Capitalism isn’t fixing anything here. In fact, it’s showing that the companies mindlessly following market inflation to keep profits up are doing worse.
I really liked the first AC game but when I played Odyssey I was disappointed. Beautiful game, fun mini-games, nice subsystems like upgrading the ship and whatnot. After the initial couple of hours I started to feel like everything is a chore.
Need a map? No way to buy, you have to run/ride and climb the chore tower.
Want to use equipment? Grind chore for the XP to meet the level requirement.
Want to beat a quest handed to you early? Grind XP
Want to complete side quests? All of the boilerplate fetch/kill quests.
Just please, give me a starting weapon that’s good enough and I can just stealth kill my way through the main quest. Also, just allow me to buy the map.
After the initial couple of hours I started to feel like everything is a chore.
Exactly. I don’t know what I expected, but that was my experience as well. The game more or less told me this:
“Hey, did you enjoy the first chapter? Well guess what? We’re going to throw that at you x20 with the occasional plot beat thrown in for variety. Have fun!”
For the obvious boatload of cash poured into Odyssey’s development, I feel like half as much game done twice as well would have been a better experience. Instead, we get something that is seemingly padded for play-time, in the same way a 4th grader adds extra blank lines to hit the required page count on a book report.
Want to use equipment? Grind chore for the XP to meet the level requirement.
Want to beat a quest handed to you early? Grind XP
Want to complete side quests? All of the boilerplate fetch/kill quests.
I mean this respectfully, but you were holding it wrong.
First off, Odyssey was too big, but I enjoyed it! The voiced side quests were great, especially those heavily involving Kassandra. The Atlantis DLC was sublime. But:
You don’t worry about equipment beyond your level!
Leave future quests in the journal!
Fetch quest? If you’re bored, skip it! TBH I Cheat Engined some money in.
Odyssey requires no grinding, as it has waaay too much filler as is. It is a game that’s utterly miserable if you give into completionist impulses, but pretty neat if you don’t.
…Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t particularly enjoy the combat, and the main story is so dull I don’t even remember it, aside from the Atlantis bits. It’s not a masterpiece. But I remember the experience of trekking across Greece quite fondly.
But Larian themselves released a buggy mess even with early access for 3 years? Why did they rush it out?
Fuck EA and AAA in general, but like practice what you preach Swen. You aren't the small studio you think you are anymore, you have nearly 500 employees.
I mean, all due respect, to the guy, but this doesn't go down until 2027. At least give them a minute to get in the position where they could feasibly fuck up before you berate them for it.
If you look at the Internet they are apparently definitely dismantling the company to sell the pieces but also definitely continuing to make what they make but with MAGA politics but also as a muslim theocracy and trimming down and speeding up but also doubling down on live service at the same time somehow.
And man, one or multiple of those may happen, but almost certainly not all of them and none have happened yet. Given how much of a public-ass public company chasing short term gains they've been historically I can't help but think there's a fair amount of projection going on.
Here's my stance: I have no idea what this means and I have no idea what they're going to do. This is all weird and I have zero frame of reference for how the new owners are going to gel with that organization or what their new objectives are going to be when compared to the old "make more money this quarter than last quarter" thing.
Borderlands really didnt deserve another chance after the shit games theyve released but it seems people fell for.the marketing and gave it one anyway. Now the same thing is happening the game is shit and was sold at a ridiculous price and while you’re sitting there trying to scrap together some enjoyment youve got this asshole Randy hitting headlines daily.
Because just having two characters with the exact same lines is boring, Gerry has had 3 games now, I want to explore someone else as a character, with new motivations, character flaws etc
Let’s be honest, he’s only got 1 game. I tried going back to Witcher 1 and 2 after playing 3 and it’s impossible to adjust to the older game UI. Modding or tweaking it is also not worth it imo so I wouldn’t mind another Geralt game.
Snowflake energy? Na man I’m just realistic. I have never met anyone who recommended Witcher 1/2 online or irl. It’s always about Witcher 3, and that’s because it’s still very playable and one of the best games ever.
It’s the less extreme version of Baldur’s Gate 3. Technically, there are two other games, but you won’t seriously recommend games 1 and 2 to anyone.
I know you understand my point, and it’s easier to say I’m a snowflake rather than actually say anything useful.
I can’t play games anymore because of nonsense like this. I changed hobbies to writing Chinese poetry and watching ballet. The last Ballet I saw was Swan Lake in China. Absolutely beautiful.
Not gonna lie, I was hoping they’d use some Law of Surprise stuff to give Geralt a new ward and let you create your own Witcher. But, if instead I get to do teleport strike bullshit with Ciri’s powers, I’ll be content.
