Quexotic, do games w What game surprised you with their length?

DDLC. It was a free dl, and I never played anything like it, so I figured I’d see what everyone was on about. It was surprisingly short!

Dorfromantik. I had bought the award-winning board game as a gift for a relative and figured I’d try the videogame version. Please send help, I can’t stop playing. This game is so addictive, it should be classified as a dangerous narcotic. I have deliberately not installed it to my Steam Deck (which it’s verified for), because I need at least a few hours per day that I’m not playing it. In completely unrelated news, who knew birds are waking up this early?

I’ve also been playing a bit of GTA Vice City and San Andreas, not the botched remasters, but the original PC ports with mod packs (Reviced and SA Enhanced Edition Plus) that restore features from the PS2 version and overhaul them a little. I’m having a blast, unsurprisingly. These are games you can replay forever. San Andreas in particular absolutely glows (both figuratively and literally) with the restored lighting and holds up incredibly well. Since it’s been a while since I last played it, I noticed just how incredible the architecture in this game is. Weird thing to focus on, I know, but every building has the right proportions and, by PS2 standards at least, a remarkable amount of variety and detail, in large part due to the photo textures. Even most newer open world games don’t even come close, like the entire Saints Row series or the recent Mafia 1 remake (which I actually enjoyed quite a bit otherwise). It’s a huge step up from Vice City in this regard, which is however still a ton of fun. The attention to detail in SA remains impressive in every way, like how radio talk hosts will comment on story events.

I tried a bit of the classic hacking game Uplink again, with the brilliant UplinkOS mod that modernizes its UI and makes the game usable on modern display. I haven’t done many missions yet, but it’s still as enjoyable as when it was new 23 years ago. It’s remarkable how little this old Indie darling needs to set the right atmosphere: Some appropriately beepy Hollywood sound effects, a charming electronic soundtrack and just the right amount of well-written text.

Parking Garage Rally Circuit: Little retro arcade racer with a delightfully limited scope. If you like the old Sega arcade racers, this one is a well-crafted throwback and even if you don’t, it’s the perfect game to play in short bursts. The difficulty is old-school hard too - and comes with tons of filters and resolution options to make it look like it’s playing on your parents’ crappy old tube TV.

I was boycotting it before it was even in the news.

I’m late to the thread but am I understanding this correctly? The issue is gaming on a Linux or non-windows pc, right? Also, the general sentiment in this chat room is to not buy the games requiring windows, right?

Are you all high or just idiots? What cinpany is going to give a flying fuck if 1% of their customer base stops buying. 100% of all Linux gamers would have to commit to even make the 1% dent. 🤣🤣🤣

derpgon,

Not, the problem is that kernel level ACs are a security and privacy risk, a violation of what I do and what I am willing to share, and a bullshit way to enforce fair play. They already suck at detecting cheats, it is a cat and mouse game, and the mouse has always been ahead.

Next thing is they will require for me to stream my face, hands, and feet to ensure I am not cheating…

@GhiLA@sh.itjust.works avatar

I wasn’t buying their games because they suck.

Anti-cheat was way down the list of reasons. It’s not like even on Linux that there’s a drought of games to play.

I guess they just can’t handle Team Fortress 2.

oatscoop, (edited )

You mean like the “multi-million units sold” Linux based Steam Deck?

Railcar8095,

“Spy on me harder Daddy”

JTskulk,

No, you’re not understanding it correctly. The issue is that kernel-level DRM is a terrible thing on Windows, the fact that it doesn’t work on Linux is also a side effect.

A bit more World of Warcraft. I got most of the anniversary items I want, now I’ll do some more achievements.

Then I started Windblown, the next game from the Dead Cells devs. I guess it’s coop, isometric Dead Cells. It’s very fun, but I feel harder than Dead Cells. I finished my first run today, and the end was pretty nerve wracking. As for the coop part, that seems pretty dead right now. The game’s in Early Access, so that doesn’t help, but I only ever a saw a single open lobby. I might check it out a bit more, now that I have won once.

