Megaman_EXE, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of September 29th

I tried darkwood this weekend, and it’s left me torn. I really enjoy certain aspects about it, but I feel like the pacing is weird.

I finished Still wakes the deep the other day and I thought it was ok. It was an interesting environment to explore, but I didn’t think it was all too scary.

I’m off to find a different horror game to play now.

What’s up with Darkwood’s popularity recently? I know Pyrocynical made a video about a week ago, but I started it before that, because of a friend recommended it to me like a month ago. And I think I saw it mentioned elsewhere somehere inbetween too.

I generally don’t play horror games, so Darkwood scares me enough that I only play for maybe half an hour during daytime. Might take a month to get through.

Megaman_EXE,

My guess is that people are getting into the Halloween Spooky vibes already! But otherwise, I don’t know. Darkwood was free on Xbox games with gold a long time ago, and I snagged it then, but I just never got around to it until now

GammaGames,

LOOOOVED darkwood! It took me a bit to get a feeling for the game, but after I got my daily rhythm I found the gameplay satisfying, tense, and occasionally scary.

Got back into Yooka Laylee after a fairly long hiatus. Still on the first 2 levels because of the high amount of exploration and things to do, so I’m not far at all, but definitely having fun.

Echo Point Nova (Steam)

(Made by the same folks behind Severed Steel) A short and sweet, low-fi yet beautiful co-op (and optionally PVP) movement shooter with extremely satisfying projectile mechanics, destructible environments and a gorgeous soundtrack by Floating Door. Zip through at ridiculous speeds across a series of mysterious floating islands with your hoverboard and grapple beam. Inch closer to god-like power as you progress.

Definitely not for everybody but there’s a demo (which can also be played in co-op) available on the store page.

Nine Sols

A fantastic metroidvania that’s almost flawless. It has great combat, a great story, great soundtrack, and beautiful art. Highly recommended to anyone into these games.

SteamWorld Heist II (Steam, PS4/5, Xbox One/Series, Switch)

Like its predecessor, it’s basically “2D XCOM with skill shots instead of randomness”. Highly recommended, perfect for gaming on the go with a Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch.

We just need to all go elderly collectively and call every gaming hardware and software a Nintendo

E seems kinda empty, so I’ll chip in with Exit/Enter The Gungeon

This was the DLC they made for the rerelease right? How is it? I had never played any of the DLC back in the day, but I bought the rerelease on steam

samus12345,
@samus12345@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve been stuck on the DLC for a long time now, not because of difficulty, but because I just don’t find it very interesting. Hoping to force my way through it one of these days.

callouscomic,

It honestly is a large DLC that overstays its welcome. I know a lot of people think this game is kind of meh to begin with, but if someone enjoyed the original game and story, I think they’ll like the DLC because it has some more closure on the story and it does introduce some neat new gameplay mechanics.

The issue is you gotta really stick with it. It starts out fun to explore a new area, and then eventually you reach this point where it becomes a bit frustrating, but as you get through it, some stuff unlocks and it becomes really cool gameplay-wise. Also there’s a middle semi-grindy part where it felt like the difficulty got unfair, but after some unlocks involved in the grindy pary it got fun again and really became something else.

I think it could have been done a bit better, but overall as a fan of the original game, I enjoyed myself. You just unfortunately gotta push through to the end to get past this kind of middle part that drags.

There’s lots of fun and ridiculous characters too. I think they did a great job having it really feel like it fits the goofy theme of the game world even though it wasn’t the original team.

intensely_human, do games w Ubisofts stock tanked this morning ahead of the markets opening

I thought from this graph that the stock had tanked to pennies.

It lost about 20% of its value, looks like

Andonyx,

FWIW, a 20% drop is borderline catastrophic for a major company. The squeeze it puts on their supply chain, ability to make payroll, and interest rates on borrowing going up, it could be enough to create a death spiral. I think ubisoft is probably managed well enough to deal with this, but this is definitely a serious situation for them.

Look at the entire history.

In 2018 their stock price was about 24, now it’s 2.

Sounds positive. Not quite a BotW/TotK-banger, but I didn’t expect such a quirky concept to score big on the first outing. Only spotted one truly critical review in there, and even that was more “It’s a neat idea, but doesn’t truly pan out all that well”.

Definitely getting this. Exciting!

smokebuddy, do games w I think Sims is a dead franchise now

I watched the LGR Video then saw this and it looks bleak. EA promised to update the NHL series into the new Frostbite engine and all we got was the same game with the same glitches plus a bunch of new ones and longer load times. Even now like 4 years later it’s not worth playing, a total mess. A real shame Life By You got cancelled I had that on my wishlist and it looked almost finished…

I still play Sims 3 with the entire pirate pack from time to time, guess the tradition will continue for now

CCMan1701A,

I stopped with the NHL updates back with NHL 99 even they were basically just roster updates over NHL 97

Lumelore, do games w I think Sims is a dead franchise now

I love the type of gameplay that the Sims (specifically building and character creation, other stuff is boring af) has but it sucks so much to play because it’s so limited unless you spend thousands on all the dlc. I am a game dev (well, I call myself that but I’ve never released anything cuz I’m too busy with finishing up college rn) and I really want to make a life sim game one day. I’ve seen plenty of indie life sims fail unfortunately, but I’m still going to try anyways. I have a few ideas I haven’t seen anyone else do. So many of these games fail that I’m not afraid to try something a bit crazy and hope it sticks.

Mango, do games w I think Sims is a dead franchise now

Why is nobody competing with them? It doesn’t seem like a hard type of game to make, and they’re doing such a terrible job that it should be easy to compete with them.

Who’s got a Sims alternative?

deus,

The fact that there aren’t many alternatives likely means that making a Sims-like game isn’t as simple as it looks. That being said, there are a bunch of life sims under developement right now (probably because EA is doing a terrible job) such as Paralives, Inzoi and Alterlife.

Mango,

Ooohhh, Inzoi and Alterlife both look really good!

Tarquinn2049,

Just a heads up, Alterlife likely never got off the ground. They mocked up a demo video with store assets 3 years ago, but were never heard from again. I still have it on my wishlist, but my hopes are not up, lol.
