Kovukono, do games w Mad Max vs Days Gone, which do you like more?

I picked up Days Gone well after it released, and didn’t have the bugs, and got well and truly invested in it. Mad Max wasn’t a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but Days Gone felt like it had more content in the world. I loved both, but probably Days Gone.

JackbyDev, do gaming w What was the formative horror game of your childhood?

Slenderman. The OG. I didn’t like horror of any type and was always so scared. I was in early college years and chaperoning for a church trip and the two kids in my room were high schoolers I was friends with. They wanted to okay it but we’re too scared. Idk what, something about them being too scared to play and making me do it gave me the courage to. Slenderman just looked so goofy in this game. I finally couldn’t take it seriously. These two kids were like cowering behind the hotel bed though lol.

Later it was Amnesia: the Dark Descent. It was tough but I got through it. I played it during 4he middle of the day with the lights on lol. I would pause whenever anything scary happened but I got through it!

I finally started Frostpunk! Things were going so well…then the storm came, my people started freezing to death and executed me. Looking forward to starting another uplifting play through today!

Deep Rock Galactic? It has the mining component…that’s about it though. It’s co-op mining along with first person shooting combat.

I know it’s not exactly what you asked for but I thought I’d throw it out there.

I don't think it aged well but haven and hearth blew my mind years ago how immersive and in depth it was.

Project zomboid doesn't have smelting right now but it it will eventually, but the crafting / gathering loop is pretty good and complex.

SilverFlame,

I loved the short time I played HnH but multi-client botting is the only way to keep up with everyone and it just turned me off of the whole game.

Kaldo,
@Kaldo@kbin.social avatar

Oh yeah, I played it very small scale many years ago and never got into pvp or large scale competitive building so I only had local stories to keep me entertained. Had a small base with a few friends and we'd trade beeswax for low quality ores from a nearby big village so we could get some metal tools since we didn't have access to a mine.

It was always so exciting loading a chest full of valuables (to us at least it was a fortune), carrying it a boat, traveling 5-10 minutes down river to a big settlement and then yelling and trading outside of their gate. Then they carry out their goods while you anxiously wait there, not allowed to enter their big city 😅

The pvp, botting, cheaters and general dev attitude really turned me off that game but I'll always have fond memories of it.

dual_sport_dork, (edited ) do games w I would like to enjoy Zelda BOTW but …
@dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world avatar

A large part of the progression in BOTW (and to a lesser extent, its sequel) is getting the means to permanently or at least easily deal with the various types of environmental challenges, to the point that the ones that were tough to surmount in the early game aren’t even really an inconvenience in the end.

These are, in no particular order:

  • Areas that are cold.
  • Areas that are hot.
  • Areas that are on fire.
  • Eventually finding stronger weapons that don’t break as fast.
  • Getting better armor, and improving it, to make combat easier.
  • Getting a horse to make traveling to new areas easier.
  • Improving your maximum health and more importantly, max stamina so you can climb more stuff and glide longer distances.
  • Getting a movement technique that allows you to yeet yourself to the top of objects.

FWIW, if you stick to the “intended” path on the Great Plateau (the starting area of the game, where you seem to be) the old man will explicitly tell you what to do to deal with the cold. There are actually multiple solutions for getting up there without freezing your nads off.

spoilerThe most straightforward one is to use one of the cooking pots, either the one at the old man’s cabin or the one outside of the cave where you first meet him, to cook up some spicy peppers and eat them. This gives you a time limited buff that makes you immune to the cold. You can also carry a lit torch, which keeps you warm as long as you’re holding it. You can also find the recipes for two special cold resistance dishes in the old man’s cabin if you read his diary on the table, and if you bring him both of these at the top of the mountain he’ll give you the Warm Doublet, a piece of armor that permanently protects you from cold. But anything you cook a spicy pepper into will give you a cold resistance buff.

holyshitflapjacks, do gaming w Lies of P advice request

If BB had too many RPG elements for you then you might want to skip LoP. To answer your question though, just pick Bastard at the beginning and never look at another weapon other than the rapier you start with. Don’t change your Legion Arm, just use the starter one for damage and poise breaking. Only put levels into Vigor, Vitality, and Technique when leveling for stamina, HP, and damage respectively. Eventually you will be able to buy an item called a “Technique Crank” from a guy whose name rhymes with panini. Put that on your rapier when you get it. That’s it.

Parrying is geared towards Strength builds (Strength is called Motivity in LoP). If you want to do strength pick Sweeper instead of Bastard and level Motivity instead of Technique. Put a Motivity Crank on your weapon instead of Technique.

MrBobDobalina,

This is exactly what I was after, thank you! I will probably parry too much coming from Sekiro so the Strength route sounds good - is the Sweeper as viable as the Bastard all the way through (with motivity levelling)?

I think if I’d asked a similar question for BB I would have loved it, but I was stubborn and tried to learn all of it by myself. Instead I learned that I just want to be mastering a few mechanics rather than having open ended options to dozens

holyshitflapjacks,

No worries, happy to help. Yeah strength is totally viable. Just be aware that in LoP, parrying is just blocking. When you block, you take less damage and you get “rally” like in BB and get that HP back by hitting things. You can do a “perfect block” with good timing and take no damage. There is no Dark Souls or Sekiro-style parry mechanic.

MrBobDobalina,

Oh damn. I thought from some gameplay I’ve seen that perfect blocks also worked towards staggering an enemy? Which made me think of Sekiro, just not as pronounced / focused on

KingSlayer,

I believe perfect blocks do count towards staggering the enemy. I’ve put several larger enemies into the stagger state from perfect blocks. I’m running the Motivity build described above and it works great. I will say that dodging and blocking are both very important. Some enemies are better to dodge and some are better to block.

Blaiz0r,

You should start a wiki that contains ‘How to play the game’ posts like these, something a bit like BeforeIPlay

MrBobDobalina,

Thanks again for your advice!

I’ve just beaten the scrapped watchman and I’m really enjoying it, and having the decisions streamlined by you is helping for sure. The only thing I’ve done differently is change the handle to the baton handle, as it’s a bit faster to deliver the charged hit (which is crucial when I’m going for stagger as often as I can).

MargotRobbie, do games w Game wikis just aren't as popular anymore?
@MargotRobbie@lemmy.world avatar

Suppose there is a federated ActivityPub based Wiki network, how would that work? Fandom is so terrible for looking up actual info with irritating video ads, especially since after they brought out their competition from Curse.

bitsplease,

I don’t think it’d work all that well to be frank. You’d wind up with dozens of pages for each subject since each instance can have their own. You could probably come up with a distinct federated solution that might work though, where the servers are federated but the content is shared. Not sure how that would look in practice though, and how you could keep instances from diverging
