candlebury, do gaming w The best open-source games you know
@candlebury@lemmy.world avatar

Cataclysm DDA Is THE open world zombie survival experience. So long as you like obtuse roguelikes with nearly no graphics.

Although Im obviously biased what with being a dev and all.

polygon, do gaming w Whats a game that everybody seems to love that you cant stand for one reason or another?

I’ll probably get roasted for this but… Pokemon. It just seems like endless copy/paste and might be one of the laziest game franchises I’ve ever seen. I’ve really tried to get into them. I was there when the Pokemon cartoon started, I saw it rise to the phenomenon it is today, but damn if it isn’t the most boring grindfest ever.

42triangles, do gaming w [Possible spoilers] For those who played Outer Wilds, what was your favourite part of the game or your most "Ha-Ha!" discovery ?

I think the best moment for me was probably

spoiler for the base gameThe sun station. After way too much time figuring out how to get there, the music, and the story stuff to read there? Such a good moment.

strudel6242,

spoilerIt’s a shocking revelation when you discover the sun station doesn’t even do anything, when up to that point you might think to yourself that it’s the sun station that causes the supernova.

StrahdVonZarovich, do gaming w Modern Pokemon games hold your hand too much.
@StrahdVonZarovich@beehaw.org avatar

When I was a kid I was super into pokemon. I loved playing the games and they stood out to me for one reason: they were challenging. My first game was Black, and I got stuck on the first gym leader for a few days, but when I figured it out it was immensely satisfying. I would hit roadblock, I would struggle, and eventually I overcame it. Then my friend introduced me to Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and it got even harder. I honestly think that the final dungeon of Explorers of Time made me smarter or something. It forced my dumbass child brain to think outside the box and find solutions on my own.

Then Pokemon X and Y released, and it was the most stupidly easy game ive ever played. And it kept getting easier after that. Add onto that the worsening quality and I stopped caring about Pokemon. My friend who is really into Pokemon hasnt bought a new game in years, he only plays Romhacks or replays the old games.

RedditRefugeeTom, do gaming w Comfort games?

Anyone of my simulation/management games. Whether it’s running a hospital, creating an auto manufacturing assembly line or helping some brave adventurers find oxygen I’m always more at peace with a single player goal driven experience.

SanityFM, do gaming w What are some of your favorite game mechanics?
@SanityFM@lemmy.world avatar

Double jumping. Something about double jumping just always feels really liberating. It’s such a strange concept as well, with no analogue in the real world.

I haven’t seen anyone mentioning this gem:

Vampire Survivors

UnderlyingLogic, do gaming w Comfort games?

Stardew Valley is amazing for this. Minecraft was it for years and years, but Stardew is just like a nice hug. I adore it.

Hogwarts Legacy has also fallen into this category for me now.

ZephyrsAir, do gaming w What are some of your favorite game mechanics?

Any good movement mechanics. Shoutout to grappling hooks!

setsneedtofeed, do gaming w How are you feeling right now (gaming-wise)?
@setsneedtofeed@beehaw.org avatar

I’m kind of in a spur of playing or replaying older games. Replayed Fallout 1 recently and I’m doing a low intelligence build for the first time ever.

Debating playing VTM Bloodlines or the original Deus Ex, because this is a sin- I’ve never played either.

I would like to hear how your low int build goes! I have heard that it will lock you out of most quests.

setsneedtofeed,
@setsneedtofeed@beehaw.org avatar

So far I am locked out of the Killian/Gizmo quest because both characters think I’m too dumb and dismiss me.

And big problem: I’m too stupid to use a slot machine. I had planned on using gambling as my money maker so this is a problem. Even with Mentats I’m still too dumb to gamble.

hamborgr, do gaming w Setting up a Minecraft server for minimal data collection?

Your best option to avoid unnecessary data collection is to just use a FOSS server. Paper (Github) is a pretty good one imo. It’s also super lightweight and has some really good performance tweaks.

Hadriscus, do gaming w Do you prefer Performance mode or Quality mode?

I remember when I legally pirated Oblivion back in 2006 or 7. I was trying to run it on a geforce 6800 in 1280*1024 and the poor thing just couldn’t take it. With everything off it fared better, sure, but the landscape was barren like a golf course. With everything maxed out I topped at 4 or 5fps, and it looked so good that I just pushed through it. I must have played hours at that framerate.

Legally pirated

That’s called “privateering.” 🤣

Diplomjodler3, do games w For people who want to play their favorite games but are unable to, what are you currently doing?
@Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world avatar

You could try to get a used Steam Deck. That will let you play most current AAA games and plenty of indie or older titles for not a lot of money. Apart from that, I wish you all the best and I hope things get better for you.

ProvableGecko, do games w For people who want to play their favorite games but are unable to, what are you currently doing?

You could get monthly subscriptions for services like Geforce Now or Xbox Cloud Gaming. With a decent internet connection and a controller, pretty much any device that can display video becomes a gaming device. Obviously this may work out to be more expensive in the long run and these services have some weird terms of service so a decent research before subscribing is required but if you need to game for a month with minimal upfront investment they are pretty good.

Blackmist, do gaming w Do you prefer Performance mode or Quality mode?

Performance, but Death Stranding 2 looks weird (really washed out) in that so I left it on quality. It’s not a fast paced game, so I’m ok with that.
