Life by You’s cancelation was a big disappointment to hear. I figured if any studio had an understanding of emergent intercharacter storytelling in the way a Sims game needed, it was Paradox.
That said, Para-Lives is still in the works and looks quite promising.
Mmhmm, Paralives looks like it’s going to take the world by storm. I’ve been following their development and they’re doing really good things.
Don’t get your hopes up. It never lasts. These small indie studios create something truly insane that’s so fun and incredible, and then big gaming studios like EA come in and ruin everything. A lot of people seem to forget that Maxis, developer of Sims and SimCity, used to be completely independent. EA bought them out and ruined the entire thing, now they basically don’t exist anymore. Who is to say that the developers of Paralives isn’t going to do the same thing? Guarantee they get a stupendous amount of money offered to them and they sell out, and they would be stupid not to. Who wouldn’t sell their franchise for tens of millions and never have to work a day in their life ever again?
Maxis made terrible decision after terrible decision. They had no money and ea bailed them out and redesigned sim city 3k to actually be possible on modern hardware, while allowing dollhouse to continue and turn in to the sims 1. Then Sims 2 and 3.
Hate on ea all you want but Maxis fucked themselves up and ea made all of the sims possible.
paralives is so slow development though, and the lack of teaser releases concerns me about the quality. I have high expectations for it as well but starting to grow concerned
I personally don’t mind them, but I personally think the best kinds of random encounters are ones like pokemon randomizers where you step in the grass in a modded gen 3 game with every single pokemon in existence in it and it randomly pulls from the list of 1000+ mons in order to give you a feeling of true randomness in team building. Especially since you aren’t able to predict which creatures you will get.
Having a random table containing only a few different encounters isn’t anywhere near as fun and exciting as randomly having gods spawn as your enemy as a beginner in a randomized game followed by the weakest creatures in the game a moment later.

Also ended up downloading Frogatto recently because I’ve heard some good things about it and so far a couple levels in it’s fun enough. Not fun enough that I’d be giving it glowing reviews across the board, but fun enough to play on occasion.
Slowly playing through Trails of Cold Steel, which is finally starting to pick up after chapter 4 (the characters are still pretty dull and I’m not a huge fan of the orbment changes).
Played a bit of Tales of Vesperia which I’m enjoying more than expected, but got distracted and mostly played Dragon’s Dogma which is really fun but a bit confusing on where I’m supposed to go (and when).
I also got Triangle Strategy, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ys Memories of Celceta and Ys Oath in Felghana which were all on sale, but haven’t started any yet.
I don’t hate them, and actually think they improve dungeon crawlers like Etrian Odyssey.
But for other games I think they slow down the pacing too much, especially when you want to get back to an older area, as you are going to fight lower level enemies and there’s usually an unavoidable scene transition which takes time.
Old Mother/Earthbound games would just let you insta-win battles if you were way stronger than the area you happened to be in. Made backtracking much smoother.
Wizardry 7 comes to my mind. My party has been resting for days, trying to recover hp and sp from the last random encounter. And now as I’m jumped and half obliterated again because not everyone in the party woke up immediately to being attacked, it’s time to rest for another week.
I picked up and finished Nodebuster this week. It’s a pretty chilled out incremental improvement style game that almost becomes idle closer to the end.
I’ve also been trying to get some games of Spectre Divide (new f2p tactical FPS game) in this week too.
Origins. Bayek is easily the most relatable and grounded character, and the story does a great job of setting up the origins of the Assassins. My only gripe is that Aya really needed more development and a game of her own.
