PunchingWood, do games w Shower thought, traversal in open world games have turned from game mechanics to loading screens

I think God of War is fine since the entire experience is supposed to be one that does not get interrupted, there are never any camera cuts, and they hid a few loading screens behind portal effects.

I liked the Jedi Survivor style as well, it feels natural and doesn’t interrupt the gameplay. Much like Outlaws using cleverly hidden cutscenes to go from planet to space and other planets. It all keeps you in the immersion and experience. Climbing and other parkour stuff don’t feel out of place in these games, it would be quite boring if everything in games existed only on a flat plane and you’d never ever have to turn corners or climb anything, takes away the idea of exploration and discovering new things.

I much prefer the modern solutions over elevators and loading screens. Nothing is stopping anyone from just hitting pause and stretch their fingers if you feel like you need a break lol

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

God of War always struck me as the wrong game for that gimmick. Sure, there are no camera cuts, but you need to pull up your menu constantly to check the map, change gear, etc. It ends up feeling like there are hundreds of cuts.

Kalothar,

I’ve been playing God Of War Ragnarok and haven’t felt the need really to use the map much at all.

I do find the armor system to be annoying and basically decided to ignore all the gear I pick up, sell it, and upgrade the base items all the way instead because of the buffs the beginning gear gets if you upgrade all the way. All that to say I wish they just had a more robust leveling system instead.

Otherwise minus my deaths (playing on God Of War difficulty ) I’ve been feeling pretty immersed in it.

AceFuzzLord, do games w 2024 is about 75% done. Let's recommend the best games of 2024, but with a twist: only the ones with no paid DLC!

Peglin (Steam, iOS, Android, Switch)

Just released 1.0 a month ago. Simple enough gameplay loop. Throw orbs at pegs on board to fight enemies. Go down different paths on a map until you reach the boss fight at the bottom, upgrading and getting new orbs and relics along the way to help. Repeat 2 more times and you win. Has 20 levels of increasing difficulty after beating your first run, but locked behind standard progression.

Dungoens and Degenerate Gamblers (Steam)

Released beginning of last month. Play Blackjack against opponents, but you each have a life bar. Score higher than opponent to deal damage equal to the difference in your scores to them. Various non-playing cards and other nonsensical cards will appear as playable cards. Things like a get well soon card, SD card, a flat out 21 card, a birthday card, and many more can be found. Go until you either lose all your health or beat the final boss on one of two different routes to be taken.

ouch,

Could you split this into two comments, as per rule 2? It makes it easier to vote and discuss without mixing both.

mesamunefire,

Peglin is great.

Another_earthling,

How long can you play the game without getting bored?

mesamunefire,

I have over 300 hours still going. It’s only if you like that kind of game.

Another_earthling,

I do. It’s on my wishlist because I have so many new games that I didn’t play yet that it wouldn’t make sense to buy it now I just wondered, in regard to the gameplay, if some people eventually feel bored after some days :) so thanks for the feedback

Tagger, do games w Horse archers ruin every game they are in.

It’s chess where I find they’re super op - I mean seriously, the ability to no scope bishops from across the map while moving like a knight is totally unbalanced and the Devs need to too back the update.

Razzazzika, do games w What letter has the best games?

F encompasses all the Final Fantasy , Final Fight, Fable, Fallout, Far Cry, Forza Horizon series, and some individual games like Forspoken, Forsaken, Fez, Fermi Paradox, Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy, Fae Tactics and many others.

BastingChemina,

Factorio !

Noodle07,

That’s all you need really

De_Narm, do games w What letter has the best games?

For the sake of adding something new, X is pareto optimal in terms of having both the best and the fewest games.

  • Xenogears
  • Xenosaga (maybe, haven’t played it yet)
  • Xenoblade anything
  • X-COM anything

I’d probably be content with only playing games from the Xeno- meta-series alone.

The problem isn’t the people voluntarily participating in the world’s biggest grift losing money.

The problem is the real world consequences for other people.

    MolochAlter,

You realise this isn’t make believe at all, right? Stocks are ownership.

If a stock dips low enough it’s possible to do what microsoft did with Activision Blizzard and buy out another company wholesale, for instance.

