There should be a happy medium. I haven’t played Elite Dangerous in a year because I’m 50 jumps away from where I need to go, which means like 3 hours of nothing but travel. But the realism is out of this world. This Starfield thing of never needing to fly is too far in the other direction. I think a happy medium would be a system like Elite Dangerous, but if you need to travel more than a couple of systems over, have a long distance jump gate or something like that, and maybe autopilot. Eve online has jump gates and autopilot, but it can still take hours to cross the universe. It’s more entertaining to have a quick travel option for those scenarios. Eve has wormhole systems that will let you cross the entire universe in a few jumps, but finding those connections will take longer than just flying directly, unless you’re in a huge wormhole corporation that uses 3rd party tools to map all of the wormhole connections to known space.
I’m not sure. I guess because they go hard in the simulation aspect of the game. Although if we’re being realistic, it’s unrealistic that you’d have an interstellar space ship without an autopilot. I read that there are mods to enable autopilot, but I also read they can get your account banned, so I stopped looking into them.
I was stoked to finally get a jet, and then really disappointed to learn that I couldn’t afford to fly it. It’s supposed to be a game, not a reflection of my real life inability to pay for jet fuel

They had little hand held digital device for this back in the late 90’s, like a tomagatchi. It was super cool. My wife found one at the thrift store a few months ago and we played with it for a few days. It was able to guess correctly about 95% of the time.
And you can’t reject an update. They won’t even let you use your headset if there’s an update available. I haven’t used mine in months because every time I try to use it the battery is dead, then once I get it charged it needs an update, and by the time that’s done I don’t have any time left.
They’re not just entry level headsets. You can link them to a powerful gaming computer through Steam Link and then they’re the equivalent of a $1200 headset from Valve or HTC.
If your computer has USB-C 3.2 v2 then you can play for infinite time over the charge cable. I have a couple on my MOBO and as soon as I switched to those ports I never had charging issues. I think that resolves the video compression issue too. I’m not certain about the video issue but the bandwidth of 3.2 v2 is double what the display port is. I’ve never had any issues anyway. I’m sure there are other benefits to the pricier headsets too, like not having to deal with Facebook, and possibly better interfaces and stuff, but for the money the Quest v2 is pretty awesome.
The Quest 2 has pretty much eliminated the screen door. I’ve never had any issues at 90/90, but sensitive people might. The higher the better really. I hate saying it, because I despise Facebook, but the headset is actually really good, especially if you use it through Steam Link. Comparable headsets are 2-3x as much money.
It uses inside-out tracking, but I haven’t had any issues with it. If you move your hand out of view, it knows that you did so and will just make it disappear and reappear when it moves back into view.
I had the original HTC Vive before my wife gave me the Oculus Quest 2 for Christmas last year. The Quest 2 is good enough that I gave the Vive to my son and just kept the Quest 2. The resolution is much clearer on the Quest, and the tracking is very good too.
One of the very cool things about the Quest 2 is that it’s a stand-alone device, so for native games you can play it in your kitchen, or backyard, or anywhere with a lot of room. There are several titles that have been ported to the Oculus store for the Quest, and they’re on-par with their Steam equivalents.
Of course the performance won’t be as good as a full-blown gaming computer, so I usually play through the Steam Link, using a 35 foot USB-C cable. Another benefit to the cable is that it charges the headset while you’re playing, so you aren’t limited to 2 hour sessions. I’ve probably played 100 hours in Elite Dangerous using the Steam Link and it’s beautiful, smooth, and near flawless. My WiFi router is pretty far from my game room, so I haven’t had much luck with the WiFi Steam Link, but some people seem to have had success with it based on what I’ve read on a bunch of Reddit posts.
When I got the Quest 2 you could still use your Oculus account to log in, but now they require that you merge it with your Facebook account, which is really annoying. That’s the only thing I dislike about the Quest, that you need a Facebook account. But you can turn off sync, and it doesn’t post to Facebook, or share your gaming history, or anything like that. I haven’t launched or even looked at the metaverse, because it doesn’t interest me at all, and it’s decoupled enough that it’s pretty much a non-issue once you get over the fact that a Facebook account is required. You’d have to spend another $500-$1000 for an equivalent device that doesn’t require Facebook.
That’s true, but when it drops below 90/90 you’re a lot more likely to experience motion sickness from something as simple as looking around. With the higher frame rates, the motion is perceived more naturally by the brain, and you’re a lot less likely to become nauseous. For the games more intense movement, where your perceived movement is disconnected from your actual movement, you can get used to it eventually, as long as your system is pushing enough information to your eyes. I have a top of the line gaming computer and I could only play very short sessions of Elite Dangerous when I started, since the perception is that you’re in a spaceship that’s flipping and spinning all around. After several short sessions, my brain started adapting until I could play for hours on end.
I just started playing COD Black Ops Cold War because I got it through my PlayStation Plus subscription and wanted to try it out. I’ve previously played some others like Modern Warfare (1 and 2) and WWII. While it always felt a bit over the top and propaganda-ish, I really liked it for the blockbuster feeling and just turning...
The first CoD definitely showed the horrors of war. By the “Russian Bit” I suppose you mean the part where a Russian soldier tries to retreat and is shot by his commanding officer. Or maybe you mean where you have to wait for the soldier in front of you to die so you can pick up a gun and boots. But every CoD since that game has been more of a game and less of a history lesson.

Has anyone here ever walked up to their partner and just blurted out “can I tell you something? Waking up with you every day is like a dream come true” completely out of the blue?
Yes actually, and quite often. I want my wife to know how much she means to me and how glad I am to share our lives together.
Absolutely! I’m completely blessed, and she feels the same way. I’ve read before that the best relationships are those where each person thinks they got the better end of the deal, and I would say that’s true for us.
Starfield has been out for long enough now that anyone interested in playing it likely already has.
Not even close, especially not in the year that also brought us Baldur’s Gate and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. How much free time does this writer think everyone has?
They probably want it to fail so that they have fewer users on their servers that already paid. I’m sure their attitude is “pay us again if you want to keep playing”.

I guess this is tangentially related. RDR2 had the full ending for Author and then kept going. I didn’t care what happened beyond that so I never finished the epilogue.

CS is what got me to finally open a steam account too. I can’t remember if it was the only way to play, or if it was a considerably better way to play. Either way, everyone playing CS was on Steam so I finally opened an account.
