The factorio artist is unbelievably good.

I wonder what they did with Biters on this world?

I expect we’ll get a post about it eventually, probably closer to release.

Plot twist: there are no biters, the planet just spits lava at you

Toribor,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

I was kind of wondering if there might be threats like that where certain areas are flooded with lava periodically.

packadal,

I don’t think it goes with the vibe of the game, it would disrupt the factory too much

ace,
@ace@lemmy.ananace.dev avatar

It could be interesting with something like the old Pharaoh game and its receding riverbed farming, but you’d have to balance that compared to costs of resourcing in Factorio - or offer some reasonably simple way for the player to protect their resourcing operations against the rising lava.

packadal,

They hint that the drilling awakens something, so I’m guessing different enemy

ace,
@ace@lemmy.ananace.dev avatar

My guess is that drilling is going to cause the Vulcanus-version of pollution, since it makes sense that a volcanic planet wouldn’t have much problem with regular pollution.

Wube is the most absolutely massively based game development company in the world and you cannot tell me otherwise.

beaumains,

Wube is the kind of game dev company that would invent a new algorithm (like the fast inverse square root in quake) and not tell anyone until some insane player realised that their in-game circuit network ARM CPU simulation ran 20% faster than it theoretically should. Then they would publish a Friday facts about it once and move on.

empireOfLove,
@empireOfLove@lemmy.one avatar

You say that like they haven’t already done that. The sheer amount of optimizations they’ve put into factorio are insane, I’d almost guarantee they’ve invented some new data system that’s never been seen before and haven’t told us.

The new decider combinator is going to be so useful.

They will never stop me from using logistics bots for everything.

Kaldo,

GL with that in space 😁

physcx, do gaming w Factorio Friday Facts #382 - Logistic groups

I just picked this game up last month and did my first rocket launch without robots. Now playing again with a friend and he has shown me the way. Go forth my beautiful robot swarm.

ace,
@ace@lemmy.ananace.dev avatar

Nothing quite beats setting up your first bot mall, seeing the swarm put to work making you everything you could ever need is just magical.
And then plopping down blueprints in map mode, making your factory expand in leaps and bounds while you get to do other fun things.

I really wanted to like this game, but having to manage all the things gave me anxiety.

Kaldo,
@Kaldo@kbin.social avatar

I usually have similar stress playing management games but honestly, of all of them factorio really lets you do it at your own pace, especially if you torn off biter expansion. I'd often just say something like "ok this afternoon I'm redesigning the oil refineries because they are a mess" while everything else is just standing by waiting for me. Ticking these things off one by one is kind of the main attraction of games like these tbh

prole,

Same. Every time I’ve tried I just can’t get past the tutorial. Maybe if I take the other person’s advice and turn off enemies at first…

drkt,

I must have a thousand hours in this game by now; just try it without the biters. I don’t bother them anymore, either. It’s literally just stress, they add nothing else.

Drigo,

Well sometimes the stress is part of the fun, some of my playthroughs I remember best, is the deathworld playthroughs

drkt,

Yeah, I’ve had fun too, but on playthrough 4+ they don’t add anything. It’s just stress. I’m good enough at this game to not worry much about it, but it’s still a net negative. If they are very susceptible to this kind of stress, I’m saying they can just turn them off. They don’t add anything to the core gameplay except time stress and that’s good for some and bad for others. One of the major strengths of Factorio is how expansive the vanilla options are.

EthicalAI, do gaming w Factorio Friday Facts #381 - Space Platforms

Wait is this a mod or have I just been totally out of the loop on factorio updates

Player2, do gaming w Factorio Friday Facts #381 - Space Platforms

The actual best way to deal with surplus is to store it all, just in case.

AmosBurton_ThatGuy,
@AmosBurton_ThatGuy@lemmy.ca avatar

The factory may need those resources to grow at some point. Best to stash em away just in case.

ace,
@ace@lemmy.ananace.dev avatar

Yep, but if you run out of storage space then The Factorio Way™ has always been to use some kind of destruction method - from handgunning a wooden box to using a mod to vaporize it into the ether.

Phroon,

You can’t build chests in space, so there’s very limited buffering or surplus options.

I think the biggest change with space is that it appears that the asteroids are an infinite resource.

Can't believe it's gonna be a year before we get to play with these things, now I really wish they didn't start hyping it so soon.

wesley, do games w Friday Facts #381 - Space Platforms

I still haven’t launched a rocket in this game. Every time I end up starting a new save before I make it that far.

To be fair this is how I play a lot of games so not just this one

Xyloph, do games w Friday Facts #381 - Space Platforms

Can’t wait to give that a try! I just wonder what’s going to be the incentive to go to other planets.

wahming,

They’ve locked parts of the new tech tree behind stuff that’s only accessible on other planets

morhp,

Also parts of the existing tech tree, just to be clear.