Speculation on the stock market isn’t the reason the market exists, it’s a side effect of its pricing mechanisms, the actual point of it is to gather money for companies and gather stake for buyers.

If a major company like Ubisoft keeps tanking, odds are you can look forward to another major buyout and merger which will make the already horribly oligopolistic game industry even smaller, which is not good for anyone involved.

    1984,
    @1984@lemmy.today avatar

I think gaming in general have it hard now. There are millions of games and only a handful are best sellers.

I feel the same about movies. So many, but just a few are worth watching because they are original.

    MolochAlter,

That’s just generally all of media right now. We are at perhaps the highest level of accessibility for media creation we’ve ever been, but that means that any schmuck with a pair of thumbs and time to waste can make something.

High accessibility means abysmal signal/noise ratio, turns out.

    TexasDrunk,

It does. There are some upsides, though. One bonus is that, at least in some small ways, some of these shitbag companies that have acted terribly in the past are letting up because we have options. We don’t have to rely on a couple of big studios for every game we play. So EA has backed off of their terrible launcher.

I also think it’s kind of cool that any schmuck can make their dream come true. I’ve definitely put out a bunch of music that I don’t market, just because I always wanted to do it. Anyone with an idea and a laptop can code up a game. The ridiculous amount of shovelware aside, I think that’s pretty cool.

I just wish there was a better way to sift through the dreck to find the good stuff.

    MolochAlter,

Yeah I mean, it’s got upsides and downsides, like everything. Unparalleled access means anyone can make something, which means a lot of things that have niche appeal can find their audience, etc.

It also means a lot of things without any appeal will be out there.

It’s not good or bad in itself but it can be impractical on the consumer side of the equation, and it makes even the remarkable stuff very likely to just disappear in the shuffle.

    half_built_pyramids,

Except out doesn’t have to be that way. Bringing back anti monopoly regulation would prevent more consolidation.

    MolochAlter,

Sure, but the stock is tanking now, and the regulations are not on the books.

Like, I agree there needs to be an overhaul of a bunch of regulations regarding monopolies and such, but this doesn’t help analysing the current situation where they’re not in place.

    @ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe it didn’t do as well as they’d hoped, but back of the napkin guesstimates sure make it hard to believe DD2 wasn’t profitable.

    Jaderick,

I played it in alpha (?) when it first came out and it was alright. I played it for like 3 hours, but never felt a desire to revisit it.

    warm,

Darkest Dungeon was just one of them titles that isn't that suited for a sequel.

    Whitebrow,

I agree with the sentiment and it’s weird that it can be applied to quite a few recent games, frostpunk 2 comes to mind as the latest one of these

    warm,

It's an attempt at piggybacking off the success of the first game, but they don't take the time to understand why it was successful and if a sequel is needed. I'd love to see devs try something new when they find success instead of just pumping out a number 2.

    mosiacmango,

I read it more like they did well, but after a decade making the same game in a couple of iterations, they just want to be done. So sell the company, make 10x what you could running it, and just head on out.

Xenny, do games w I think Sims is a dead franchise now

New sims game? This is the first I’m hearing of it. A complaint thread on Lemmy. Game’s DOA

    RabbitMix,

no, that’s the problem, there won’t be a new Sims game. Sims 4 has been a zombie of a Sims game since it came out 10 years ago and EA just announced that they’re more than happy to let it’s corpse shuffle around for the foreseeable future, rather than make a Sims 5 that people actually like.

    Xenny,

Oh I thought we all agreed that the Sims 4 was trash and that we would stick with the Sims 3 forever

HAL_9_TRILLION, do games w I think Sims is a dead franchise now

I recently was holding out hope for a franchise that was similarly treated. I can tell you from experience that Sims 5 will make a billion dollars and they will then fire all the programmers who made it.

Meltrax, do games w Stardew Valley 1.6 is Coming November 4th.

I’ve heard the hype but I have never played this game. What am I missing out on?

