Dark age of Camelot, had a guild made up of mostly locals. Did a custom website, scraped Mythics rankings, put in interactive maps, scroll trading system. It was all a hoot, moved to Warcraft after. Solid group of good people.

Candelestine, do games w Anyone have good memories of (or still belong to) a gaming clan or guild?

When I was a teen I used to run them frequently, tons of great memories. First was in a medium-sized MUD (early purely text-based mmorpgs), playerbase of around 100ish. Had active pvp, which made things harder for the newbies, which kinda capped the server’s growth.

Since my teen self named us “Souls of Chivalry” and we had grown into the second strongest guild, we set out to protect the defenseless.

It became common for a chi member to teleport in shortly after a new player joined. Tutorials didn’t really exist yet, so we’d answer questions and give them a prepared bag to help them survive the early levels. We’d patrol pvp-heavy areas looking for high level players spawn camping and shit, whereupon we’d kill them and confiscate their stuff. If a player bought land or something and came under attack while they were farming, a single server shout could bring half our guild teleporting in in the next 45 seconds, sometimes to quite the war.

Fun times.

That’s awesome when you can organize an in-game group like that to achieve something you couldn’t do alone. Sounds like fun times for sure! :)

When Youtube Gaming was still young I played Call of Duty with people from a gaming community called Hupit.com, which was founded by a prominent COD youtuber. With Covid I found people through Reddit for Simracing, and we have done tons of races together in the last 3 years.

Iapar, do gaming w Well, Cities: Skylines 2 is here, and it's another broken game release.

On days like this I ask myself if the reason games are released that broken is because there are no real software engineers in the game industry. Like a carmack with doom. Someone who understands the technical site of things.

Doods,

There is a theory that games release like that to punish pirates, as anything but the launch version - and DLCs - rarely gets pirated.

Knusper,

Gamedev is all about smokes and mirrors. A conventional software engineer will actively resent the shitfuckery you have to do, to make games run well (for good reason; it introduces complexity into already insanely complex systems).

Some performance work, you cannot defer, like fundamental design decisions (3D vs. 2D, raytracing or not) or if you’ve coded a tiny feature and for some reason, it completely obliterates performance.

But there’s always going to be tons of features that have been implemented well, they don’t obliterate performance, but if you replace them with an unintuitive/complex smoke-and-mirror solution, then you may be able to shave off 20% execution time for that feature. Or not. Often no real way to know, except to try it out.

Some of these do need to be tackled throughout development, too, but it’s easy to end up with a big block at the end of development.
Especially, if you had to rush a number of features that marketing promised, so that you can make the release date that marketing promised many months before anyone has any fucking clue how long it’ll take.

Paradox published games are so often great gameplay-wise but technically incompetent lol, wouldn‘t surprise me if it utilized like 2 CPU cores tops to simulate a whole metropolis

Marzepansion,

It’s using unity game engine. I’m a graphics programmer in the industry and at my current and last workplace I made tech for games studios (i.e. I dealt with performance of easily 100 games a year at one point). Unity by far was default the worst to deal with due to the limited tools to fix issues that were inherint to the engine. Note don’t take this as me saying unity is a bad engine, it’s just that it isn’t a performant one. Its focus is elsewhere (accessibility and ease of development, things it excels at).

So yes, you can definitely assume that, in fact I’d assume one core for the simulation unless they wrote an entire new architecture to replace unity’s functionality (you’d still be locked to single thread sync points, but that’s manageable). It’s a hassle most don’t deal with as it’s a lot of work to struggle against writing code like unity wants you to write it.

I worked in a studio that exactly did that a decade ago, and it was painful and frankly a huge upfront dev cost that takes a long time to pay off.

sychthys, (edited )

Sklylines 1 was on Unity, but Skylines 2 is using Unreal as its engine this time.

I stand corrected. Must have been confused by the tech demo and hearing about “the new engine” from some CS content creators and making assumptions. It is indeed made in Unity, which is a shame. I used to love that engine, but it really hasn’t kept up with the times. I was so excited for it being in UE5.

MrScottyTay,

I’m pretty sure it’s still unity. The original announcement trailer was rendered using unreal though.

Marzepansion,

Nope, the announcement trailer was made in Unreal, they’ve confirmed it’s in Unity.

Here’s their official twitter account confirming that: twitter.com/colossalorder/…/1633060715132080130

Omega_Haxors, (edited ) do gaming w What is something (feature, modes, settings...) you would like to see become a standard in video games?

I want there to be systems that have absolutely no game design in them. Stuff that literally is just there to add random possibilities to the experience. Extremely basic and consistent rules which are extremely easy to grasp but result in all sorts of crazy shit. Stuff like redstone from minecraft or fairy dust in Stardew Valley. I want to completely forget about the game for a bit and just get completely lost in the intricacies.

A perfect example of this: Adding a joker (wildcard) to poker. It’s just one basic card, you know what it does, but the amount that one card can completely break the game leads to far more interest than the base game could ever provide.

sandriver, do gaming w What is something (feature, modes, settings...) you would like to see become a standard in video games?

I have cognitive impairments and it does my head in that it’s still hit or miss whether games have rewindable text and voiceovers. Definitely my favourite thing in a game is eing ale to open a dialogue log and even replay voiced lines. Should be in every game, it’s such a small accessibility thing.

JakenVeina, do gaming w What is something (feature, modes, settings...) you would like to see become a standard in video games?

Borderless Windowed mode. Seriously, there is 0 excuse for PC games to not support it, it’s 2023.

Plume,

I’m gonna be honest, I never really understood what it did. The difference between fullscreen and windowed mode is kind of obvious, but borderless? I get what it does, it’s like windowed mode but borderless and it can take the whole screen. But then why not just make it fullscreen? I don’t understand it.

And especially when apparently some games run better with it? Which… I don’t know, I just don’t understand it.

JakenVeina,

It means you can take focus away from the game without it throwing a hissy fit. I.E. you can click out of it.

I mostly agree with this post, but

the focus of Cities: Skylines has always been on building beautiful cities (vs. having a realistic simulation)

this is simply not true

TwinTusks,

Thats what I always thought of the game.

Yes, erm… totally about building beautiful cities.
