Bloom and Rage is a perfect example of this. It’s a complete horrible garbage mess of soulless characters, terrible voice acting, horrible sound mixing, and a trash story and somehow it’s very positive. There are some negative, sane comments. I loved Life is Strange 1, but hooo boy is Bloom and Rage bad. It’s about a band and the music is not even music. It’s very funny, though.

Recently i played Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in Switch, because XC3 was very good and XC1 was even better. So i heard the community praising it, and i gave it a try. Man i hate this game so much, i really had years to play something just only to finish the story. This is the reason to always check both sides.

Rumpel4skin,

This is the exact game that came to my mind. Overwhelming positive reviews for a game that seems like it was created using Grandma’s description of “those funny Japanese cartoons my grandson watches” as the main creative direction. I know JRPGs are gonna have weeb elements but I didn’t expect the entire game to be capturing big tiddy anime girls to beat your enemies “with friendship”. Every boss you beat suddenly comes back alive and beats you in the cutscenes. Your still learning new game elements 40 hours in. One of your main teammates is a Jar Jar Binks character obsessed with building his own sex slave robot. My number one most hated game that i actually best mostly because I kept playing it thinking “at some point this has to stop being a pile of weeb dog shit and develop into a real game right?”

samus12345,

I liked all of them. What did you hate about 2?

nuko147,
@nuko147@lemm.ee avatar
  • Navigation was frustrating bad.
  • the mechanics until the 3/4 of the game were slow and not that fun.
  • dialogs felt bad and unfinished, also english VA was really bad.
  • the UI in general was bad.
  • the story felt shallow and the characters didn’t grow. Especially Rex felt as one of the worst protagonists.
  • Gatcha mechanic …
  • oversexualization of almost all female blades.
  • i won all boss fights, but the cutscenes kept showing that i was losing
  • i fought the last boss maybe 4 or 5 times.
  • i didn’t care for the world, because of the way that the game introduced it to me.

And many more. In general felt as an unfinished game, that they released just to hit the date. I don’t know how it has 83 metacritic score…

samus12345,

Definitely agree on gacha and oversexualization. I played with Japanese audio, so can’t comment on English VA. The rest I didn’t have an issue with, but I can see why someone else would.

I play, almost exclusively, non-AAA games. Some gems, known and hidden:

  • Autonauts and Autonauts Vs Piratebots - Cute automation games
  • Spelunky - Elegantly simple and well executed platformer
  • BPM: Bullets Per Minute - Rhythm FPS. Others have tried. None I have found have been as good.
  • Immortal Redneck - FPS roguelite
  • Ziggurat - FPS Roguelite
  • Receiver II - Unique FPS roguelike. Every part of everything that moves is simulated. The hammer on your gun hits a firing pin which hits the primer on the cartridge. You can get stovepipes, misfires, double feeds, etc. You don’t reload by hitting ‘reload’ but go through the full manual of arms in a shooter where the tolerances for failure are fairly slim.
  • Valley - running game. The feeling of letting a hill propel your running to otherwise impossible speeds, bottled. Nice little story too.
  • Dredge - Lovecraftian fishing game.
  • Tunnet - lovecraftian network technician simulator. Build a network to allow communication between computers in an underground society with unspeakable horrors occasionally destroying your mind/body.
  • Opus Magnum - Programming puzzles
  • Vagante - roguelike with tight tolerances
  • Ruiner - Cyberpunk slash n dash with a soundtrack half by Sidewalks and Skeletons. Very fun.
  • Tails Noir - Detective story. Normally find the anthro thing a bit tiresome but this was pretty good. Well written.
  • Elderborn - First person brawler
  • Webbed - be a peacock spider. Rescue your lady spider. Help insects. Fight a bird. Dance.
  • A Story About My Uncle - Movement game. Jump, dash, grapnel. Simple and elegant.
  • Tormentor X Punisher - Top down twin stick shooter. Everything dies in one hit. All the enemies, and you.
  • Tin Can - Survival game in which you try to keep up an escape pod long enough to be rescued, which is hard when it seems to have been made by the lowest bidder’s lowest bidding subcontractor and maintained with all the loving care of a convenience store bathroom.

