Another vote for Hollow Knight.

Also Super Metroid, Castlevania SOTN and Aria of Sorrow, Dark Souls, and La Mulana 1 & 2

Good picks, but I don’t think Dark Souls qualifies as a metroidvania. Metroidvanias gate off parts of the map based on what abilities the player has/doesn’t have, whereas Dark Souls blocks off parts of the map simply because you’re missing a key. Also, Dark Souls doesn’t really have ability power-ups with the exception of acquiring the Lordvessel.

Another vote for Hollow Knight. Amazing game.

Maestro,

It's a beautiful game, but I really, really hate how you have to backtrack and kill your ghost after every death.

Did they cancel it? I was thinking a few months ago about how I swore I could have remembered someone making a Fallout 4 mod that adds Appalachia but I couldn’t remember for sure

I haven’t seen any progress. I found a “beta play test” video on YT that looked legit, but had no data on the mod.

I like the disgaea series not only because of the deep systems involved, but also just because gameplay is so snappy. So many SRPGs are slow as molasses in terms of interface. I also really enjoyed Unicorn Overlord recently.

Ha! I heard of this one, but haven’t been able to try it yet. As a huge fan of old school RE games, it piqued my interest. Thank you for reminding me of it. I shall pick it up as soon as I have some free time.

I’ll also mention another, even lesser known title: Kabus 22. It’s an old Turkish videogame that’s clearly inspired by classic RE titles. Not very good, but I have a soft spot for games that were developed with more love than knowledge on game design. Also the developer is a really nice dude who re-released the game for free as a thank you to the fans who reached out to him, and that’s such a sick move that I can’t help but have a lot of respect for him.

There’s a good retrospective in YT about the game here, if anyone’s curious.

I’m back on my first playthrough of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided after a two-month break for Blue Prince, Clair Obscur and F.E.A.R… It’s a great game, but I think I did it a disservice by taking the long break, I can feel I’m so much less invested now than I was when I began playing it.

It’s very unfortunate that the series ended on a cliffhanger, what they have here is really good and in many ways an upgrade on Human Revolution. A third game from the studio would have been a true masterpiece, I think.

I don’t mean that other people have changed your opinion, but quite the opposite: a game that you think is good and you didn’t know that other people hated it.

duchess,

You might be the first human to actually do that.

Darkenfolk,

It’s more likely that you are just not aware of the influence others have on you. Which is fine, a lot of that stuff is subconscious.

Krudler,

So you are both a liar and semi-literate.

Most games that dont scale into 100+ hours. I never reach that point anyway.

Greedfall

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

Even though Greedfall is hardly a great game I think it has too much charm to really fit here. I found it too memorable to really be a “mediocre slop” contender.

Geth,

The developer, Spiders, seem to be experts at creating mediocre games with very small budgets, and again they didn’t quite have the money to take it all the way with greedfall, but they did make more than a mediocre game in my opinion. For me it was memorable enough unlike others mentioned in this thread.

burgerpocalyse, do games w A game you "didn't know it was bad 'til people told you so"?

what console version of Sonic unleashed did you play? i have heard that the wii version is probably the best because, despite the motion control gooberness, it cuts out maybe tons of annoying open world busywork and overly long levels due to the Wii not having enough storage space or whatever

NONE_dc,
@NONE_dc@lemmy.world avatar

The PS2 version, which i think is kinda the same as the Wii version. It was my first PS2 game ever too.

I made a post not all that long ago about Lords of the Fallen after discovering it myself, only to find that nobody else seemed to like it as much as I did (which, fair; it’s probably why I hadn’t heard of it until recently).

It’s not as good as a Fromsoft game, or Lies of P, but, to me anyway, it’s like the 2nd best soulslike that isn’t a Fromsoft game. The major disappointments are minimal enemy variety, and the story is just kinda shit. The highlights are the combat and build variety, and unique aspects like tying item descriptions to your actual skills so you can’t read some descriptions unless you invest in “knowledge” of it. It just sucks that you don’t really get much from it because, again, the story is kinda shit.

Also it’s the only non Fromsoft soulslike I’ve played that has PvP. I got into Dark Souls and the rest because of the invasion system more than anything else, so LOTF having that was a big plus for me.

Diablo 4. I mean, I know it is easy, but I felt the version of Halo I played was way easy and it has a good reputation.

Rai,

I’m a die hard Diablo 1-2 fan (thousands of hours in D2) and I liked D3 well enough but maybe put in 250 hours… skipped D4 entirely and I have zero regrets hahaha

I wouldn’t day D4 is a good game but I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it. I stopped playing right after VoH came out, and the direction that expansion was taking the game didn’t interest me, but it was a fun time overall. Not a very deep game though and endgame was basically non-existent since everything falls over at that point.
