Katana314, do games w Gacha games are out of control. Gambling shouldn't be so widespread

It’s a small measure, but I’d really like to see a law where gacha games need to publicly advertise their odds and allow independent verification.

The biggest effect it would have is, the odds would need to be static. Many gacha systems have been accused of putting a hand on the wheel, assuring someone “so close to their needed item” must keep going through a series of failures.

trashgirlfriend,

This is already a thing in most gacha games due to laws that already exist in certain countries.

The way the gacha works is very public knowledge for every popular one, and can be verified by the players.

BruceTwarzen,

I don’t really know a lot about gatcha games, the only one i played was some DBZ game, because i wanted to get back into DBZ, and shiny things. I never payed money for it, because honestly i didn’t really see the point, aside from it being an obvious waste of money, and at the end of the day, i never felt like i missed out of anything, because of maybe luck or just grinding or not caring enough.

anyway, i’m pretty sure they said what the odds are of pulling a specific card, and that it’s like in the 1% or 0.5% or whatever. But i don’t think that helps at all, because people who gamble like to game, no matter the odds.

UnderpantsWeevil,
@UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world avatar

Without spending money, a lot of these games simply become boring and deeply repetitive over time.

The system for farming “free” in game currency feels more like a chore than entertainment. The benefits of each upgrade is more marginal while the adversaries progress rapidly.

There’s a “git good” angle to this kind of game, as it drifts from an FF-on-easy-mode to Dark-Souls-on-Legendary. But if I want that experience, why not just buy a copy of a Souls game?

Certainly Eldin Ring is worth a few hundred hours, has a much richer experience, and won’t immolate my wallet inside a month.

i mean, genshin kinda does this?? ingame on the wish screen they tell you about their pity system, where 75-100 is a guarenteed top-tier drop

rockerface, do games w Is overwatch 2 really that bad?

It’s not that bad. The vocal minority likes to cry

Moneo,

I agree. I was a die-hard ow1 fan and quit because of the absolute disgrace that was the transition from OW1 -> OW2. I have every reason to hate OW2 but I don’t because it’s a fine game and improves on OW1 in every way that is important to me (gameplay and balance).

rockerface,

Yeah, the OW2 launch was a disaster, but saying the game now is worse than OW1 was is just rose tinted glasses

Eggyhead, do games w Why Do People Still Play Destiny 2?

What main storyline? I jumped in late and none of it made sense. I couldn’t even figure out what order I had to play. Gameplay was great as long as it wasn’t PVP.

Yeah they made the genius decisions that new players should be dropped into whatever dlc they were Hocking right then and worse than that they removed dlc, never to be played again. They burned some hard bridges with me on that

I’ll never support Bungie again. I bought D1 and D2 before it went free to play, only to have the game I bought removed from the face of the Earth.

t3rmit3, (edited ) do gaming w Moneyless Harvest Moon-type game?

I think you want Roots of Pacha.

Contribution is a currency used in Roots of Pacha. When the player donates food or supplies to the clan, contribution points are awarded as acknowledgement of their efforts.

Contribution points must be expended to develop ideas. Certain clan members have items for trade in exchange for points, as well.

Items are donated by placing them in the contribution bin, found just north of the bonfire. Donated items may be viewed and retrieved until the end of the day. The value of the contributions is tallied overnight and the bin is emptied for the next day.

It’s not just a rename of money, it’s more like your social renown in the village, like how much people respect you because of your contributions, and you use it mostly to choose what improvement project you want to build next in the village.

Aside from all of the problems with the game itself, I think they must've had one of the most unfortunate launch moments. Hero shooters had been pretty much on the downturn and then just before they launched, Deadlock went public and suckered quite a lot of the hero shooter audience into playing a full-on MOBA/FPS hybrid. And Deadlock is very quietly breaking all kinds of silly records for what's technically an invite-only alpha (currently #8 on Steam's most played with 137k concurrent players).

jaggedrobotpubes, do games w Is Elder Scrolls 6 doomed to fail? I can't see how it will work

They did not fail spectacularly with Fallout 4. They didn’t even fail.

I am willing to compromise at “muted success”, but no more.

