Elden Ring and Dead Cells stand out to me the most.

LucyLastic, do gaming w What games have you played in the last 365 days that stand out to you as the most memorable experiences?

That’s easy for me, the Snowrunner Year 1 expansion pack. Specifically Lake Kola and Imandra, when coaxing a heavily laden truck through the deep snow, day slides to night and the northern lights come out. A borderline spiritual experience because to get there you have to have got through things that seemed impossible.

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

Fr Snowrunner has made me appreciate getting through obstacles through constant perseverance a little better.

It also gave me more confidence to go on more off-road trails with my bike. This had negative consequences as I got almost stuck in a bog.

LucyLastic,

Well, you had an adventure!

What sort of bike do you have?

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

Surron Lightbee X. Is a zippee lil guy

LucyLastic,

Ah yes, IIRC they’re quick, light, but lack the sort of pulling power one would want in mud … kinda hard to find that outside of a full-blown motorbike!

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

I find it has more than enough power and torque than I’d ever need. The problem is there is no rear tire. It runs on two front tires so you don’t get a thick knobby tire at the back to spin you out of deep mud.

I went overboard after and bought super aggressive off-road tires for when these wear too far down 🤓

LucyLastic,

Cool, what sort of range are you getting?

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

Truly depends on how I ride it. For mostly on road travel at 60-80 km/h I’ll get about 40km range but if I drive it off-road with hills I can get about 3.5 hours of runtime and 60+km.

These are all estimates as I’ve never ridden it long enough to fully drain it from 100% to 0.

LucyLastic,

Thanks for replying - I’m always dubious of the claimed ranges on anything electric being shown on youtube!

At the moment I use a small petrol motorbike, at some point though I’ll make the switch I’m sure :-)

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

Ya these things are quite highly variable so claims will be all over the place.

They’re way more expensive but very worth it. Zero maintenance (except for brakes when I’m not using regen and tires) and just normal chain degreasing/lubing you’d do on any bike.

LucyLastic,

It is the cost that’s holding me back now, I paid €2700 for my 2021 Tango a year ago and it has an expected lifespan of about 10 years at my current rate / style of use. There are other factors, but that’s the main one … I figure it will be the last petrol bike I buy.

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

Do you have a link to the bike? I’ve never heard of it and I’m curious now haha

LucyLastic,

rieju.com/en/fun/21/247/tango-125

The marketing for it is dire, it’s basically a slow, lightweight, farm bike that can get pretty much anywhere off road, which is ideal for where I live

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

Oh whoa that’s a very interesting looking bike. Looks like a mix between dirtbike, scooter, and older Yamaha cruiser bike with that headlight. I dig it!

How fast and far can it go?

LucyLastic,

It cruises at about 80km/h and on road the range is about 300km (I get 2.5L/100km but my other half gets 2.2L/100km because she doesn’t ride as agressively).

The original version was made as a cheap farm bike for Spain, but the new facelifted version is … a cheap farm bike in a new hat, lol

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

Very cool!!! You get slightly better mileage than my car ;)

LucyLastic,

I’m guessing your car was quite a lot more expensive

PerogiBoi,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

A fair bit more haha 😂

Snowrunner for me too. I nearly gave up in frustration at the beginning though, as the trucks are near useless at getting through any mud or water. But the stunning physics and landscapes etc kept me going. Once you have your bearings and get a decent truck, the whole experience changes.

LucyLastic,

It’s interesting that different people take different things away from the game, I love the base game with small trucks - team Fleetstar!

To the moon. Man, what a roller coaster of emotions.

Oh yeah To the Moon is an absolute masterpiece. I’ve had the sequel in my steam backlog for ages. Should really replay TTM and then finally get around to playing the sequel…

Secret_Duck, do gaming w What games have you played in the last 365 days that stand out to you as the most memorable experiences?

Hades really is a banger. I cannot wait for Hades 2, my goodness.

Another perfect game for me is Outer Wilds. It’s hard to really get across the emotional impact it has on you.

Unfortunately due to the nature of the game, you can only really ever play it once. You are able to complete the game immediately, but the whole point is you discover clues as you explore that eventually build up to a point where it all clicks together, and suddenly you know what you must do.

Go in completely blind. Play on your own with your headphones on and get truly immersed. Try not to look up any guides. If you can get there on your own it’s truly satisfying.

When people say videogames are stupid I think of this game and feel sorry for what these people miss out on!

Edit: Oh mechabellum too - great shout. It’s criminal how small the player base is for such an addictive and fun game.

Blackmist,

I’ve already told my wife that if I suffer a brain injury and lose all memories, to not bother showing me pictures of our wedding day or any of that guff. I want to play The Outer Wilds again.

Although having said that she might take the opportunity to pretend she never met me.

