Nacktmull, do games w What are y'all buying on the steam sale?
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

I considered getting TW Warhammer III … at least until I saw the scandalous prices for it’s DLCs.

UnfairUtan,

Yea…

If that’s any consolation, I bought the game before the DLCs came out, and it was more than enough to have fun with it.

CaptDust, do games w What are y'all buying on the steam sale?

Likely nothing, too much backlog from last sale still. I wish there was a deeper discount on bg3 though

Schal330, do games w Is there some sort of Indie Game Showcase?

I tend to watch Clemmy Games to see what indie games are coming up. There are a lot of duds, but then you come across a diamond in the rough. Clemmy does a great job for me, releasing videos almost every day and I would recommend giving the channel a go!

roxas2153,

Thank you! The hardest part for me was finding a consolidated source of upcoming ones, and this fits that need well.

NocturnalMorning, do games w Is there some sort of Indie Game Showcase?

I just go to itch.io usually and play new games there. Might not be what you’re looking for, but as far as indie titles go, I find a lot of weird ideas on there.

roxas2153,

By far some of the most interesting and bizarre games I have ever seen. Thanks!

skozzii, do gaming w I hate the term "Boomer Shooter"

Back in my day, we used to call them shooters…

But we had to fight uphill, both ways…

masterspace, do gaming w I hate the term "Boomer Shooter"

When games like Duke Nukem 3D or Quake were out, Boomers were what? 30 to 50 years old? I’m sure some of them played FPS games, but there is no way they were the majority.

Think about it this way, it’s not that the majority of people playing those games are boomers, but the majority of games that boomers play are those games.

Also, this has caused me to look up the formal definition of Gen X vs Boomer, and I did not realize that everyone born after 1964 is considered Gen X. In my head Gen X went from ~1975-1990, everyone before that being a boomer, so assuming other people have the same conception of boomer in their head, then the majority of people able to afford gaming PCs in the mid 90s would be boomers…

They also do just go boom and have stuff like the BFG …

ampersandrew, do gaming w I hate the term "Boomer Shooter"
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

I think they're called that because they postdate the "looter shooter" that combined Diablo-esque "action RPGs" with FPS games, like Borderlands and Destiny. "Looter" without the "shooter" is a much better name for Diablo's genre anyway, since we have far too many RPGs that are also action games and have nothing in common with Diablo.

I'm still waiting for the resurgence of the style of shooter that came just after those that inspired this wave of boomer shooter; the likes of Half-Life, Halo, 007, TimeSplitters, and so on. I don't know what subgenre will be assigned to those games when they start to come back around, but that style is also old at this point, so hopefully it doesn't also get assigned the label of "boomer shooter", because then it'll be harder for both audiences to find what they're looking for.

vasus, do games w Something about The Finals

If you want to rant about GPU prices, why randomly call out one/two specific games? Not like it doesn’t apply to any other modern release. I don’t get this post

Also I looked up some benchmarks and you can get 60FPS on medium with an RX 6600 (about 200 USD curently in the US) in both finals & helldivers. Could possibly get away with a cheaper card on Low settings

ViscloReader,

It’s a rant, kinda like a “offmychest” post if you want. And I’m “calling out” these games because they where really fun imo, and I am a bit sad knowing there is a very low chance I’ll get to experience them at peak player count.

gamermanh, do gaming w What are some good PSP games?

Weird that nobody mentioned the GTA games on PSP

Vice City Stories and Liberty City Stories are absolutely awesome GTA games somehow squeezed onto the PSP

sleepybisexual,

Downloaded vice stories, is there an order to play them

NecroMemories,

they’re just prequels really, I can’t remember anything groundbreaking. It’d /maybe/ be better to play 3 and vice city first, but it’s mostly just callbacks. Liberty city stories protag is just a quest giver. Neither super spoils the other but I might be wrong.

sleepybisexual,

K

NecroMemories,

They have a crisp cubish feel which was fun, I remember playing around with mods

Making a new comment off my other reply because I have more niche recommendations: Carnage Hearts EXA, you program robots to fight each other, actually quite in depth.

Good RPGs: Valkyrie Profile Lenneth, Legend of Mana (originally PS1)

Phantasy Star Portable 2: pretty decent PSP version of the phantasy Star online game.

Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, kind of a weird "fighting" game, very unique mechanics, but really fun, lots of fan service, and tons of really really excellent music from across the final fantasy series

SoulCalibur Broken Destiny: solid entry in the series even on portable

And Castlevania Symphony of the Night (originally PS1)

If you’re looking for bifl bag I have to give the obligatory shout out to Goruck. The GR1 has molle on the inside that you can attach a holster to and I’m sure that some of the others do as well. It’s a pack that’s meant to thrive in rough conditions and if you happen to damage it it’s covered by their scars lifetime warranty. I’ve had mine for 7 years now with no issues. The only Velcro it has on the outside is for a patch and I’m sure you can remove it if you don’t want it.

They’re called belts, junior. Back when I was a kid in the 1950’s everybody wore one. And we were happy!

Final Fantasy XV (Windows edition): What a strange experience so far. I don’t see myself as a fan of the franchise, but I’ve played many of its titles over the years, starting with the first one as a child.

The opening title mentions the game has been made for “fans and first timers”, so I expected some degree of nostalgia, despite it looking so different from its predecessors. I was served some… but in such weird ways. Let’s start with the composition of the Four Warriors of Light:

  • The brat: Noctis, emo prince of teen attitude, as well as protagonist.
  • The urban dad: Ignis, cooks elaborate meals and drives (always responsibly) the brat around.
  • The country dad: Gladio, went to the school of life, must protecc the brat.
  • The brat’s best friend that eats and sleeps at home so often he kind of becomes family: Prompto.

As Ignis was driving the warriors around in a fantasy rural North America, a desolate car centric landscape in which each road’s main destination is the next gas station, Prompto was making comments about playing video games. The car’s radio was playing FFIV’s Main Theme over and over again. Then it hit me: the nostalgia trip was not limiting itself to referencing lore from previous games, it was aiming to remind older gamers of how it was being a kid infatuated with classic RPGs. (A side note on the embarrassing haircuts the warriors are rockin’: back in the 90’s there were posters of these all over hair salons despite nobody ever getting one, but I guess this is really about modern jpop/kpop boy bands or something.)

It’s like FFXV is aiming for the worst possible kind of nostalgia: the kind that makes you glorify past experiences out of regret for the time when you were a pampered selfish kid.

Anyways I’m probably way off, but that’s my thoughts on FFXV. Oh also there’s chocobos so it’s not all bad. Thanks for reading.

Coelacanth,
@Coelacanth@feddit.nu avatar

I’ve typed up so many comments about FFXV over the years, so I guess it at least didn’t end up being forgettable. I’ve been looking for the right wording , I think. It’s the worst game I ever loved? It has no right being as enjoyable as it is considering its issues? Something like that. It has so many problems, but there is also something there underneath it all. If only they didn’t spread it out so thin.

I hope you have the Royal Edition, the DLCs really do flesh out the story a lot. They should honestly just have been integrated into the main game. I recommend pausing the main story to play Episode Gladios and Episode Prompto whenever the respective characters briefly leave the party (you’ll know when). I’d play episode Ignis after chapter 10, but be aware that it contains a possible alternative (non-canon) ending depending on your choices.

Oh also there’s chocobos so it’s not all bad.

It also has one of the best fishing minigames out of any game out there, really! It has its moments.

Nacktmull, do gaming w What are some games that too few people have played?
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

FTL - Faster Than Light

Divinity: Original Sin II

Nova Drift

Into The Breach

BluesF,

I mean I’ll second Nova Drift, great asteroids-esque roguelite… But the other three were all hugely popular in their time, not exactly hidden gems.

Nacktmull,
@Nacktmull@lemmy.world avatar

OP asked for games that too few people have played, not for hidden gems. That is not the same. For example, compared to the 500.000 reviews Baldurs Gate 3 has on steam, Divinity: Original Sin II, despite also being one of the best rpgs, has only 150.000.

FTL, which is easily in the top 5 of the best roguelites ever made has only 50.000 reviews, which is very little compered to Hades for example, which has 200.000.

Into the breach was never really popular, it has only 15.000 reviews on steam.

If you ask most gamers about those they usually have never heard about them or at least have not played those themselves. I would not call them particularly hidden but I think they deserve to be played by more people and that is what OP asked about.
