend I’m 8 and explain the right conclusion to me, please. I don’t know what it is.

JVT038, do gaming w Fallout 4's most popular mods are now ones that remove Bethesda's disastrous 'next gen' update
@JVT038@feddit.nl avatar

I’m on PC and I haven’t noticed anything changed. Literally. I don’t notice any bugs nor have I noticed a sudden improvement of my graphics. It seems to me that the 15gb that Steam downloaded, was just full of 0’s and don’t do anything.

Edit: Nevermind, apparently the new quests and items are part of the update, so in that case I have definitely noticed something lol.

changingfmh,

The primary issue on PC is that it broken F4SE, breaking a large number of mods and delaying Fallout London, a mod they poached developers from.

That, and loading times in some areas are suddenly a minute long.

Fredy1422,

yep, and im still waiting for the dev to update it (tediously painful he says.)

VindictiveJudge,
@VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world avatar

Every update breaks F4SE. Same with SKSE. Just wait a few days and it’ll be fine.

DudeDudenson, do gaming w I tried two demos of machine learning AI NPCs, and they didn't convince me AI will lead to anything that immersive sims like Deus Ex haven't already done better

I’d like to think it’s gonna be used for what it should be. What’s most likely is that it’ll be used to reduce both original VO and Writing

Be prepared for asset flip dialogue

Kaiyoto, do games w Star Wars Outlaws' $110 and $130 editions prompt a collective sigh from potential players tired of season passes and ill-advised early access periods

How about fixing cloud saves between PC and Steam Deck?

Carighan,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

That’s probably on Steam, not Nightdive? After all it’s just uploading some files and downloading them again, something the steam client is supposed to do for you.

anyhow2503,

Cloud saves work fine between Linux PCs, but the devs seem to have misconfigured the save path for Steam cloud saves integration on Windows. That’s why it doesn’t work. That’s on the devs, not the Steam client. Apparently they were working on a fix since about half a year ago, maybe they finally released that fix now?

vikingtons,
@vikingtons@lemmy.world avatar

I think there’s mention of it in the release notes for 1.2?

EveningPancakes,

Nope, it’s a bug with how Nightdive coded the save path. Since they made a native Linux version of the game, Steam is using that as opposed to doing Proton compatibility. So that means the save paths in the Linux version and the Windows version aren’t the same, hence not syncing properly.

TurboHarbinger,

How about fixing the achievements too.
