Sword of the Sea!

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to play much because there’s a spot in what I would call chapter 2 where the game kept crashing and dying. I tried so many things to make it work and nothing came of it.

Finally , last ditch effort, went through the process of upgrading from Mint 21.2 to Mint 22. And now it seems to be working! Yahoo!

Buuuut now I’m going somewhere this weekend and I won’t be able to play, lol. C’est la vie

Dremor,
@Dremor@lemmy.world avatar

Same here, but the performances are abysmal on the Deck (15-20 fps on low), and crashes on every map changes. I’m gonna wait next week to see if it goes better with the first few fixes, and then I’ll chose if I refund it or not.

Killing Floor (2009)

Proof that you don’t need good graphics for a good game. It’s gameplay still holds up after all this time and I’ve been diggin its wave based combat again lately.

I’ll throw in a recommendation for PlateUp!

Great little coop game like overcooked but has you run the entire restaurant.

Base game supports 4 players but is easy to add mods to support more

Simyon, do games w Game recommendations

I can personally recommend Duck Game. It supports 8 player local play.

It’s a fighting game that plays on a single screen. Quite fast paced and not everyone’s kind of game but so far in my experience it’s been fun whenever guests come.

Artisian, do games w Resonite VR: Massive performance update
@Artisian@lemmy.world avatar

I’ll add that Overte VR is the FOSS competitor. It also runs quite well, though is not quite feature competitive afaik.

Both are great but I'm more sticking with Resonite but visiting Overte from time to time.

Artisian,
@Artisian@lemmy.world avatar

Very similar for me. I suspect Overte will feel better for me when I setup hosting my own avatar, world, etc.

Want been able to get avatar setup on Overte.

So far as I know, there aren’t a lot of 8-player local multiplayer games. The only obvious answer is the Jackbox games, using your phones as controllers.

Beyond that, I did find this Steam curator, who seems to specialize in 8-player games. From thier list, I recognize Gang Beasts, and Pico Park: Classic Edition. Party Golf, Screen Cheat, and Cobalt also all looked interesting, but I’ve never seen anyone play them.

Asetru, do games w Game recommendations

8 players is tough… We play quite some couch cooperative games, so here’s some recommendations. None of them except a single party game for 8 at once though, I’m afraid.

  • overcooked was already recommended. I second that. It’s great. But man, it’s intense, too… You can only play this with people who can laugh at themselves. I’ve heard purple say that this game might jeopardise friendships and I get it.
  • lovers in a dangerous spacetime is a game I’m madly in love with. It’s a coop roguelike which mixes space and lasers (which worked well for some of our kids) with pink rainbow unicorn aesthetics (which worked well for the other kids) and is just all around great fun to play.
  • boomerang fu was already recommended. I like the design and the the music has some real bangers, but it’s a competitive game which might lead to some conflict, depending on your group dynamics.
  • unrailed cost us quite some hours as well. We really liked it, but imho it gets quite tough quite fast - we rarely got to the third of iirc ten biomes. Maybe it’s because we always play it with our kids. Maybe we just suck at it. Despite this issue, we sunk quite some hours into it because it just still works well.
  • Trine is three players coop only… It’s a platformer. I didn’t like the design so much, but my kids love it, so I guess that’s still a good verdict.
  • pixel cup soccer is our go-to soccer game. It’s obviously a simple arcade game, but it’s fun.
  • Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed is our Not-Mario-Kart Kartracer and it works well. Not a fan of the tanks in there for a kid’s game though.
  • the Jack’s party box games or whatever they’re called are a kind of mixed bag, but drawful is great fun. It’s also the only game on this list for 8 players. You draw stuff on a phone or a tablet and there’s a well-working mechanic to make people guess what was drawn.
  • while I haven’t played it yet (waiting for a deal), Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is supposedly a great take on classic streets of rage style beat em ups.
  • Rayman: Origins is a beautifully made and well designed platformer that can be played cooperatively with up to four people. True classic imho.
  • for a quick party session, our kids love ultimate chicken horse where you build a level and then race through it. Tbh, for me it didn’t really provide too much replayability, but hey, if the kids like it, who am I to judge?
altphoto,

Wow, these were really nice recommendations! Thanks!