    Empricorn,

There’s farming and fishing, tons to collect and craft and upgrade, there’s dungeons, there’s relationships and rare items, and variety of play in the seasons and festivals… But for me, my favorite thing is just how damn charming it all is. The soundtrack is great and atmospheric, even the sound effect of just chopping down a tree is so perfect and satisfying. And IMO, there’s no game that’s a better example of “play at your own pace”. It’s pretty cheap and appeals to such a wide variety of gamers… So give it a try!

    irotsoma,

If you like this genre of games, then this is one of the best, so yes, play it. It’s a great, addictive, one more… kind of game with a ton of stuff to do, lots of goals short and long term.

I never really care for the dating sim portion of these kinds of games all that much, so I can’t comment on that part much, but the rest is great!

    SatyrSack,

Game changing updates like this every so often that make you feel like it is an unfinished game still in early access. You may as well just wait until it is finished to actually start playing.

    TommySoda,

Bro, the man’s basically releasing free dlc not updating an early access game. The game was never in early access and all your saves are compatible with the new expansions (I sometimes still play the same farm I’ve had since the game was first released). The game already has more content than any other game in the genre and ConcernedApe is still releasing all updates for free and promised to never charge for anything new added to the game. What is there to complain about when you’re getting free shit where in most games it costs $5 to $10?

    SatyrSack,

My issue with Stardew Valley content updates is that they change how the game works. It is not just adding extra postgame missions or something. The content updates tend to fundamentally change how some things work. Your possible/preferred routes to reach endgame today are much different than they were in 2016. It makes it feel like perpetual Early Access.

    TommySoda,

I don’t know what game you’re playing because I’ve never run into this issue before. I’ve played through year 4 on several different farms and never encountered anything of this magnitude. I’ve been playing this game since day one and have had nothing but positive experiences and so has pretty much everyone else. If minor adjustments to gameplay are enough to classify a game as being in perpetual Early Access, then every single game that is being made today is in perpetual Early Access. In fact in most games you don’t even get the new content with the updates. Also, the game costs $20 it’s not like you’re spending over $100 for the Premium Deluxe Edition Game of the Year Season Pass Preorder Bundle. It’s $20 and goes on sale so frequently you could pick it up for $5 four or five times a year.

    SatyrSack,

As an illustration, grab an endgame save from 1.0 and open it up in a modern version of the game. The moment you step out of the door, you will be greeted with a series of cutscenes/dialogs explaining several of the various game mechanics that were added in the versions since 1.0. These are game mechanics that, if they had been part of the game from the start, would have greatly altered how one would have chosen to play and reach endgame. One may have prioritized different crops, events, upgrades, relationships, decorations, etc.

Stardew Valley is absolutely worth the money, and the content updates definitely make it even more of a bargain. But calling the transition from 1.0 to 1.6+ “minor adjustments to gameplay” is disingenuous.

I just miss the days when games were already finished upon release.

    Charapaso,

The point folks are making is that Stardew was finished on release, it’s just that the developer has the passion and financial ability to continue to improve it.

If it was 1994, maybe the game would have been released on a cartridge and never changed for myriad reasons (publishing rights, being on physical media, etc).

Example: Super Metroid was one of the best games ever made, and was complete when it was released, but you better believe I’d take free updates that further improve on it. There’s always improvements to make, because nothing can really be perfect. Those hypothetical updates wouldn’t retroactively make it an incomplete game. Maybe it’s too a subtle philosophical point

    Empricorn,

As another example, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the best game ever made, in my opinion. But there’s a laughable amount of glitches in it and speedrunners can easily tear the game apart. So it’s not perfect. It’s also old and the graphics are dated. If it were somehow still supported today, there would be a high-resolution texture pack released, no doubt about it…

    rigatti,
    @rigatti@lemmy.world avatar

    Calling Stardew unfinished is hilarious.

    SatyrSack,

What would you call it? Live service does not really fit

A video game that happens to get big updates every so often…? Call 'em expansion packs if that makes life easier

    rigatti,
    @rigatti@lemmy.world avatar

I would call it a complete game that was finished a long time ago but has a passionate developer who provides free content updates. It’s definitely not a live service game, as there are no microtransactions and the updates are free.

    Empricorn,

Wow, AAA publishers really did a number on us all, huh? Think of them as “expansions”. The game was absolutely complete on 1.0 and you can still get that version! I have most of my time playing the game on v1.0.