Tails Noir was a cool little game! I really liked it. 🤩

Sunsofold,

I liked that it wasn’t a parody of itself. Most of the writing could have been unchanged if it hadn’t been anthro themed. And the writing was nice, nothing ham-fisted, and had some respect for the reader. I keep running into games where you’ve just talked to an NPC about how they need you to hit the blue button, and you’ve gone through a hallway of posters saying your goal is to hit the blue button, had a quest marker guiding you there that says ‘this way to the blue button you need to press,’ and your character still feels the need to speak to the air about the need to hit the blue button when you walk into the blue button room.

Here are the ones that don’t get uninstalled from my potato box:

  • Sable
  • Ion Fury
  • Torchlight
  • Ziggurat
  • Baba Is You
  • Edritch
  • Fez
  • Plunge
  • Valley
  • Into The Breach
  • Journey

(Disclaimer: some are very old, some may not be indie, eh, I did my best.)

AceFuzzLord,

With the amount of content the main game of Baba Is You comes with, alongside the level editor and custom modded level packs people have made for it, would 100% recommend it.

N++

Undoubtedly the best, most complete 2D platformer I’ve ever played. Super tight controls and incredible level design, coupled with an episode-long timer mechanic that you can influence makes this one absolutely unmatched. Sure, games like Celeste are flashier, but nothing is a better game than N++. I think I put something like 120 hours into this to get the platinum on PS4. I would happily start over and play the whole thing from scratch again.

I can’t recommend Celeste enough, personally.

I will warn you that the platforming can be challenging, but if it’s too stressful Celeste offers almost unparalleled accessibility options that will allow you fine control over the difficulty so no matter your skill level you’ll be able to progress.

Great story, cozy atmosphere but still emotional impact, and the only “fighting” you do is against yourself.

Amazing game, highly recommend Celeste

The first life is strange game. I suppose there is technically a violent part but it’s not a game based on violence.

simop_jo,

Exactly this. Life is strange will make you feel like a teenage girl solving a mystery. Its awesome.

FeelzGoodMan420,

And the best part is that this game is good no matter what. Older straight white dude? No problem. Still fun and interesting. It shows how well done it was.

Kazumara,

Agreed, I played it the first time when I was 26, and I’m a straight Swiss and German man. Freaking love playing as Max. I played it two more times after that, and also the Chloe focused prequel.

FeelzGoodMan420,

Before the Storm? Yea that one was really good too. I never played any of the other games though. They never looked as good. Also i heard the newest one was dogshit.

Kazumara,

Yes same here. I did watch a bit of someone else playing the one with the two Mexican brothers running away, but never really had the motivation to play it myself. I guess I just found time power to be much more interesting.

scbasteve7,

I already knew the struggles that women have to endure that most men don’t. But playing this game really put that into perspective, with how immersed I became. By the end of the game, I felt emotionally wreck.

Very much a “girly” game, just in an entirely different sense.

Elevator7009, (edited ) do games w Recommendations for "girly" games?

A lot of !cozygames and !lifesimulation games would fit. !otomegames are romance visual novels aimed at women interested in men and a lot would fit too.

!infinitynikki is an open world dressup game very marketed at women and has that soft pink color scheme, warning for being a F2P gacha game although you can progress without ever spending money. I usually avoid gacha but gameplay is legitimately good and “good gameplay,” “high budget,” and “for women” is a combination this game hits that I do not see too often in video games. (Other commenter is right there is a lot of girly shovelware.) There is combat, but it’s definitely not the main focus. Very soft and pink. You might also like Beglitched (DEFINITELY pink and soft), and Style Savvy for Nintendo DS. I have been meaning to play both of those so I can’t offer perspective on if they fill the romance ask, though Beglitched has combat. You might also enjoy Slime Rancher, also lots of pink and soft. Although it’s also not combat-free it’s not the main point either. Cattails was fun, kind of like Stardew but with cats instead, although as with Stardew combat does exist (though if I recall correctly it’s optional and not the main focus).

Now probably my recommendation least like what you are asking for: I love the Touhou Project series. Don’t let the male-dominated fandom and the tons of sexualized art of the characters fool you, the games don’t sexualize the characters at all—I would feel very comfortable showing them to a 5 year old or Grandma. It is basically a bunch of superpowered women from Japanese mythology/folklore shooting very pretty lasers at each other. The focus is actually combat here, but I figured I’d give it a mention. Not specifically aimed at women but it’s not not aimed at us either. Lovely music too.

Source: am girly girl who also plays video games

RightHandOfIkaros,

My first Touhou game was on PC-9801, “The Highly Responsive to Prayers.” I think its the first Touhou game ever made? Not sure. I am not really much of an Outbreak or Arkanoid fan though, so I didn’t really care for it.

