A self-perpetuating meme where the objective is to forget you're playing it. By remembering it, you have lost the game, and by custom, must announce it aloud.

Rhynoplaz,

I lost.

Age of Empires 2 is awesome.

Also try 0ad for the people who like age of empires games. It's free and open source.

Co-Optimus is a great resource for this.

Here’s their database with a filter showing all PC games that support LAN play:

This list is the way to go. My last Lan party was about 17 years back but there is one golden rule, which is still more important than anything else: pick a game no one has played or one that everybody is familiar with! The biggest fun killers are unbalanced teams and matches. Despite that, we liked the first flat out game which now should be wreckfest and strangely enough a soccer mod for CS:S back then.

Most unrelated thread of the month!

So I'm playing games like age of empires. But also open source alternatives like 0ad using lan. Works great!

I'm talking the old school age of empires and age of mythology games btw.

Next, there are also good need for speed games like need for speed 3 hot pursuit from 1998. Which works very well via lan.

Maybe red alert also works, or open source alternatives like OpenRA. And then we have games like Planetary annihilation, which also have lan feature.

90% of 40 player raids are absolute nightmares. This is not right.

corvi,

But imagine if you grew up with and struggled alongside those 40 plays for your whole life.

teft,
@teft@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed. The sweet spot was ten man raids. You know everyone is pulling their weight. With 40 half the raid was slacking since those bosses didn’t need a lot of coordination.

Soulg,

I think the 20man mythic is the perfect place when you add in game balance considerations.

15 player original UBRS was where it was at

Zizzy,

I agree, 10 was the most fun I ever had raiding in WoW by a long shot for a multitude of reasons.

lightnsfw,

That’s the maximum, not the amount that usually works. My car can go 120mph in the right conditions. Doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.

Zizzy,

Fair, but I think the analogy is closer to saying like “a car can go 120mph.” But also my reply was a bit tongue-in-cheek as evidenced by the fact that I pulled the 90% number out of nothing more than my anecdotal feeling.

But if we are going to take this post seriously, I find it highly suspect as WoW never even had any serious content where more than 40 players are acting simultaneously. And if the limit is 50, they would have had to have data even higher than that. Im not sure how they could collect such data when you would only have 40 players you put in a raid. Maybe for things where multiple raids try to work together? But then youre putting two groups that dont normally play together and comparing them to one that has been hand selected to be cohesive. Doesnt really make sense.

Flames5123,

FFXIV added 24 player hard raids called “chaotic raids” that’s absolutely a nightmare. They have a few 48 player raids that are more midcore content that works well, but 24 is super common and works well for other casual content. But most midcore/hardcore raids are 8 player, and that feels like a good spot.

Zizzy,

Yeah I did the 8man raids, loved them. Kind of miss doing them

Flames5123,

7.2 comes out in a week. New 8 player raids are dropping and people will be doing them and the savage versions for the next 3-4 months! Come on back!

Planetary Annihilation, Warcraft 3 (at least pre-reforged if you can get a hold of an old copy), Unreal Tournament, Killing Floor, Battle for Middle Earth (1 & 2), OpenTTD, Simutrans, Settlers: Heritage of Kings, some of the older Wolfenstien games, Battle for Wesnoth, Warzone 2100, Teeworlds, Widelands

I’m disappointed the option isn’t harsh enough because sometimes you need to tell people to fuck off. Or it’s no (yes) situation.

Anything with a server software you can host can be played on LAN (okay probably not some things because they’re being weird but in general this is true).

That means counter strike, Minecraft, supertuxkart, xonotic, enshrouded, pal world, etc

The villain from FC3 is the best one in any game to date for me, he’s so well written and voice acted!

My only gripe with the game is that it likes to get you high every so often and those sequences (except the ones closer to the ending) feel like a shore

nyctre,

Michael Mando aka Nacho Varga from better call Saul. Guy needs to be in more stuff. He’s fun to watch for sure.

XeroxCool,

This was his breakout and now everyone expects his fake accent! But definitely Chek out his little live action FC3 scene where he tortures McLovin if not already seen (assuming it holds up as well as I remember, being a decade later and a decade older)

XeroxCool,

FC3 was the first to make drug trips part of story progression (leaving a little leeway for FC2’s malaria bouts). FC4 had a lot of “spiritual” events. FC5 played a lot with Bliss trips. I’m wrapping up FC6 now and was just saying “man, where are all the hallucinatory story arcs?”. Then I did the Oluso mission (panther amigo) and felt at home for a minute. It didn’t last long, but I guess the reward is bringing back a little supernatural power to the game, late in the campaign.

I just got to the first High experience, it gave very Alice in Wonderland vibes. It was fun but I can see how it can get old very quickly.

It’s the kind of game where after you beat it you kind of feel empty after beating it.

Any suggestion of other games like that ?

Personally for me Silent Hill 2, Alan Wake 2, Fallout New Vegas, Assassins Creed Black Flag, and Portal 2 are the ones i can name in recent memory. I’m sure there’s more that left me feeling the same way beyond that though

BuboScandiacus,

Thank you ! I’ll probably try black flag

It’s a great game. I’m a little biased because that was my game when i was little, but it’s really solid narrative wise and gameplay wise