I have tried to like Minecraft many times, just can’t get into it. Still, sometimes play with my kid, if he doesn’t have anything else to play.

Congratulations on 400!

There are many playstyles for Minecraft so maybe you didn’t find one that you like.

There is PvP, creative building(sculpting), redstone or mod the hell out of it.

I think most players build a dirthut once a year and it’s enough for them.

slimerancher,
@slimerancher@lemmy.world avatar

Interesting. Maybe I can take a look at some options.

Oh yeah, not saying it’s not a good game, just that I couldn’t get into it. My kid loves it, probably has hundred plus hours in it.

Lemminary, do games w Day 399 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playing

The creativity in that game is insane. It’s the game that made me realize how incredibly talented the people at Nintendo are, and what a game could be. One of my favorites.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I’d argue it’s up there as a contender for one of the best Nintendo Games. They have a large catalog to pick from though. I’d even argue most of the 3D Mario’s are a solid choice

I had Galaxy 1 and 2, the music is to die for. Both soundtracks are amazing. Beat them both!

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I keep a playlist of video game music to listen too while i work, and it’s soundtrack is on there for a decent chunk of the playlist. It’s so good.

victorz,

Yeah, I downloaded all those OSTs from YouTube to keep on disk and play via Spotify.

Also they’re available in Nintendo’s music app for on-the-go listening. 😁

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I ripped all of them i could and put them on a Jellyfin server for listening. It really is nice, i also keep them burnt to CDs though just as back up because for some reason where i live still doesn’t have constant coverage

Visstix, do games w Day 398 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playing

I enjoyed it but got bored of it pretty quickly. I was expecting a bit more from the open world, it really doesn’t add much. So the singleplayer experience is quite short. And it’s gonna take years before there will be enough friends that own a switch 2 to actually enjoy it like you’re supposed to. If ever.

It’s fun for try-hards online though I guess.

aeronmelon,

got bored of it pretty quickly.

This is why I’m waiting for the AMOLED Switch 2 or whatever the .5 console is. By then, all the evergreen games like Mario Kart World will be totally fleshed out. I bought a Switch after Mario Kart 8 had all the DLC and updates.

Visstix,

Yeah it feels like an early access game content wise. So definitely wait. I honestly bought it so I could stream it to friends who don’t have to buy it then lol.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I can see how someone else night gets bored quickly. Very much a lot of the fun I was having i manufactured myself such as the Photo Mode (or I played split screen with family and friends)

Visstix,

Oh yeah it’s fun with friends obviously. I just wished it had more singleplayer stuff. You can only earn so many stickers to still be excited about it.

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

The lack of single player stuff really is one of the most disappointing things about it. I feel like there’s a whole bunch of stuff they could have done. Like some sort of street race system to unlock characters. It would have certainly beaten having most of the notables ones unlocked from the get go

Artisian, do games w Lies of p has been really good!
@Artisian@lemmy.world avatar

I am so excited to return to it and enjoy the DLC. It was a very satisfying base game.

Linearity hurts it a little bit, but I love the setting and mechanics. Feels really good, and in a different way than many fromsoft titles (at least how I played them). Worldbuilding worked for me, I wanted to spend more time with lore videos than I could find.

I hope it does well and we can see more entries in the series/universe.

(Standard souls warning: I don’t think this is a good first-entry into the souls games. I’m currently recommending “another crabs treasure” for that, and please go right for the accessability menu without shame.)

rainwall,

Have to give lies of P lots of credit for adding "adjust anytime" difficulty settings. Most souls-likes wont budge here with difficulty settings at all, likely due to the rabid fan pushback, but this was a huge plus to me.

As someone who dislikes the punishing "fail for 3hrs over and over again" genre mechanics but likes everything else about the game, it went from a "no thanks" to "buyable" with that change.

Artisian,
@Artisian@lemmy.world avatar

Oh this I did not know! New with the DLC it seems?

rainwall,

It was a free update that came out at the same time as the DLC, but yup they lined right up.

tiz,

Yup, yup and yuuup. I can vouch this:

Feels really good, and in a different way than many fromsoft titles