Secret_Duck,

Hahaha, that got a good chuckle out of me

TipRing,
@TipRing@kbin.social avatar

Outer Wilds is top of my list for most profound video game experiences. I have never went from joy to thinking "Oh. Oh..." so fast in one game. Plus, the music and graphics are so well done and support the narrative themes and mood. Just a masterpiece game.

AnarchistArtificer,

I need to play Outer Wilds. I think I actually own it already, but I’ve not got round to it. You’re like the fourth person I’ve seen in this thread mention it

Mythnubb, do gaming w Modern "Arcady" Tactical Shooter

You didn’t list it, but what about Doom?

rmstyle,

Maybe I am wrong, but I wouldn’t consider Doom as a tactical shooter. But thanks for the recommendation!

GammaGames,

Doom Eternal is definitely more tactical than the 2016 remake

theangriestbird,

It is tactical in the sense that the combat arenas and enemies require you to think about what weapon you’re using and when, but all of the decision-making is “in the moment”. I think OP is looking for games that require you to think about your approach to encounters before you start them, but where the game is “arcadey” in the sense that it isn’t a full-on MilSim.

Satisfactory. Been progressing my last save for a few weeks. I’m in the last (but largest) phase. My factory took a lot longer before turning into spaghetti comparred to my previous attempts. Now it’s slowly getting complex to the point of considering going mass dissassembly and make something more pretty.

This might be a stupid question but now that you’re on Linux, why not use something like LibreOffice or Collabora?

_comfortablyAverage_,
@_comfortablyAverage_@lemmy.ml avatar

Libreoffice is the most atrociously structured piece of software I ever encountered. not only is the UI absolutely dated and god awful trash, it can fuck up microsoft office formatted documents. i possess a special hate for it since it decided to crap out on me when I REALLY positively needed it.

don’t know about collabora, will look into it

luna,

If you dislike the UI, you can turn on an MS Office-like ribbon design in the settings

HidingCat, do gaming w Pirating games you own?

Oh yea, I used to do that when games were on discs, because sometimes the discs were slightly borked, or that the DRM with the discs were really annoying.

GrindingGears,

Sometimes you can’t even get them to run right on modern computers. Pirated versions usually have some sort of way of dealing with this, whereas the originals don’t.

On the other side of the spectrum: Older games that I own on CD-ROMs are much faster to pirate, download, and install than it would be to find the CD in the attic and then hunt for the USB CD Drive ;)

I pirate Switch games that I already own on Steam because double dipping is stupid.

LastOneStanding, do gaming w Pirating games you own?

I don’t think you actually committed an act of piracy. Good for you, though. I’m still trying to figure out how to fit a 100GB game into my hard drive (SSD) without slowing my computer down. I, too, may turn to FitGirl for the answer. If my theoretical piracy isn’t piracy (because I bought the game plus DLC, just haven’t downloaded and installed) I don’t think your theoretical or alleged piracy is actual piracy, either. I have SO MANY issues with the username FitGirl, though. They could have figured out a name that wasn’t so sexist. I would have gone with SlimWare.

Evergreen5970,

As a person who isn’t too knowledgeable about the piracy scene, what’s sexist about “FitGirl”? Is there some story behind the username that makes it sexist in use? My outsider’s impression is that FitGirl is a woman who likes fitness, exercise, and releasing pirated stuff for people.

LastOneStanding,

Most people refer to FitGirl as a man. They assume FitGirl is a man or know it’s a man. I thought like you once the first time I saw repacks made by FitGirl. I was like, “Oh, cool! A woman into fitness and computer science!” I hope I was right and I hope your “outsider’s take” is right. I fear that this is not the case. Note that I fear this, I cannot confirm if FitGirl is a man or a woman myself since this person is not my next-door neighbor. I just have been around long enough to see how FitGirl is always referred to as a man. Since I’ve learned more, the idea, as far as I can tell, is that the software gets “slimmed down” and “de-bloated.” Perhaps you’ve heard the term “bloatware?” My understanding is that, if FitGirl is a man, he is referring to women who complain about bloating and he is referring to the “bloatware” that he reduces in size as a woman who has been relieved of the bloating. “Fit” here does not refer to exercise, but rather a body type which, in turn, metaphorically refers to reducing the size of “bloatware.” Anyway, that’s what I’ve been able to piece together over the years. Mind you, it’s an interpretation of mine. Who knows how far off the mark I am? Maybe someone who knows FitGirl personally can tell us more. Maybe she’s somebody’s gym buddy.

MadMenace,

Considering the incredible speed at which Fitgirl releases repacks, I’m inclined to believe it’s a team of people.

