I really want to play single-player versions, or at least on my own private server, games like Travian or Ikariam. Basically resource management strategies but without the insane need to be 24/7 online in anticipation of an enemy attack.

Edit: Also a single player tab targetting open world rpg.

Imagine if Rockstar did a superhero game.
With their satire style on it. Like The Boys style.
Open world, some destructive environment, a deep character creator.

laxu,

That’s basically Saints Row 4.

Everything being in a simulation killed it for me, though.

The visually glitching-out NPCs ruined the fun of being a completely unhinged maniac with/without superpowers. Which is kinda what the games are about.

And the constant black skybox became depressing fast.

SR3 does it better, imo. It constantly rides the edge of “How much is movie set? And how much is not?”

a racing game that feels like mario kart but for pc

Squids, (edited )

There’s the sonic racing series which has a few ports on PC. I haven’t played them on PC, but I’ve played them on the switch and they’re pretty Mario kart-ish both in playstyle and mascot racer charm.

Also you can play as The Heavy.

LucyLastic,

So, Tux Kart?

Edit: or more old school, Wacky Wheels (I think I still have a copy somewhere)

Ultimatenab,

In think you are looking for dash dash world on Steam.

gerryflap,

Something like Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed? It’s been quite a while, but I remember having fun with it. It felt like a Mario Kart kinda game

I want Quake, DOOM, and Hunt Showdown to have a baby.

Some kind of mad, fast paced, extraction shooter with crazy weapons in a gritty dystopia. Maybe Bungie will come close with Marathon.

Ultimatenab,

I will play the crap out of that as I love all three games mentioned.

Skadabucci, do gaming w What type of game you want to see that doesn't fully exist yet?

An RPG that utilizes LLMs to interact with NPCs in meaningful ways.

Ultimatenab,

I think that is inevitable, and we will see one in the best future.

Littleyush, do games w What games can you recommend that didn't get the appreciation that they deserved?

If you can handle dying a lot while learning the ins and outs of the world, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Anomaly is a wonderful package completely for free. Especially if you add the G.A.M.M.A. modpack to it, makes the game play significantly deeper, much harder (in some bullshit and also fair ways), but also just crazy immersive; makes you feel like the actions you take do matter, but if you were to die, you’d just be another loot bag for some other Stalker to come across

FireTower,
@FireTower@lemmy.world avatar

I haven’t played Stalker but I did finish Into the Radius which is heavily inspired by it.

Littleyush,

Oh Into The Radius made me shit myself in fear more times than I’d like to admit

Probably one of the best vr titles I’ve played. You really feel the isolation.

I feel like the person posting that in the first place was not really acting in good faith - with as highly politicized as the topic is, and with how much people genuinely care about it given the way people’s rights to just live have been so quickly taken away, posting that was basically lobbing a grenade to watch what happens. It couldn’t just be an innocuous post because by nature of what it was, it wasn’t innocuous, and there was no way to not know that. People were going to get angry and the comment section was, very predictably, both here and in the Starfield comm it was cross posted to, going to turn into a dumpster fire. It felt like, to me, that the OP had an ax to grind, and that came out in their replies to people who were upset. It was by nature an incendiary post, and got incendiary reactions.

librechad, (edited )

The recent exchange surrounding that post has raised serious concerns about the quality of discourse on this platform. Rather than engaging in reasoned debate to dissect the complexities of the issue, many participants seem to resort to inflammatory rhetoric. This unfortunate trend undermines the very purpose of a discussion forum and has led me to reconsider my continued participation here.

ugo,

It is meaningless to engage in bad faith discussions. Are you aware of the paradox of tolerance? Tolerating intolerance only serves the purposes of the intolerant, while the tolerant get pushed aside (which could mean anything from disenfranchisement to death)

Therefore, the tolerant must be intolerant towards intolerance.

There exists no good faith or tolerant argument in which removing pronouns makes sense, it is at its base a message of intolerance.

