Been playing a lot ofDeadlock still, finally getting a grasp of how to play it feels like. Took a while to understand priorities and what to focus on and how to execute builds. Still held back a bit by my aim, but found enough ability-based heroes to still be able to perform. It’s a very fun game! I can’t play too many games in a row because it gets intense and stressful, but I’m really enjoying it.

I’ve also been playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution for the first time as something more relaxing and story based. It’s been alright so far. Don’t think it’s been hitting the heights of the original Deus Ex so far, but it’s enjoyable enough.

For Oblivion, there is Skyblivion coming out next year.

Not sure what you hope would be added in a “remake” though. You’re asking for something which would inherently do very little and be exactly the sort of cash grab that we normally condemn. You want these games with better graphics or mechanics? Play with mods.

I wouldn’t hold your breath on it. That mod collection has been in development for many years now. They keep pushing the release date forward, and even when it is released, it’s still built off of the really old Skyrim game engine. People who want a remake, not a remaster, want a game that has the same capabilities but with a newer game engine. It really does matter, because it affects what is possible to do in the game. You can’t just use the old outdated game engine and upscale the graphics. It’s simply will not be possible and will be sluggish, slow as hell. Look at Starfield. Utter failure because many people expected it to have a new game engine. The one it has now is just not up to par

Skyrim has not the same engine as Oblivion and Starfield has not the same engine as Skyrim. There always were huge upgrades and changes to the engine, saying that Starfield has the same engine is like saying that Unreal 5 is the same old engine as Unreal 1. It is the same engine in the same way as I am the same as my father or grandfather. We share lots of features and DNA and have the same last name, but we are very different in many ways.

The DNA example might be a bad comparison to make, though, when hereditary illnesses are also a comparison you could make to an engine that has the same flaws as it’s predecessors.

Hopefully whatever they do next with their engine moves away from the cells and worldspaces model of their previous engines. After all of Starfield’s criticisms, they need to move away from loadscreen triggers as much as possible.

The cells and worldspaces are needed for a engine that allows huge amounts of persistent dynamic objects that can be removed from and added to the world freely., That is the reason why we don’t see games with large worlds like this in other engines. Even more so when the game has to run on consoles too. Neither No Man’s Sky, nor Outer Worlds or Cyberpunk have worlds or places full of persistent dynamic objects, nearly everything is static and hard baked into the world.

Whenever people criticise Bethesda games for their engine, I pretty much assume right away they know nothing about game development. Bethesda’s engine is something they have a lot of control over and can constantly improve and iterate on. It’s not as though Starfield and Morrowind are running on the exact same codebase.

Starfield is bad because of bad game design, not bad game development. Skyrim was buggy on release as well, and yet people loved it because the design of the game was good enough that people were willing to forgive the programming flaws. People overvalue the engine in discussions about Bethesda games and it’s become this meme among people to seem like they sound like they know what they’re talking about, but ultimately the flaws in Bethesda games that determine their success has very little to do with what engine they use.

Also, the Skyblivion team is constantly releasing dev diaries showing the progress, and the mod is nearly finished. It looks very well done, and the whole thing is out in the open. There’s no reason to be cynical about whether it will ever release when you can literally go look at the progress with your own eyes.

It’s a live service game. Any other game they’d say “Well most of the work is done already” but in this case it requires regular ongoing investment.

Dusk. Quake meets Evil Dead. One of the best games I’ve played in years. It’s definitely more of a straight up shooter than a horror game, but the themes/setting/art style nail the spooktober vibe. I replay it every autumn and always have a great time

The free one was the first game my kid was able to pick up and learn how to play games on. He was 4 at the time, and it was such a simple game that he was able to figure out the controls enough to play. He is almost 8 now and told him this was coming last week, and he was super excited. As much as I wanted him to enjoy video games, he really doesn’t play or care about too many, so it will be cool to see him enjoy it

If you’re looking for a more schlocky horror experience, give Resident Evil 8 a try! Extremely fun to play with a story that would be kinda ‘eh’ if the performances didn’t elevate it to cult-following b-movie perfection.

