I’m in the minority, I know, but I have mostly negative memories of playing Subnautica. I enjoyed exploring new areas, and the progression of the story, but the hours spent looking for one more resource so I could progress just made me mad. I don’t like save-scumming, but after
spoilerlosing my seamoth to a leviathan for the 3rd time, I said fuck it, and save-scummed regularly.
I had just finished playing Outer Wilds and my friends said “oh, then you would love Subnautica!” No, not the same kind of game at all. I say all of this so that anyone thinking of playing it has the right expectations: if you can’t find the one thing you’re looking for, I recommend just looking up a guide on where to find it. I don’t think the game funnels you to the correct areas well enough for you to find everything you need naturally.
When I think of Subnautica, I just remember having to drink water like every 5 minutes or so. I would have loved to explore, but I was busy getting basic resources all the time.
That was another reason, yes. Apparently you’re supposed to find the parts to the water filtration system relatively early in the game, and it will regularly spit out large bottles of water that help a lot. I didn’t. So yeah, for 90% of the game I’m having to periodically chase Bladderfish for 5m so I can spend 2 minutes spam crafting a bunch of waters, so i can carry several around with me, taking up valuable space in my inventory.
You can play on a mode without survival mechanics, or find the water filtration system and grow plants from the islands on your cyclops to trivialize them. Before you get there though they’re kind of a pain.
Yeah, I really liked it but I wish the devs would’ve implemented one more skill mode at a slightly easier level. I was OK with losing whatever inventory I’d collected during the single trip if I died, but I really wanted the “sea moth doesn’t explode you just have to start from base again” mode. Especially since I lost one of them because I couldn’t figure out which key did the electric charge zap thing.
We’ve proven that we can find the blueprints and materials necessary to make the thing in the first place, so having to collect all that metal again (with limited inventory space) just felt like busy work.
Yeah, I think I can only tolerate busy work games when played in a group. Because then you can delegate the work, and at least you’re still hanging out. Like the Forest.
I’m sure everyone is all over this, but Dave the diver is so much fun. Little bit of rpg, little bit a farm sim, little bit a restaurant sim, throw in some action sequences
If you’d not mentioned BG3 then more people would agree, but any game that is buggy should be refundable for sure and to say other wise is anti consumer
Cities Skylines sees a fairly decent improvement going to the 3D cache chips from AMD (17% speedup here for the 5800x3D). Whats your ability to increase the budget to go for a 7800X3D look like? If this is a genre of game you like and you want to hold off as long as possible between upgrades, it might be worth springing the extra. The difference the 3D cache provides in some games is rather extraordinary. City builders, automation, and similar games tend to benefit the most. AAA games tend to benefit the least (some with effectively no gain).
A 7600X should be more than capable of handling the game though. So it’s not a question of need but if it’s worth it to you.
You do not want 4800 CL40 RAM though, that’s too slow. I’d strongly recommend going for 32GB of RAM as well; 16GB can be gobbled up quickly, especially if you want to use mods in Cities Skylines.
Going up even to DDR5-6000 is not much of a price increase. I’d suggest 6000 and something in the range of CL36-CL40. There’s a lot of 32GB kits in those specs in the ~$90 range. I would not build a gaming system today with 16GB of RAM.
If you don’t mind a group of friends playing multiplayer, there is Stumpt. Depending on the game they’re playing, you either get some commentary about the game or in the case of videos like their Game of Life 2 videos, they kinda just talk about whatever because they’ve played it so much.
I like RKG! They play Dark Souls and those types of games- one of them plays, the other two chat about the lore of the game or whatever. Right now they’re playing Elden Ring!
I just wanted to comment to say that I find the game just as buggy as you say. I do think that some people are more sensitive than others. I’m playing couch coop and my gaming partner doesn’t notice any of the bugs until I call them out for him. Unless they are game breaking. Within 11 hours of play I have encountered 3 bugs that warranted a game restarts and countless other bugs that ranged from minor to frustrating.
This is typical larian though. Divinity 1 + 2 were the same for me. If anything this game is even buggier.
You can refund games for being buggy, you cannot however, play them for dozens of hours and then refund them. Steam’s limit is two hours and two weeks.
I think the “2 weeks” is the line for auto-refund, but they can and will refund you after that at their discretion. And they don’t seem to be jerks about it.
Yeah. I’ve definitely gotten refunds past those limits. But I’ve had a Steam account for like 16 years at this point, lots of games, and I’ve requested a refund maybe twice.
Steam is known to be more generous about the rule if you have few refunds on your profile and a decent amount of purchases. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for updates, even if the update makes the game unplayable.
Most of the videos consists of two friends, Mike and Zack, playing modded Bethesda games. Their main gimmick is that they are playing games like Fallout NV in "multiplayer" but they also play other stuff (Mass Effect, Inscription, Stray to name a few).
Lot's of military stories, some great gun rants from Zack and a general feeling of just two friends having adventures together.
I also completely forgot to mention another duo - Chip & Ironicus.
This one is a little different as they record their commentary over premade footage. They can also be a bit more... low energy (?) compared to many bigger channels but if there's one thing they (or more specifically Chip) really shine in, is the huge amount of effort put into each and every playthrough.
Pretty much every episode is released in two versions, cut and uncut commentary, to let you choose whether you want the option to focus during cutscenes etc. They are also filled with cool trivia, secrets and just good skill level in general.
They have a pretty legendary MGSV LP where Chip prepared 3 seperate playthroughs, each with a different approach (stealth, combat and goofy).
Besides that, they also have stream recordings with live commentary, a podcast and regular charity streams.
Chip worked at recently closed Volition so he could definitely use more views.
You say that rolling back to a previous save “didn’t fix it”? Do you mean that the error happens every time you reload? How far back are you going in time?
Yes, the issues I encounter are 100% repro. I roll back to before the interaction that is broken at the time, but I had so many broken dialogues I’m too tired. My 2nd refund request was rejected by Steam, I wrote an email to Larian, albeit I fully doubt they will even respond, considering how much emails they get related to bugs. I’m currently sitting rewriting my CV. Some people may not understand, but I’ve spent my life in gaming, my work is literally being a gaming QA tester and I’m too tired.