There are no complexities and no discussions to be had, you are either intolerant yourself, or naïve, if you think this is a topic that can be discussed.

librechad,

The intent of my original post was not to advocate for intolerance, but to question how moderation decisions are made, especially when there appears to be inconsistency. In doing so, I hoped to promote reasoned debate on that specific issue, not to engage in bad faith discussions.

While I understand that certain topics may be inherently fraught, the objective was to consider how platform moderation intersects with issues of free choice and community standards. That said, if the prevailing consensus is that some subjects are too divisive for productive discourse, then that too is a topic worth discussing.

CaptainEffort,

I’m kind of curious to here about Nexus’ inconsistency. As far as I can tell they’ve been pretty consistent if the mod gets their attention. There was a Spider-Man mod that removed a pride flag, and Nexus removed that too. That feels consistent to me.

Brokkr, do games w Are there any reputable independent gaming sites left?

I’m not sure about sites, but many of the old GB people have independent podcasts and streams. Check out Nextlander or The Jeff Gerstmann show. Some of their stuff goes up on YouTube as well.

YouTube is also a good place to find reviews, if you can find a few people who generally like the same stuff you do.

mana,

I’ve tried to get into their branching podcasts. The one I enjoyed the most was probably Fire Escape with Dan, Mike and Mary because they have the strongest group dynamic IMO.

I have two podcasts in my rotation currently:

  • Remap Radio; previously Waypoint Radio, sometimes their politics feel overly dogmatic, perhaps as a reflection of the audience and culture they have cultivated, but the vibes are good and they have insightful things to say. I’d say they are currently in a transition period so they’re still finding their rhythm.
  • 8-4 Play; Started by a localization company based in Tokyo, you’ll get a unique perspective of life in Japan, Japanese games, and industry connections that you can’t really get anywhere else, at least not in English.

Used to listen to the Bombcast, but none of the splinters from what it was appeal to me much. New Bombcast, Nextlander, solo Gerstmann, are all flawed in different ways imo.

mana,

I’ve listened to 8-4 Play on and off for years. I usually check back in with them when a new Monster Hunter game/expansion comes out because few other podcasters I’ve come across really cover it with any depth.

Tastyzero, do gaming w What’s one of your favorite game soundtracks?

The Dig, FFVII, Indiana Jones and the fate of atlantis, Morrowind, Quake.

Lots more, especially classic midi tracks but those are my top 5 (subject to change of mood and season).

Omegamanthethird,

Shout out to Morrowind. That opening menu BOOM, BOOM-BOOM gives me chills.

Also Final Fantasy VIII, X, XII are some of my favorites of the series. But the franchise really has a lot of top-tier music.

Gematsu is niche, but I’m 99% sure there’s nothing really shady going on there.

I’ve always thought it was weird that there hasn’t been a Hunger Games video game. Not to play out the teen movie storyline, but as the Battle Royale part.

Imagine creating a character using typical RPG elements (strength, endurance, speed, crafting, survival, etc.) with a limited number of points, the same number of points as everyone else. Then you’re placed inside different large arenas that have environmental hazards for a Battle Royale survival that could last up to 30 minutes per game if you’re good enough to make it to the end.

You have to survive against random encounters just like the gamemasters use in the books, dangerous animals, and you can get sponsorship drops like the COD kill streak rewards (healing items, tools, weapons). You could even make it through by not killing anyone if you’re good enough at surviving the environment, but you’d better hope you don’t end up in a fight.

I just think a game like that would be sick.

Squids,

It’s not a dedicated game and idk if servers even run these anymore, but the original popular “battle royal” was minecraft hunger games servers and they did kinda run like that - no stats obviously, but throwing you empty into a bounded world where you’d have to survive and craft and kill monsters and each other. I think some of them might’ve even had like your sponsor drops where you’d get potions or enchanted stuff

Miraheze is similar to how Fandom used to be, before ads entirely took over. There are no ads at all there. It is a site that uses MediaWiki so probably not many of its' sites would be news oriented (with like a single author controlling the content), but instead more wiki content for an entire community to share.