Subnautica would be a good game to transition from the end of summer to the beginning of fall. Spooky atmosphere where you play (almost) entirely underwater.

Crow Country came out earlier this year and definitely capitalizes on PS1 era horror games. In that vein also, Signalis is an excellent cerebral sci-fi horror.

The Painscreek Killings sounds like the open ended deduction that you're describing. You play as a journalist who goes to an abandoned town to try to solve a cold case murder. The game doesn't tell you where or what to do next, or how to do it. I liked it because it was just me trying to figure the story out and what to do, not the game telling me "Put x and y together. Oh, look, it leads you to z!" (Also it's currently on sale on Steam for like 5 bucks.)

I think it is really going to depend on how “media” approaches it.

You clearly want it to fail. So do a lot of people. It is the same logic behind how every single Battlefield is the worst game ever made during beta/launch (and all the fans keep saying “Never play Conquest. It has always fucking sucked. Play Rush”) which lead to the first year being “Can Dice fix this unprecedented massive blunder and make this game good?”.

Or… just look at how everyone danced on the grave of Concord basically immediately.

And a lot of that is because, as Yahtzee et al taught us, it is a lot more fun to shit on something than to admit we liked it. Talking about how it is the worst furry fanwank ever is a lot easier than putting yourself out there and acknowledging that Dust: An Elysium Tale’s themes of courage and ethics in the face of inevitable failure unseamed you.

Starfield was a new IP. It was also a game that was “okay” at best with a lot of the Bethesda jank. And the world map traversal was HORRIBLE but… so was exploration in Mass Effect and we loved that until the last hour of 3.

But also? Look at Fallout. There are people who will argue that all the Bethesda Fallouts shat on the originals (and ignore that most of that nonsense and lack of cohesive theming was there since 2 but…). But 3 is almost universally loved (outside of the NMA crowd) and New Vegas is that game everyone claims to have loved but almost nobody actually played. And 4… was definitely a step back in a lot of ways. But it had a strong marketing campaign and, gameplay wise, was perfectly fine if not better than 3. So after that initial hatefest it is pretty well regarded.

TES6 will obviously have a very strong marketing campaign. There are going to be the people who will say it is shit but most of them will ALSO start talking about how Skyrim was shit and Oblivion was the last good Bethesda game (us Morrowind fans will be too busy watching Matlock re-runs) which will rapidly undermine them. At which point it will boil down to whether people want that kind of open world game.

All that said? I have an increasingly bad feeling that Microsoft is killing Obsidian to save Bethesda because TES is a much more valuable brand than Pillars or just “we make amazingly good games that are missing the last five hours”. Starfield being “fine” hurt it, but it was very clear people were desperate for a “real” Skyrim after the horrific sin of basically making a Fallout 3 scale game in Outer Worlds.

But when Avowed hits next year and isn’t “Baldurs Gate 3 but on the scale of Skyrim but also better”? Obsidian gets shitcanned (likely while Phil et al talk about how Pentiment and Avowed are exactly the kinds of games MS needs to make) and the entire TES6 marketing campaign becomes about how Microsoft and Bethesda are sorry that those horrible evil games exist and they have hired a bunch of influencers to help them make sure they make the game right (see: CDPR and Cyberpunk) and that TES6 is going to be a return to form that is informed by What Players Want ™.

I definitely think FO4 has much better gameplay than 3. I replayed Vegas a while back and while it’s an awesome game in so many ways, the gameplay feels archaic compared to 4. You can improve that some with mods but it’s never going to feel as good as the native solution.

4 has weak writing, there’s no doubt, but it improved on 3 in many ways I think. There are really only a couple areas where I think it regressed. Most others it far surpassed.

I haven’t tried everything out there, but so far nothing I’ve tried is true perfection. The controller I use as daily driver for my PC is an Xbox 360 controller, which I find extremely nice - except for the D-pad. It also lacks the fancy tricks of the PS5 controller - a controller I Iike less for ergonomics but love for stuff like haptic feedback.
