commiunism, do gaming w Games designed to be one thing, but are commonly played other than intended?

After beating Deus Ex 1, there was a time where me and some friends would install a coop mod and instead of playing through the game normally, we’d pick a map, clear it and play proper hide and seek.

It was really fun since you could easily hide under objects like tables, the lighting system let you essentially become invisible in shadows, the maps had a fuck ton of all kinds of nooks and crannies meaning plenty of unexpected hiding spots, etc.

Luffy879, do gaming w Thought's on this month's Humble?

Atomic heart looks good, but it is just not enjoyable

System shock Remake is really good, its mostly just QoL changed, but again, you can get it for like 3€

Hotel renovator sim is just another one of these slop games

Otherwise I dont know anything else

MarcomachtKuchen,

That’s part of the charm

AceFuzzLord, do games w Is it me or does it seem like review bombing on Steam has become so much worse recently?

I have not seem this happening because I don’t check reviews when 99% of the time the reviews are spammed with people giving the most useless review that tells you absolutely nothing and tries to be funny but falls flat immediately after posting or a bot wrote it and it’s the most factually inaccurate piece of shit you’ll ever hear.

I honestly wouldn’t be too opposed to Steam making reviews possible only after refund policy to prevent abuse. Really try and keep the trolls away and bots away, at least from paid games.

@Novamdomum@fedia.io avatar

Absolutely. Also, I'd love to make it a rule that you can't start a review with:

"I really wanted to like this game but..."

Aww... Did you pumpkin? Are you SO disappointed that you don't get to like a thing you wanted to like? That must be so rough for you.
Anyone using that opener is immediately suspicious to me.

You might like Mullet MadJack too, if you like frantic shooters with a “keep killing or die” element.

Completely different style, and no customization that I know of, it’s 90’s cyberpunk anime styled. Each level you have ten seconds until your heart stops. Each kill gets you more time, and flashier kills like melee finishers get you more, as in universe you’re doing some sort of livestream death game. At the end of each short level, in roguelike fashion, you get to pick one of a few randomly selected upgrades/powerups.

Look up some footage on youtube, it’s a lot cooler in motion than words can cover. But it’s definitely one to play with mouse and keyboard so you can do twitch movements fast.

I’ll have to check it out. The art style alone sounds interesting

echodot, do games w Is it me or does it seem like review bombing on Steam has become so much worse recently?

I don’t even really read the reviews I just look at the aggregate score and if it’s overwhelmingly positive I just assume it’s fine.

I probably go and check the reviews only if it said mixed or negative.

Devs listening to their discord

Strider,

Devs listening too much is as bad or even worse than not listening.

Fiivemacs,

I personally like playing the developers games, not the communitys games. when I want to play the community’s version of the game, I get mods.

aeronmelon,

Yeah. It’s one thing if the fanbase comes together demanding a change with an actual rationale, but it’s another if it’s just popular influencers inciting a pitchfork riot against the devs and rate-bombing an otherwise good game.

I ran into this long ago in Ultima Online and Everquest days. "Balance" does not mean "even", guys. Sometimes a overpowering thing needs to be overpowering, and "balance" it in some other way. The term "nerfing" was created in UO for this very act of devs bending to the will of whiners instead of reexamining the game dynamics (if any change was needed at all).

Fascinating visuals.

Did the demo entice you to get the game once it releases?

MyNameIsAtticus,
@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I’m considering it. Ultimately it depends on the price, because I did have a good time with it. As long as it’s not too pricey I think I will

I love how scary the tanks are in Hell Let Loose because most classes cannot really do anything against them and since they’re usually manned by 3 people, they almost always spot you when they’re facing your direction. Its great

Any combined arms milsim game, really. Squad, HLL, Arma Reforger

Star Wars Squadrons is pretty good fun.

This was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the Tie Fighter mention. Though OP mentioned not having a joystick and I don’t have direct experience playing on controller so YYMV.

The single player campaign is short but fun and very nostalgic for enjoyers of the X-Wing/Tie Fighter era of games!

The online (if anyone even still plays) is anything but casual so I don’t necessarily recommend that unless you are super invested in it.

Acamon, (edited )

That looks fun! I am a sucker for games set in classic SW.

MarauderIIC,

Fun in VR, too

If you don’t mind a bit of a grindy ARPG aspect to it and REALLY annoying progression for traversal? Everspace 2 is probably THE best space combat in a modern release… which is sad but it is still actually really good and has some great set pieces. It is basically Freelancer 2, if that helps. If you just want shooty shooty boom boom then the original Everspace may be a better fit but… there is a reason so many of us slept on 2 after trying to like 1.

If you want something that is basically a love letter to Privateer? Rebel Galaxy Outlaw. I personally don’t vibe with it but I think that is because it is too close to what I expect to be using a HOTAS with (it is very much a gamepad/m+kb game) and the “vibes” of the Rebel Galaxy series are more “space redneck” than “space western”.

I have yet to actually get around to it (just been, what, eight or nine years now?) but I hear that some of the player origins in X4 are really good for getting into combat. I sincerely doubt that because the X series has always had REALLY good combat… broken up by 10 hours of trading so you can afford repairs and the missiles you use. But worth a look.

If you don’t mind getting out of a fighter and into a corvette or even a capital ship?

I REALLY like Cosmoteer but it is pretty grindy to start with. Space Pirates and Zombies, shitty acronym aside, has much better onboarding and similar gameplay but also much less control or a sense of “this is mine”.

And it is a love it or hate it kind of pseudo-series (really more like major functionality patches sold as a sequel) but check out Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2. You control capital ships in the 40k universe and Tindalos very much understood the assignment Just understand that 40k doesn’t pretend that space combat is anything other than romanticized WW1 naval fleet combat and it really feels like you are controlling ships of the line as it were.

Acamon,

Lots of intresting things there! Just read some reviews for RGO and it sounds like my kinda thing! And I’m going to try out BGA2, because I do like the somewhat ponderous naval vibe to battles too. Thanks!

Everspace 2 is a blast(er). The combat is pretty arcadey but has some decent crafting and upgrading mechanics to it

biofaust,

Came here to say this!

I am not into crafting or upgrading at all, but the story, quests and simple but cool-looking combat kept me on it more than I am willing to admit.

Just be sure to take the second one, as the first one is a completely different type of game.

Might be old now but Freelancer?

It has a campaign but there is also free play.