Speaking of Fallout, do Fallout 1 and 2 have any proper spiritual successors? I’d love to play one!

Wasteland. Though, technically speaking, Fallout is the successor to it.

MissGutsy,

I can recommend “Encased”. It’s a CRPG that’s heavily inspired by Fallout gameplay wise, but it’s modernized a lot (in a good way). It has its own unique story and setting which are amazing to explore

I mean my Minecraft Skin isn’t a normal skin and during early adventure, I slap that on, what I find. Also hats (from a mod).

Most people are laughing but I think it could get good, if they do it right. They actors need to reflect the wide playerbase. Jason Momoa could be the old school vanilla survival player, that played up to the early release version. The boy could be a modern MP minigame server player. Jack Black could be the Griefer/Anarchie player.

There is potential to make it good but they could easily screw this up. Minecraft is a game without a story and the only story Minecraft has, is from the players (and viewers of Minecraft YouTubers, without poiting out a specific one, due to obvious regional differences. I mean would you know a German Minecraft YouTuber and get the references?) and their memories. Without that, I don’t see how this can get good.

Kolanaki, do games w What's your favorite controller?
!deleted6508 avatar

Used to be the Logitech F310. Simple, reliable, used my preferred layout, inexpensive, and durable.

Then I got a PS5 and experienced the DualSense’s adaptive triggers and I can’t go back.

Jesus_666,

Honestly, it’s still the F310 for me. I have mine since the early 2010s and it’s still working perfectly. Those things are built like tanks and between XInput and DirectInput are compatible with just about any PC game of the last forty years, no extra software required. Also, they’re dirt cheap.

Honorable mention to the F710, the wireless version. While Windows 10’s USB stack unfortunately broke compatibility with it (causing randomly dropped inputs), Linux does not have that problem.

dwindling7373,

I have two and I can’t vouch for the “built like a tank” since one of them once in a while decides to drift around.

Still 110% worth it for the price.

Kolanaki,
!deleted6508 avatar

Could just be dirty. The only time I had weird stick issues was because a hair got caught under the right stick and kept making my aim jump around willy nilly. They’re pretty easy to take apart and put back together if you have the right screwdrivers.

dwindling7373,

I’ll look into it, thanks.

Rai,

I had a Dualsense for my computer just because it has the best D-pad

Then I got Returnal and experienced the haptics and triggers and HOLY SHIT. I tried a keyboard and mouse and the game felt FLAT. It really is incredible! Pacific Drive also takes full advantage of it, the brake trigger feels like and actual car brake and the accelerator trigger rumbles and vibrates with the haptics as you go.

Absolutely fuckin dope.

ilhamagh,

Do you need to do any config to use the adaptive trigger on PC? And I assume it mainly supported on Sony’s first party title ?

Rai,

No extra confit, it just works! It has to be plugged in, though, and it only works work certain titles (pretty much only Sony stuff. I can’t remember if pacific drive is Sony?)

ilhamagh,

I’ve looked at some lists and it actually supported by much more games than I thought, I don’t think Assassin Creeds is Sony title no?

Sony’s rep kinda iffy around repairability though, how long is yours ?

Rai,

I’m not sure, I haven’t played Assassin’s Creed since the first game :c

I have two controllers and my oldest is two years old or so, and I have had zero issues with them personally! I treat all of my stuff reeeeeeally nice, though, so I don’t usually have issues with things.

paddirn, do games w What are your opionions on fortnite?

I grew up playing FPS shooters like Doom, Quake, Tribes, Team Fortress, Counter-Strike, etc, but I had avoided Fortnite for awhile because it just seemed like a kid’s game, whatever. Then my oldest son started getting into it and we’d play matches together, and suddenly I felt out of my element. The addition of building mechanics adds in a whole other element that you don’t really have to think about in other games. Granted, it’s not realistic being able to build shit that quickly, but whatever, it’s a game. And seeing some of the skill involved with these people running/gunning/building elaborate forts and the sort of battles that play out between two people gets insane sometimes.

