hogart, do gaming w hello! looking to buy sub 1K laptop, general suggestions?
@hogart@feddit.nu avatar

Small tips: Look at the gpu. Also make sure the laptop have unused slots for ram so you can upgrade down the road if needed. Placement of fans/airflow matters.

lord___vader,

So far all models I consider is good enough, my concern is how to avoid ripoff and find good deals

I usually look at price history on anything I buy and see where the one I’m interested in place among those. What’s the lowest ever price, etc. You can research this a lot. Eventually you will get a feeling what’s good and what’s not. Black Friday coming up as well. Never a bad idea to see what happens. Only rarely do prices raise after compared to before.

For me, one of the worst experiences is realizing a game I really want to play only supports uninverted

FYI, the steam deck allows you to customize all that shit even if the game doesn’t support what you want.

Never happens to me, but is that like if a game you’d override outside the game and play inverted it’d be fine 90% of the time but then it doesn’t make any sense in some menus or maybe the map or whatever?

    You have a few options.
On the deck, just use the joystick for one and the trackpad for the other.
Or use either mode shifting or action layers (I never remember which is which) so that behavior changes when you hold another button.
Think kinda like tab vs alt tab, but with like… anything on the controller. Want the joystick the behave differently when holding the left trigger or whatever?

cyanarchy, do games w Do you prefer inverted or uninverted camera, and what are your experiences with it in general?

You’re the first person on earth I’ve ever heard of to invert the X axis, I can’t even think of a game that let’s you do that.

I’m pretty boring, I like my sticks neat unless I’m flying an aircraft, then I need vertical invert.

Now tank control schemes I could argue about for a while, what numbskull wants to drive in the exact direction they’re firing?

kryptonianCodeMonkey, (edited ) do games w I would like to enjoy Zelda BOTW but …

As others said, the game is all about exploration and overcoming the environment as much as it is about hacking and slashing monsters. The weapons break, but they are plentiful and there is a wide variety to try put anyway with different strengths and properties. It encourages you to explore more (both to find cool weapons and to grow your storage capacity), use different types of attacks and prioritize weapons for different types of enemies. But, if all else fails, even a stick off a tree can be used in a pinch. And there are environmental weapons and sheikh slate utilities that never run out.

The dialog with characters is often helpful for learning some of the mechanics. If you are required to do something, guaranteed there is some character, book, or dungeon to teach you how to do it early on. On the plateau, the old man is your guy. Talk to him for tips. Even better for those who enjoy exploration, though, there are usually multiple ways to overcome the same challenges and they let you discover some of those on your own instead of hand holding.

If you want a helpful tip on this specific problem, read on. If not, stop here.

The cold environment will make you freeze to death, but there are multiple ways to overcome this. Warm clothes. Campfires. Even eating spicy food. There are even some fun more subtle ways I’ll let you discover for yourself. You can also always just say “screw it” and just run in naked if you want and keep pounding apples to refill your hearts if that’s your jam. But the simplest way to handle the cold on the mountain at the start is to get a torch and light it on fire at a campfire (you can find a fire where you first saw the old man coming down from the shrine of resurrection, or in bokoblin camps, if you dont yet know how to make one yourself). Unlike other weapons that catch fire, a torch will never burn up or go out until you stow it away. 'Cause it’s a torch. That’s what torches do. The mechanics of the game often hold up to common sense like that. So just carry a lit torch and it’s heat will keep you warm enough to get to the top. Just don’t stow it until you’re back at the bottom. Job done.

The weapons breaking and stuff is whatever, eventually you just tune it out. They shower you with new stuff constantly, so the idea is to use a little of everything. No comment on whether that’s a good or bad thing, it’s probably the most divisive part of the game. Just is what it is.

You do get permanent loot in the form of clothing (which can have interesting special properties) and powers and such

Really wish they’d exempted the Master Sword from the durability mechanic, especially given how much effort it takes before you can even get it (I think it’s something like ~80/120 shrines or else it kills you?) and how not OP it is in actual practice.

    Carnelian,

Well, it kind of is, but in a roundabout way.

It doubles in strength and I think is unbreakable inside the final dungeon and possibly against guardians as well. Can tell for sure because it starts glowing

bananahammock, do games w I would like to enjoy Zelda BOTW but …

Not sure if this helps you, but there are some really good mods that reduce or eliminate some of the irritating gimmicks in the game. I played with a double weapon durability mod that makes the game feel way better.

dan1101, do games w Do you prefer inverted or uninverted camera, and what are your experiences with it in general?

Inverted Y, I played a lot of flight sims like Wing Commander and Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe in my youth. I can’t play with normal Y, it constantly messes me up.

atlasraven31, do games w Do you prefer inverted or uninverted camera, and what are your experiences with it in general?

I prefer inverted too. It feels more natural to me. Just like a bike, I can’t do the opposite with much success.

Elderos, (edited ) do games w Do you prefer inverted or uninverted camera, and what are your experiences with it in general?

Normal feels like I am controlling the vision frustum (where I want to look at), and inverted feels like I am moving the camera itself, as if it was a physical object. I can play both but I definitely have to remind myself what I am trying to control when making the switch.

I vastly prefer non-inverted, because I like the idea of just pointing where I want to look at. I hope it makes sense. All of this apply mostly for games with orbit camera.

I’ll give the console version a go. I just wished the console version supported the keyboard & mouse. The Windows version supports the keyboard and mouse, but the Windows version has a binding arbitration clause in its EULA that is not present in the console version, so I won’t buy the Windows version.

    Stillhart,

This is the funnies thing I’ve read all week. Thanks!

Iusedtobeanadventurer, do games w Weekly what have you been playing discussion - week of September, 18, 2023

I’ve been playing Prey. Just finished replaying Dishonored a few weeks ago, which led to playing dishonored 2 and death of the outsider. So, I was feeling a stealth sim and decided that after several years of owning the game I should give it a shot. It’s been fun so far.

No! Didn’t even know about it even though I’ve been gaming since 85

    CorrodedCranium,
    @CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

It’s interesting. It’s more of a linear adventure game that doesn’t really give you a ton of wiggle room but it’s got a pretty unique story that combines well with some gameplay mechanics. I also really liked the visuals.

Ashtear, do gaming w I am so pumped for Phantom Liberty and Cyberpunk 2077 v2.0!

I first played Cyberpunk after 1.3 came out so I never had that early bad experience so many did (I only ran into one major bug, blocking progression in one sidequest). It was also my first introduction to anything in the Cyberpunk setting so I didn’t know what to expect, but I quickly fell in love with it. Even without Phantom Liberty, I’m sure I still have a half dozen major sidequests on top of the nomad origin story that I haven’t done yet.

I’m pumped for this, especially after being a bit disappointed in Starfield. I’m ready for graphics that pop again, the amazing facial animations, the fluid combat, and more Cherami Leigh. Hell, I’m ready to hear the character creator music again, lol.
