I feel like Baldur’s Gate definitely deserves it, hands down, no contest. Unfortunately I think Tears of the Kingdom will win simply because more people probably played it who never played, or would even consider playing, Baldur’s Gate because it’s not a “mainstream” big-name-company AAA release.

habanhero,

Baldur’s Gate because it’s not a “mainstream” big-name-company AAA release.

Bro why you sleeping on Alan Wake

sigmaklimgrindset,

FR, Alan Wake 2 is good, and I think it genuinely has some of the most enjoyable writing in a video game since Disco Elysium. The mix of live actors with in-engine graphics is very cool too, Remedy did great!

But people will complain about it “only” running on 4090s (I’m playing it on a 2080Ti with DLSS and RT and I am 2/3rds of the way through without any problems) or the pulpy writing (which is by design). Let’s not even get into the “woke” arguments.

iheartneopets, (edited )

I’m wondering if it might suffer because it’s also a horror title, and those tend to be more niche over all? It is very cool that we’ve got two of them in the running, though! Definitely shows how the public’s attitude toward horror is changing, imo

Edit: guys, I am not saying Alan Wake 2 does or doesn’t deserve to win lol. I am not trying to insult your favorite video game. I have no opinion either way, as I have yet to play it (plan to though! It does look good). I am just trying to be realistic on each game’s chances.

sigmaklimgrindset,

This is very true, the original Alan Wake is already a niche game due to it being in the horror genre (while RE is more action oriented), while Max Payne from the same devs is beloved. I bet a lot of gamers forgot about it before the AW2 announcement trailer.

Definitely shows how the public’s attitude toward horror is changing, imo

Maybe this’ll get Konami off their asses regarding Silent Hill, but who are we kidding.

(Also, sorry for my other reply to you earlier. I realized it was kind of snarky and deleted it. If you didn’t see it, then nvm it never happened ._.)

iheartneopets,

I would definitely agree about Alan Wake being kind of a niche/cult game, even among people who play indies. We can only hope for a (good) new Silent Hill, but Konami hasn’t been inspiring much confidence with that in the last several years - _-

Haha, that’s okay, I was wondering why I couldn’t see it when I clicked on it! I feel like a lot of us are relearning how to treat each other on the internet here on lemmy. I know I am. Idk why, but years on reddit had me trained to say just mean things to people. It was very easy to forget that there was a person on the other side of a comment/post. Idk if that’s how it is for others, but that’s definitely how it has been going for me.

iheartneopets,

I haven’t played it yet, sorry! That one might suffer from being released so close to the decision. The holidays are coming up so spending my extra fun bucks on that instead of games atm. I hope to play it soon though!

simple,

I don’t think so, now that the dust has settled lots of people agree ToTK was a bit underwhelming. It had many of the same issues as breath of the wild, like weak dungeons and bosses. The depths and sky islands also had lots of copy pasting, way more than breath of the wild ever has.

Great game still, but no way it’ll win GotY. It’ll easily win the action/adventure award though.

iheartneopets,

I agree with you on all points, but I guess I haven’t really seen the same meh attitudes towards it that you have? The Nintendo/Zelda fans have seemed largely rabid over it since it came out, and I wonder if there’s just so many of them that it will beat out the competition? Idk, I guess we’ll see in a couple weeks!

I hope you’re right, though, because how I felt at the end of playing ToTK was very different than when I started playing, largely due to the repetitive and aggravating game systems. It’s a real shame, because I loved the story (not the way it was presented via memories, but still)

Much like Elden Ring last year, BG3 is a usually-niche game that actually broke through into the mainstream on the back of its sheer quality. I imagine it stands a good chance of winning, though I wouldn’t be surprised if TotK takes it (only disappointed).

iheartneopets,

That is an excellent point! I really hope it gets it. Out of all the games, I feel like BG3 did the most to push its genre forward in a huge way. I’m excited to see how the game awards shake out

We’ve got some great contenders this year!

  • Alan Wake 2
  • Baldur’s Gate 3
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Who are you voting for (or would vote for) and why?