The developer then added more content to the game, for free. The bug fixes have been pretty minor and would have happened with paid updates or without, like any modern game…

    Tarquinn2049,

Would you say to not play World of Warcraft until it is “finished”? It has huge game changing updates all the time.

    SatyrSack,

“Games as a service” are by design never really finished, right? If you are cool with that, go for it. I have never personally tried one.

    Bluefalcon,

Great game with some simple fighting against creatures, foraging, farming, fishing, building, simple life role playing, romance, and all good vibs. Everything is optional though.

    EnderMB,

It has essentially killed Harvest Moon as the established farm simulator for relaxed gaming.

If you know someone that loves games, but hates fighting or quick skill-based stuff, they will lose hundreds of hours to this game.

    pearsaltchocolatebar,

Fields of Mysteria is looking pretty promising as a stardew replacement

    growsomethinggood,

I’d hesitate to call it a replacement but it is very fun! Top of the Stardew-likes imo

    Fields of Mistria

    Landless2029,

Yeah well Samsung killed harvest moon so we needed a successor.

ConcernedApe fucking delivered. Much relax. Very cute. Such plot.

    TommySoda,

If you like this genre this game is at the very top. I played Harvest Moon back in the day and this game surpasses it in almost every way. Plus, it’s $20 and goes on sale for less than that very frequently, sometimes as low as $5. It’s not like you’re losing much if you pick it up. It’s one of my top games on my PC with over 700 hours.

GammaGames, (edited ) do gaming w let's discuss: non major systems

I immediately wanted a Playdate when I saw it. It’s a little yellow handheld with a crank designed by Teenage Engineering and made by Panic, who’s also published Firewatch, Untitled Goose Game, and a bunch more games recently.

I’ve had it for a year and still use it daily, the screen works great most places I’m waiting in line and I have a book light for the evenings.

One thing I really like about it is that it’s not an emulation device. It comes with 24 games +2 free on the Catalog and the community has made a ton (over 1000 on itch!). They’re mostly bespoke little titles that aren’t available anywhere else. The Lua and C SDKs are easy to use and encourage homebrew, I’ve got a pomodoro timer launching in the on-device storefront next week and am currently working on a little suika-like. Definitely recommend if you’ve got the spare cash!

Plus it’s got a pizza case! I love it so

    GammaGames,

I do recommend it! The season (delivered over 12 weeks) is sometimes hit or miss, but that’s mostly because there’s something for everyone. And being so dev friendly is a huge bonus if you’re into that

    cloudless,

I want one but it’s way too expensive.

    GammaGames,

I can see why, unfortunately it’s a little over $100 just to make the device so I can’t see it going down much. We can’t really get economies of scale for such a niche product

Sometimes you can get a good deal used!

    sleepybisexual,

    Same sentiment

    Megaman_EXE,

None of the others are as good as Until Dawn, imo, unfortunately :( I keep hoping, but no joy every time

FMT99, do games w Does AAAA just mean awful triple A games now?

I looked at an “AAA” game maybe twice in give or take the last decade and both times have regretted it. Indie games are the bomb.

givesomefucks, do games w Does AAAA just mean awful triple A games now?

I mean, triple A just meant a big studio made it.

So I’m assuming quadruple A is going to be a game from a large study thats recently been bought by a giant corporation and fucked with everything despite not knowing video games.

So yeah, that’s pretty much what AAAA means, although some end up decent

MrScottyTay, do games w What category is games like Life is Strange and Until Dawn?

They’re basically an evolution of the point and click adventure. This variation is often just called a narrative game or other similar sounding names. Searching for “games like telltale” should give you a good list.

Telltale were the ones that evolved the point and click into the form it takes now just so you know. Supermassive (until dawn) made their take on the genre feel more cinematic and more like watching a movie with choices but they’re ultimately still using the formula that telltale pioneered.

    echodot,

I’m fairly sure years ago that there was a game called alone in the dark that was very similar to this but that was long before telltale. Anything I can remember about it is that it had had fire physics and that every time you started a new level it would load up and say “last time on a loan in the dark” and then give you a tv show style rundown of what you previously done

    MrScottyTay,

That was more of a survival horror game
