Been just thinking about one of my favorite SNES era games – Illusion of Gaia. If you’re doing emulation, highly recommend. I’m in the process of picking up a SNES and functioning cart to play it myself for the first time in a decade.

If you liked chants of shenaar, check out heaven’s vault. I think it does what chants of shenaar does, but better, and it did it years before. It was a bit strange to me to see chants of shenaar get so much hype, but have heaven’s vault stay slept on.

I considered it as well, but this review made me reconsider. Would you say it is as bad as that review makes it seem?

iheartneopets,

Funnily enough, what that review said is basically what I said in my review about chants of shenaar, except without the glowing praise. Lots of tedious running across maps and very surface level language-puzzling, whereas I don’t remember any tedium with heaven’s vault at all. I guess different strokes for different folks?

I would say, it’s such a unique and well-executed concept that I would give it a play yourself to see what you think. It’s one of those games I haven’t found a replacement for, even with chants of shenaar.

SorteKanin,
@SorteKanin@feddit.dk avatar

I’ll give it a shot!

swordsmanluke,

Well - I played both and I quite enjoyed Heaven’s Vault as well.

I played HV through twice - once for the story and then a second time to see how far I could alter that story with different choices. My wife even played a third time to try for a really particular set of events.

The translation game in HV goes much harder than Chants’. After the first playthrough, you get longer and more challenging texts to decipher.

Also - there’s no backtracking really required. The game is pretty strict about telling you where you can and cannot go and reacting to what you found or didn’t find. You can cut whole plot lines in HV and it’s no problem.

Which makes it one of the better games for replayablity in my mind.

It is - for sure - slow paced. Almost meditative.

Even if you’re not a huge James Bond fan, it’s still a fantastic game. I sank countless amounts of hours into it as a kid. The multiplayer is top notch as well.

Really can’t go wrong with any of the Bond games on the PS2.

Portal Revolution. It’s a pretty good fan project. A few new mechanics to spice things up, and while I’ve heard better voice acting, I’ve heard a lot worse.

I’ve kind of been flip flopping between these games:

  • Warframe
  • Star Wars KOTOR 1
  • Baldurs Gate 3
Turmbaumeister,

How’s kotor holding up? It’s my favourite game ever but I’m wondering how outdated it is.

GlennicusM,

I had to install a ton of mods to play it in a modern resolution, but otherwise plays well enough. Graphics are aged but looks good for how old it is.

Zabejcowane i zabezpieczone olejowoskiem, efekt dobry + .

pfm,

To biurko ma 5-10 lat. Czy drewno jest dobrej jakości - nie umiem ocenić. Na pewno straciło przez złe traktowanie…

Wielkie dzięki @harc oraz dla anonimowego czytelnika!

There’ve been a few great games to recently release out of Early Access, so these:

  • Secrets of Grindea, a SNES-style action RPG with tongue-in-cheek writing and open character progression
  • Spiritfall, a platform fighter roguelite
  • Spell Disk, a roguelite with an interesting, intricate spell chain system

Still on Ace Attorney trilogy. Might take a break before heading into the second trilogy, but I’m about halfway through the third game.

While I’d played the first and some of the second game before, third is entirely new to me. The second chapter was pretty funny, even if it kind of went on a little too long.

I burst out laughing several times at how ridiculous it all was (which is saying a lot considering how ridiculous the series is), but the double jeopardy line at the end was the icing on the cake.

Like, I absolutely should have seen that coming because it was far too easy and I knew something was strange because of how obvious it was. Yet, I still carried on until a realised “Wait, what the fuck? I’ve just been played like a woodwind at a symphony.”

DeLite is one of my new favourite characters. Unintentionally hilarious in the best way.

SmoochyPit,

Ayy, I just played the first game for the time recently! I really enjoyed it. I’ve been meaning to continue, but I’ve been pretty busy. Would you say it’s worth playing more?

comicallycluttered, (edited )

If you enjoyed the first one, then yeah, definitely worth a shot.

It’s basically more of the same, but with some added character development (Edgeworth in particular) and a bigger narrative arc going on in the background which starts after the first case in the second game.

The entire series is really good about balancing some more serious moments with over the top crazines as well, which I like.

There are two new game mechanics introduced in the second game, which some people like and some people find annoying. I don’t really mind, but it does occasionally result in a bit of backtracking.

Also, if you like domineering women with whips, the big prosecutor you go up against for most of the second game is more than happy to whip literally everyone in the courtroom (and out of it, really).

SmoochyPit,

domineering women with whips

I cleared my schedule. I’ll be playing this asap.

I’m interested in them mostly because my NES, SNES, Genesis and OG GameBoy all still work, and it would be nice to be able to still use my cartridges once they finally bite the dust. I got real lucky with the NES getting refurbished by Nintendo of America in the early 2000’s before they released the Wii and were still servicing all their old consoles.

So yeah, I’m curious about how functional they are, for sure.

I have a RetroFreak and it plays all of the carts you listed (and more)

    Link

You can also dump the carts to a micro SD card (as well as add your own ROMS if you want). I will say though, the games you dump are locked to the console. So it’s more for convenience of not having to load them again.

Anyway, I really like it and dumped all of my physical games to it.