Another interesting aspect of it is all the cross-marketing that goes on, you’ve got almost every major franchise represented in some way, shape, or form. It reminds me of Ready Player One. It sounds dumb, but Fortnite is probably the closest thing to a Metaverse that we currently have. I mean, hell, Emperor Palpatine somehow returned in between the movies in Fortnite (a dark day for Star Wars fandom).

Zahille7,

God, that Star Wars thing legitimately pissed me off back when it happened. I still feel kinda bad about it, but I’ve mostly gotten over Star Wars as a whole by this point thanks to Disney.

I tried fortnite once a couple years back and I had no idea what I was doing. I tried to play their weird among us mode but I kept dying within like 30 seconds.

peopleproblems, do games w RuneScape is increasing their membership price by 50%, and Reddit is trying to censor it

I was literally looking at playing again with the Sailing announcement

Now it’s… No. I remember $5 back in the day and that was awesome.

Rhaedas,
@Rhaedas@fedia.io avatar

It's not a popular opinion, and I'm sure I'll get downvoted for the reminder, but what is $5 then in 2024 dollars? Just to keep a perspective that inflation does happen, and $5 is not a lot of money now.

However, if you're getting less of a product with a lot of eye candy to hide that fact, then get the pitchforks back out. In the end it's a matter of if it's worth the cost, no matter what the amount is.

yeldarb12,

I looked up an inflation calculator and it said $8.33 Cumulative inflation from 2004 to now is 66.5%

Rhaedas,
@Rhaedas@fedia.io avatar

So with the enhancements since then $10 is probably a fair price. I just figure being okay to pay $12 but bailing for a few more dollars for a "luxury" product seems overblown, but again...it's up to the buyer on if they feel they are getting a good buy.

I never was a Runescape player, but I was hardcore Ultima Online in the early days. Looking at the newest versions out there, it's intriguing, but also so much more complex now that I think I'd enjoy watching gameplay more than playing it now. Age catches up to you.

x00za,

Yes but it’s not fair if it’s per character.

WoW has 65 character slots for $15.00 monthly. RuneScape has 1 character for $12.00 monthly.

Rhaedas,
@Rhaedas@fedia.io avatar

I can see that as a deal breaker. Odd that they don't have multiple slots at this point, that's been a thing with games forever.

x00za,

Most people didn’t use alt accounts because even a main account takes ages to train.

But nowadays there’s different game modes like ironman, and many people have one as well as a main.

DrSteveBrule,

I think the worst thing about their subscription price is that it is very close to the same price as WoW or FF14, but with runescape you can only have 1 character. If you enjoyed a quest or lower level content, you have to create a new account with its own subscription. If you want to try an Ironman or hardcore character, that’s a whole other account and subscription.

x00za,

Sailing made me quit the game lol.

Just a bunch of old people wanting new stuff.

Eventually we’ll just get an Oldschool Oldschool Runescape.

They keep adding content just to add content, it’s pretty obvious.

MrKarato, do gaming w Need tips, when is a non-campaign game considered 'completed'?

Just play until you don’t feel like it anymore. If you need a milestone, clear a match/run/whatever on the highest difficulty. Or maybe every variety, so in Civ, a victory of each type. Or if you feel like going hard, find a rating you want to get and get there, like Celestial in Strive. I would say just play until you feel satisfied though. Don’t worry about what others think of your completion metric. None will satisfy everyone.

SuperSaiyanSwag,

Thank you! I would like to say that this is not for anyone, but myself. I just like to keep a tally for myself to make my way through my backlog, I almost never feel satisfied with just doing some match in civ for instance, so I like your idea of getting different win types.

Golf Club Nostalgia(917 Reviews)

This is a game that isn’t here for the game play. I think if you are paying at all attention to the boring dystopia, or climate collapse communities then this will hit in a way that is hard to define.

Its a golf game. Simple, could be played on a phone really, but you have to have the sound on for this one.
You are a member of the elite refugees who have fled to Mars and only return back to Earth to use the husk of a planet for a round of golf. And your companion is a lone radio broadcast from Mars of what they have left, which is stories and the rare music that was saved.

The combination of overwhelmingly good world building and consistent vibe even down to the level names and journal entries hits like a train and made me cry at least a couple times.
It made me feel nostalgiac for a world that has not yet come to pass and is a great on sale pick.