Then I was about to re-play Disco Elysium, but got sick again, and was in no mood for any story games (which I why I started Windblown). Maybe this week, maybe next, but definitely this year.

Also, pretty good timing with me re-playing FF7R last week, since Rebirth is coming to PC end of January. I’m really looking forward to it.

likely only way this is going to change is if someone starts exploiting the kernel level anticheats and causes noticeable consequences for people who dont care they have it installed. In essence, its just (hopefully) difficult to use rootkit waiting to be used anyway.

Donut county and Untitled goose game. Neither is that long (DC is particularly short), but both were super funny and enjoyable.

Drag picked up Helldivers recently, which uses a KLA. Drag’s had no problems with it. But drag’s dragon also downloaded it, and it completely borked its computer. The voltage regulator chip for the CPU failed, and its computer started crashing on completely different games, even after uninstalling Helldivers.

    Drag uses person-independent pronouns, which are conjugated and inflected the same way in all grammatical persons. When drag uses drag’s pronouns, they’re first person. And to answer your question, drag has a pet dragon. We’re engaged to be married. It’s @HonouraryDragon

  • dragonfucker,

    Thanks. A lot of people lived through the “singular they” controversy, where conjugation was a big issue, yet they never fully understood the conclusion that conjugation in English depends on the pronoun, not on the inflection. Latin has different rules, of course, but we’re not speaking Latin. A lot of people are still upset about that fact after all these centuries. They’re usually the kind of people who think the Romans were the good guys, and the Goths who spoke a precursor to English were evil. Fun fact: Adolf Hitler hated Gothic script. He called it “Jewish letters”. It’s funny how Germany changed sides over the whole issue. One minute Germany is sacking Rome, and the next they’re the home of the Holy Roman Empire. The whole “Third Reich” thing was an attempt at claiming a lineage descended from Rome. And of course England and the US spent a long time establishing themselves as the inheritors of Rome too. That’s probably why there’s so many old people who want English to be Latin.

    @VanillerGoriller@sh.itjust.works avatar

    Third reich was not calling back to Rome but to the German empire that was dissolved after WWI

    dragonfucker,

    What does the “First Reich” refer to?

    I have been an avid gamer since Atari 2600 and IBM PCjr, I have played RPG, shoot-em ups, arcades, stories and FPS.

    I had no idea what it was and how to play it, but I opened up my, on sale, US$7.50, new game from a small developer I'd read about named Concerned Ape. Stardew Valley. I have only been playing for 2 years and have 6 different setups i keep going back to for tweaking, and have just started a 7th. The gameplay is straightforward, and oddly addictive. I just added up the hours played on all the games, comes to 1200 hours. Don't know if this fits your bill, but I have been surprised that it is my go to even with the AAA games like Zelda taking a back seat.

    rtc, (edited )

    It could. I’ve been aware of it for some time. This description sounds good though, I’ll probably want to start playing this sometime.

    A great auto-battler released just this year named The Gnorp Apologue!

    Your role is relatively passive, but a little time investment is required for progress.

    Available on PC, Steam (if you’re willing to pay), and android (through F-droid, not sure about play store or any of the others):

    Shattered Pixel Dungeon. Run though randomly generated dungeon floors. Every 5th floor, fight a boss. I suck at it, so I’ve only gotten past the 2nd boss once, but that’s because I suck. Currently 5 different classes with a 6th in development (unless I’m wrong and it’s already out), each playing differently for the most part. You’ve got a warrior, rogue, huntress, mage, and duelist, with all but warrior being locked until you do easy enough requirements to unlock them for subsequent runs.

    Can pause, exit, and come back to a run whenever during a run.

    Available on PC and android (both F-droid and play store);

    SuperTuxKart. Cart racer with a lot of fan made content like maps and carts. Has varying difficulties, but the lower the difficulty the lower the max speed in a race, if that matters to anyone else besides me. Not exactly full-on single-player since there is the option of online play, either against friends or random players if you find an open lobby.

    Can pause pretty much any time offline but backing out makes you have to restart a race from the beginning. Same thing applies to the multi-race cup things.
