UpperBroccoli, do gaming w What games are you nostalgic towards but wouldn't go back and play?

I loved and hated Ultima VIII. It had a good story, was entertaining, had really good music, but it also had the most horrible jumping-on-moving-platforms torture of any game I have ever played. It also sent me on a quest they never implemented, a fact they forgot to tell the player.

Flashback was also a fantastic game, but I also do not ever want to play that again. I remember destroying a keyboard as a teen because I was so frustrated after missing the same stupid jump for the umpteenth time.

I really hate the feel of flashbacks controls. Like navigating on a grid. I really wanted more fluidity.

Fallout: New Vegas, specifically my Permadeath run. I still replay it, just not that same way.

Is that the pirate cat game? That was a fun game. I love puns and cats, so I’m very biased.

Yep!

Half-Life 2 is pretty much a must have. Black Mesa is a good remake of the original.

Outer Wilds is one of my favorite games. If he likes the explorey/other worldly feel of souls games, he might like it, but it certainly doesn’t have any combat.

As for fighting, I’ve recently started replaying Returnal, and I really enjoy that. It’s a well known console game, but I think it came out after 2020. It’s a roguelike format so slightly different from souls, but I love it.

ggtdbz,

Unfortunately he’s never been able to get into Outer Wilds despite it being one of my favorite games that I always shill. I’ll still push for him to play it.

otp, do games w We all need Seaman back in our lives!

With improved voice recognition, it could be great.

I’d definitely give it another go.

I also wouldn’t hate a game that connected to an AI LLM for conversations. That could be interesting, especially with a game like Seaman wrapped around the communications.

Looked over your privacy policy and it seems pretty reasonable. I was curious about how location is used though - could you give me the gist of what kind of in-game features I might miss out on by denying location permissions?

Hello_there, (edited )

... It doesn't use location? To my knowledge. It just tracks steps. That doesn't use GPS.

subignition,
@subignition@fedia.io avatar

From the Privacy Policy:

Location Data. We collect location data such as information about your device's location, which can be either precise or imprecise. How much information we collect depends on the type and settings of the device you use to access the Services. For example, we may use GPS and other technologies to collect geolocation data that tells us your current location (based on your IP address). You can opt out of allowing us to collect this information either by refusing access to the information or by disabling your Location setting on your device. However, if you choose to opt out, you may not be able to use certain aspects of the Services.

I was asking for clarification about the last line.

Hello_there,

Not sure - but I just looked in my version and the only permissions I have enabled are notifications and physical activity and everything works.
Maybe that's a holdover they need to delete?

schamppu,

Yup, mention of GPS is a holdover as I’ve used some privacy policy templates to create the policy. Legal writing isn’t really something I’ve done as an indie game dev before :D

Hello_there,

See lead devs response below.

schamppu,

The game doesn’t use location permission and doesn’t ask for it, and it will never require GPS data. We have that clause because we might at some point want to do rough location estimates using IP addresses, for instance to see how many players we have from specific countries.

I suck at writing legal stuff and English isn’t my native language, so I wrote the policy using different templates. We should probably remove the mention of GPS entirely as it’s quite misleading.

subignition,
@subignition@fedia.io avatar

Thank you for the details!

I definitely wouldn't recommend tweaking a legal document without the advice of a lawyer, especially when it's not in your native language, but hopefully the project will raise enough funds that you'll be able to hire someone to do that soon though! Fitness games are good ideas, and the art here looks real cute.

schamppu,

Thank you! Definitely our plan to get these documents through a lawyer when we can afford one. One of the surprises to me has been how many things there are these days that indie devs like myself need to deal with that are completely non-related (legal especially), and how expensive those can be. As we want to stay independent, we don’t have legal help from publishers, stakeholders etc. to deal with such.

How are you planning to monetize this?

Hello_there,

The FAQ states it. Looks like some combination of subscription for multiplayer elements / ongoing events or a one time fee for Single-Player. Tho, tbd. He hasn't really asked for feedback on that so far.

schamppu,

For the online version it’ll be affordable subscription. For single player a one time purchase.

  1. Remnant is a coop soulslike shooter, if that’s up your alley. Fun bosses, some puzzles with unique rewards if you get the clues (some are really hard and you’ll definitely end up looking up guides for most of them), and build variety is okay. Haven’t played Remnant 1, but Remnant 2 is fun.
  2. Outward is an indie open world RPG with survival mechanics. With mods, you can play with more than 2 people. It’s janky, but it has an old school approach to game design that feels refreshing. For instance, the ingame map is just a map, not a gps. You orient yourself with the on-screen compass and landmarks off in the distance. The levelling system is completely non-standard compared to modern rpgs, as it is classless, has skill trees (with passives and actives), and uses money, not XP, to level. So every red cent counts. The story is honestly not impressive. Not because of the presentation, but because there really isn’t much there. If you end up playing this, is because the exploration and builds are fun. Having to deal with environmental threats while you’re low on resources (e.g: can’t see but you ran out of lantern oil, freezing but don’t have a campfire, starving or dehydrated but have no food) adds a lot to the game, because combat is not easy until you get a good build going.
  3. Valheim could work if you’re up for it. Though not much of an RPG, it can be played like one with the right mods and world settings. You can tone down the survival aspects and increase the combat aspects. Nearly 0 story though. My only gripe in this regard with the game is that build variety only comes online in the latter half of the available content. Before Mistlands, everyone is either melee or range. Once you get Eitr, you can combine melee or range with magic. With mods though, you can get classes and unique enemies to hunt down.
  4. Same as before, Project Zomboid can be played like an RPG with the right mods, but you won’t find much of a story besides the ones you shape yourself in-game. There’s a lot to building a character, and you will get attached to them since infection is certain death, and then you have to roll up a new character. B42 just released on the unstable branch, but is only single player atm. B41 can be played multiplayer, and it has thousands of mods for you to tailor the experience. I’ve had a lot of fun playing on private servers with my friends. I treat it as a survival game, and they treat it as an RPG.
  5. Return to Moria might work? It’s not much of an RPG, but it has a loose story to egg you on. No builds, however.
  6. Wasteland 3, though its similar to BG3 I think. Haven’t played it online, and I think it’s limited to 2 people. Build variety is up there though, and the story is great.

Not really much to offer, now that I realize. If BG3 wasn’t your cup of tea you might not have a lot to choose from.

Outward

Outward looks interesting. I’m not completely sold on it because of the open-endedness and survival elements, but we might try it as it’s cheap.

Edit: we tried it for ~8h and liked the start but didn’t really get anything (combat, progression, etc.), so we dropped it as we weren’t enjoying it.