The House of Da Vinci. I got it in the Steam summer sale and needed something like The Room games. I had no idea it was so much like The Room games. I’m glad I bought it with a huge discount. It’s not worth the full price, which is the only difference I see between The House of Da Vinci and The Room. The Room is definitely worth full price on Steam and a huge value if you get it on sale. Anyway, I’m happy. I get more of The Room, but it’s in The House of Da Vinci. Great puzzle game to play clicking on stuff with your mouse and feeling relaxed.

chloyster,

Ohh nice I played that one. I agree it’s not nearly as good as the room in my opinion. Idk why exactly, but it just seemed less polished. Still worth it on discount imo though

LastOneStanding,

The “less polished” feel, I think, comes from the way sometimes the double-click doesn’t focus right depending on the angle you’re looking at objects from and also the way sliding objects don’t slide the way they’re supposed to. The sliding objects get wicked fiddly, sometimes. The camera isn’t as good as in The Room, either. The Room had all of these aspects perfectly polished, it was just easy and intuitive to interact with. The House of Da Vinci, lacking this perfection, pales in comparison. The regular price now is 19.99. It used to be twice that. I got it for 7.99. Having payed 7.99, I’m OK with the major wonky. If I had payed 19.99, I would be very unhappy. If I had payed 39.99 I would be very seriously pissed off. I have to say, though, too, that I like the addition to the looking glass, where it lets you see things in the past. I really think it adds a little more depth to the puzzle solving. Plus, you get a Renaissance bionic arm thingy. Kinda cool. This game is keeping happy. In a place where I need more of The Room and I finished all of The Room. 8 bucks well spent and I’m happy.

chloyster,

Nice! Yeah I didn’t even consider the PC price. I played all these games on my phone and I think I got house of davinci for like 99c on sale, so I think that wasn’t a bad price at all haha. I would not be super happy about paying full price yikes.

LastOneStanding,

I can’t imagine playing this game on a phone. I guess 99 cents isn’t so bad. Do you still have eyes after playing this game on a phone? LOL. I wonder if the phone version and the PC version are different. Like, on a 17" screen, I’ve had to adjust brightness to see things and then re-adjust brightness to see other things. LMAO. I could play this on a tablet, though. Totally could see things on there. With brightness adjustments available on the fly. I can totally imagine The Room being accessible perfectly on any device. That’s the “polished” you couldn’t quite put your finger on. The Room was carefully created for all devices. The House of Da Vinci is a blue light special.

chloyster,

Haha I do indeed still have eyes :)

Idk I didn’t think it was too bad. I don’t remember the screen size ever really being an issue but it’s been a while since I played

LastOneStanding,

Referring back to The Room, I had choices. I could play it on my iPhone, my iPad, or on my gaming laptop with Steam. I went with my gaming laptop on Steam. Again, I bought all of those in a sale. I was bummed because I was like, “I could have lolled around on the couch with my iPad and played this no prob instead of being weighed down with my heavy gaming laptop on my lap. Even the last installment, with the complicated creepy doll house shit and all the travel through the house and all.” The first The Room I saw as totally potentially cool on my phone, and maybe even The Room 2. After that, I don’t know. Maybe. The House of Da Vinci, as I am playing it on my computer, it really needs the screen real estate because of the camera and the wonky nonesense. I can tell that the developers originally made it for a computer because of the way you have to manipulate things. The Room is a format I can imagine on a touchscreen. The House of Da Vinci is not something I can imagine on a touchscreen. But you are living proof you can do this, on a phone. So there is something else to say about this game. It’s great on a phone. 99 cents is nice. It’s less than 7.99.

chloyster,

Yeah I totally get what you mean. Have you had a chance to play the VR room game? I really want to check it out but don’t currently have a headset

LastOneStanding,

I have not, because I don’t have a VR headset, either. VR technology is something really interesting, though, isn’t it? Right now, what I’m seeing, is a lot of few people owning VR headsets whining about how they wish old games could be VR-enabled and adjusted to be made VR. My best guess is that some console maker will make VR an integrated part of its technology (probably Nintendo) and everybody will get their VR on until they’re exhausted (like with the Wii) and then, after that, we’ll have VR that is affordable to the masses (not like what happened to the Wii, which my great-nephew used to call the “wee-wee” when he was 4).

chloyster,

Yeah I think VR is cool. I don’t think it’ll take off until they can make a headset that’s actually comfortable to wear for a long time though. I’ve tried a bunch out, and some aren’t that bad. But for prolonged periods it’s just uncomfortable usually. And it makes me not want to set it up again when I know I’ll just get sweaty and irritated after an hour

tuckerm, do gaming w Pirating games you own?

I had to torrent SWAT 4 a few years ago to get a copy of it, even though I had paid for it. I bought it on Direct2Drive back when that looked like a good option for buying games long term. When Direct2Drive was purchased by GameFly, you suddenly had to download games from the GameFly client, and not all of Direct2Drive's catalog was available there. For the games that weren't available on GameFly, it would just show you your CD key.

Today they aren't owned by GameFly anymore, but SWAT 4 still isn't downloadable, it only shows your key. I finally bought it again on GOG a couple months ago when it was like $1. I almost didn't want to do it out of principle though, haha.
