Tapioca, do games w Charles Martinet Will No Longer Voice Mario

It’s sad. But hopefully, a chance for Nintendo take advantage of this to modernise things a bit. Wonder looks to have a bit more VO in it, and people have been speculating it’s a new actor.

tbh he has to retire sometime, and considering the reaction to the movie casting this seems a sensible way to do it.

Chris Pratt taking over as the voice of Mario from now on.

rozPierog,

He’s so cool

Ow wow wow wow

gullible, do games w Charles Martinet Will No Longer Voice Mario

Has there ever been a class action lawsuit related to whiplash? If Chris Pratt replaces Martinet everywhere, there will be.

nostalgicgamerz,

It’s not going to be Chris Pratt You fucking doughnut

gullible,

Duh, Nintendo can’t risk that level of exposure.

Feathercrown, do games w Charles Martinet Will No Longer Voice Mario

Sad to see him go, but glad I got to hear him as Mario.

SteposVenzny, do gaming w Charles Martinet is retiring as the voice of Mario

I’m ready for a new era in Mario voice acting of an Italian voice actor putting on a cartoonish American accent.

Best I can do is Chris Pratt.

mrGarbanzo,

I’m partial to Captain Lou Albano’s mario.

Honestly that’s fair. Dude’s getting old, I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect him to voice Mario forever. I’m glad they’ve got him as an ambassador though, for now at least. I’d imagine he’ll help whoever next voices Mario get it right so his voice isn’t too radically different.

EsheLynn,

It’s just a shame he’s been downgraded to what appears to be a sideshow piece. I mean, if he’s happy doing it, more power to him. He’s been Mario for, like, 20 years? Good luck to the next Mario. Those are some big overalls to fill.

MrZee,

If I recall correctly, he says it is hard on his vocal chords to do the voice. Have you read something where he says he wants to keep doing the voice acting? Or might he be happy to move to an easier role?

EsheLynn,

No, not at all. Just sad cuz nostalgia is all. Cool he wants to travel and meet fans of him and the franchise, it’s just… Again, kinda feels like a bit of a travelling sideshow attraction is all. Maybe it would be better if he retired is my point of view. It would bother me to be reduced to what feels like a circus act or county fair attraction. “Come see the Bearded Lady, after that, get Charles Martinet’s autograph!” Ya know?

Edit to add: at the same time, I do get that this is apparently Martinet and Nintendo wanting to continue to work together. Hell, maybe I should take my nostalgia glasses off. He gets to travel the world on Nintendo’s dime, and get paid to do it. Probably not too bad of a retirement I guess.

magic_lobster_party,

He started at Nintendo 1991, so more than 30 years.

crashoverride,

30, almost 30 years. You lost a decade somewhere bro

VentraSqwal, do games w Charles Martinet will be stepping back from the voice of Mario and is taking on a brand-new "Mario Ambassador" role at Nintendo

I’m curious if it’s his choice or if Nintendo wants to make it Chris Pratt everywhere lol.

Monomate,

Let’s hope not. But I think they’d prefer a dedicated voice actor to replace him, as the logistics of Chris Pratt recording his voice lines between his acting commitments would cost too much for Nintendo.

ech,

It’s certainly pretty conspicuous timing, but the guy is also almost 70, and been doing the job for over 30 years. It’d definitely make sense for him to just figure it’s time to pull back.

MimicJar,
@MimicJar@lemmy.world avatar

0% chance Chris Pratt will play Mario in the video games. He’ll do the voice for another 2 movies along with the rest of the cast and that’ll be it.

We’ll get a few spin off movies, maybe he’ll appear in those briefly but then he’ll be done.

They’ll eventually do a 4th movie but I’ll have a name like “Universe” or “Dreams” and I’ll be a new Mario cast.

crow, do gaming w Charles Martinet is retiring as the voice of Mario

Mario seems like the perfect character to replace the voice actor with an AI. He barely says anything, and often it’s what he already said before.

storksforlegs,
@storksforlegs@beehaw.org avatar

As long as they keep paying him to use his voice

Milan,

That’s an insult to Charles’ talent. The man is a professional voice actor and his sense can’t be replaced by AI. Replicated maybe, but not replaced.

greybeard,

I think the thing AI can’t do is inspired delivery of lines. Mario doesn’t say much, but the way it is said is very important. I think it would be easier to replace most characters in Final Fantasy games with AI than it would Mario.

Logster998, do games w Charles Martinet Will No Longer Voice Mario

This makes me worried, Charles they he wanted to voice Mario until he died. I’m hoping the video clears things up.

Nukken, (edited )

He is 67 now, probably just decided to slide into retirement. Or maybe he’s having a hard time even doing the Mario voice as he ages.

EverStar289,

Yeah I don’t really want to hear Chris Pratt every time I play a Mario game from now on.

fartsparkles,

Snap, unless he’s copying Charles’s iconic Mario sounds (ya-hoo), he’s entirely forgettable as a voice actor.

pastermil,

Hell, he’s even forgettable as an actor. Period.

Kalkaline,
@Kalkaline@programming.dev avatar

He was funny in Parks and Rec.

aircooledJenkins,

I like him as Starlord

quinnly,

He was wonderful in Moneyball, but then again so was everybody in that movie

fartsparkles,

Agreed, he knocked that role out of the park but other than that, he’s very generic. I don’t dislike the guy, all said (his ad-libbed lines in P&R are some of the funniest lines in the show).

vlad76,
@vlad76@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Granted, the only Mario games I’ve actually played was SMB on the NES and Odyssey, so I don’t have the same attachment to the character as some, but I still don’t get the hate Chris Pratt got for that role. The movie wasn’t anything really special, the character was fine. But people were freaking furious.

BartsBigBugBag,

Because Pratt isn’t a good voice actor. Really though, there were few standout performances in that entire movie, so he wasn’t alone in that. It’s almost like they picked the cast based on who can only play themselves, not on who would be a good choice. Princess Peach, Luigi, and Bowser were the only real solid performances in my opinion.

Bonesince1997,

And Luigi barely got screen time!

SquirtleHermit,

It had less to do with Pratt and more to do with it being a radical departure from the established voice of a very nostalgic and beloved character. It would basically be the same thing if Pratt was chosen to voice Micky Mouse or Bugs Bunny.

It’s also compounded by the fact that the Mario fan base, for good reason, loves Charles Martinet. Just see comments here for evidence. So pulling out a generic sounding Hollywood frontman felt like they were focusing on sales over source material. Which is true, but will always upset longtime fans.

I'm betting that he's recorded hundred of hours so they can keep using him for the next decade.

IWantToFuckSpez,

And then they’ve turn that into an AI voice generator.

pimento64,

In closing, you people must realize that the public owns you for life, and when you’re dead…? You’ll all be in commercials, dancing with vacuum cleaners.