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

Baldur's Gate 3, because it's one of the best games I've ever played, but also I haven't played more than a few minutes of the other games on the list. Alan Wake 2 is only a storefront that doesn't support my operating system; Spider-Man 2 is stuck on a console that I don't intend to buy so I won't play it for at least two years (and even then it seems way too similar to the last games); Resident Evil 4 is surely better than the last time I played it, but I'm not in a rush to play a revised version of that game; Super Mario Bros. Wonder I can say shocks me that people are rating it this highly; and even if I wasn't pissed off at Nintendo these days, Tears of the Kingdom still didn't build on Breath of the Wild the way I wanted it to.

money_loo,

Absolutely stacked year, I don’t think I could choose!

ioslife,

Alan Wake 2, but TotK was so close. Spiderman 2 was disappointing.

kromem,

ToTK.

BG3 was amazing and is the best RPG of the year hands down. A really outstanding game that deserves all the praise and I’d certainly feel it deserved GotY if it won.

But ToTK was really just beyond expectations with its game design. The open ended puzzle design, the sheer number of “wait, I can actually do that?” The way it continued the BotW reinventing LoZ (NES) trend by reinventing LttP’s dark world…

It’s one of the toughest years I can recall, as BG3 was also beyond expectations and had incredibly nuanced design. But I feel like in a lot of ways it was still more structured by being guided by tabletop, whereas ToTK really just broke the mold all over again for Nintendo.

It might be my favorite Zelda title of all time.

Of the 3 I’ve played, it’s TotK

I bet it will be a close call between spiderman and zelda

Zelda vs BG3 IMO

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

My heart says BG3, but my head also says BG3, because if you look at Google trends, BG3 has held the conversation longer and with higher peaks. Still, the winner is realistically only one of these two games.

teawrecks,

I think realistically, TotK is going to win the popularity aspect by a longshot. Even though BG3 is, IMO an objectively more impressive feat, and most of the novelty in TotK was already in BotW.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

The awards are voted on by journalists, not fans, so the games favored to win are the ones that woo the most outlets, not the ones that sell the most copies. They're correlated, but if a staff of game reviewers is holding the game that sold a third as many copies in higher esteem, it can still win in this show.

teawrecks,

I’m just basing it off the fact that anyone can click that link and vote on which one they want to win GOTY.

@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

It's a separate tally.

As far as I’m concerned, this is the clear winner and my first 10/10 game this decade.

Totk was pretty mediocre, it’s only there because of bias

GiovaMC,

Totally agree. It should win the greatest DLC award if there was one… and even there will have some competition from Cyberpunk

RGB3x3,

It definitely wasn’t just DLC, but the new stuff wasn’t built quite right for the new powers.

What was so great about the runes in BOTW was that the world felt perfectly built to utilize them.

But when you take that same fairly flat world and try to implement more verticality, it feels tacked on and incomplete.

Oh well, maybe “BOTW” 3 will overhaul the world to fit better with the mechanics.

magic_lobster_party,

Underwhelming is a more appropriate wording. It’s a good game. It just leaves more to be desired. Especially after all these years of development.

Oh the marketing show

Why isn’t Kong or Gollum up there? The entertainment you get from all the glitches makes my day!

Sequel, sequel, sequel, remake, sequel, sequel.

darth_helmet,

Props to Bethesda for releasing an original IP, but unfortunately the game sucked

    It’s not interesting enough to be a new IP 💀

    electrogamerman,

    In what world is Mario wonderland a sequel?

    ASaxtonNamedPaxton, do games w The Game Awards announces its 2023 nominees

    I’m not quite finished with it but I’ve said “this is the best game ever made” multiple times while playing Alan Wake 2.

    Good job Remedy.

    Rose,

    Sadly, it’s highly unlikely that Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t win in every category.

    Forgot about all these games

    mrfriki, (edited ) do gaming w Game of the Year | Nominees

    Not saying they are bad games but 6 sequels, one of them a remake, and not a single new game. That pretty much summarizes the state of the current gaming industry.

    pixelscript, do gaming w Game of the Year | Nominees

    Mario Wonder is a fantastic game, but it has absolutely no business being on this list.

    richisawesome,
    @richisawesome@mstdn.games avatar

    @pixelscript @HowSwayy what utter bollocks, Mario Wonder is by far the best of the bunch. Outstanding game and the best 2D entry since 1991.

    Baldur’s Gate 3 should win, but it won’t. It’ll be Zelda or Spider-Man.