Then I tried “The Story of Eastern Wonderland,” which was extremely different from the previous game. I liked it more, but danmaku Shmup style games aren’t really my thing. They’re fine for a 30 minute stint, but I usually don’t play those kinds of games any longer than that.

I am sure Touhou has branched out since then, is there a Touhou game you might recommend that is different from those?

Elevator7009, (edited )

Most of the main series are shmups, but they have a few fighting games. I had a lot of fun with them! That would be Immaterial and Missing Power, Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, and Touhou Hisoutensoku. There are more recent ones too, which I admit I have not tried: Hopeless Masquerade, Urban Legend in Limbo, and Antinomy of Common Flowers. Cool to have found a PC-98 player!

There are also many fan games out there of different genres! A metroidvania, a puzzle game, long list… en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Fangames

Do not. Great game tho

RightHandOfIkaros,

Great game, but definitely pay attention to the warnings the game gives the player, not only in the game itself but also on its Steam/download page.

Again, amazing game. But not a game for recommendation without a warning of its extremely heavy and violent content.

I just went through this tree about a week ago. Downloaded the app for iOS to try it and would say it wasn’t ready for mainstream. It looks very similar to discord but it just consistently would crash or send me back to the website in order to get anything done. Even the main channel for Revolt would hang and not load properly. That and iOS is on TestFlight… not gonna work well for non tech enthusiasts who know how about it. That

I have a small server on Discord and would love to move it. But the people on it aren’t super tech savvy and the replacement will need to work. Plus, I have less desire to go from one centralized service to another, especially when the backup doesn’t work well. Wish Element would get it together with the phone app and make spaces appear as they do on the computer. That and stable call/video channels.

It would be nice to see a capable app built on matrix platform. Or just another capable platform that has a well working app. Just my two cents.

derin,
@derin@lemmy.beru.co avatar

SchildiChat Next is a mini-fork of Element X with proper spaces support (and some other nice UI additions).

I say mini-fork as it’s basically just EleX with some UI patches - so it follows EleX actively.

LordKitsuna,

Aaaaand this touches on the problem with matrix in general, no standard is properly followed, way too many forks with feature support all over the place

derin,
@derin@lemmy.beru.co avatar

There’s only one standard, it has no forks. The discussion is about a filtering feature.

A lot of people don’t seem to respect spaces and communities - from my perspective it looks like the devs are currently pivoting to make the official client look and act more like Telegram/Signal/WhatsApp than Discord/IRC.

Your issue is that the dev team of EleX not prioritizing a feature you want.

If anything, this is a strength of an open source ecosystem: someone who agrees with you was able to, months ago, setup a fork that appeals to your work flow.

Try that with Discord, next time!

LordKitsuna,

There is a single standard with no forks, I said not a single one followed. I run my own Matrix Home Server and use it frequently, there are a lot of different clients and there are a good number of them that do run their own features that are not exactly in Spec because one does not yet exist in the official spec. Stickers used to be a good example of that I remember when there were like three different clients Each of which implemented them in a different weird way until the spec finally landed on an implementation.

And even within this back there are some basic features not supported on certain clients and other such problems. I’m just saying it’s not an alternative to Discord and it will never be mainstream because it’s too confusing and frustrating from the perspective of a standard user.

Same concept that made bluesky get popular over mastodon, trying to find anything on Mastodon of interest is a chore because there’s no real Central spot to do everything the very nature of it is that it’s scattered to the winds, there’s also multiple apps available for Mobile on Mastodon Each of which have different layouts, different features, and normal people that just want to be able to find their topic of Interest can’t be bothered to deal with that

derin,
@derin@lemmy.beru.co avatar

Yeah, all good points - especially the stuff relating to stickers (also, custom emojis).

Still, I’m hoping element gets their shit together and improves the default element apps (also brings Web/Desktop up to par with Mobile).

commander, do games w Reminder if you're leaving Discord for this Revolt server ( Linux + Steam Deck devs / creators)

In terms of desktop applications, looks like Element and Revolt look pretty comparable these days. Mobile app Revolt looks better to me. Matrix seems way more established considering downloads of Element (there’s numerous Matrix applications) on Google Play and FlatHub

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

By memory there’s a community-made app for Revolt as well, but I can’t remember what its called, or the git link! When I find it again, I’ll link it here :)

EncryptKeeper,

Mobile app Revolt is nice, but doesn’t support servers that aren’t the main one yet last I tried.
