strongarm, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of September 22nd

I’m trying to focus on Nier: Automata, halfway through the 9S playthrough, it’s an interesting game, not very deep in gameplay, but every so often surprises me.

I’ve also just picked up Monster Hunter Rise with Sunbreak, I’ve never really played a MH game properly and find them really Grundy, but I hear Rise isn’t so bad so wanted to give it a fair go.

Also just finished getting a Druid to 100 in Diablo IV, my first season and I am done with the game in about 2 weeks, I may try another class in the next season but the game seems very shallow and repetive.

Loved Nier: Automata. I didn’t finish it completely, I think I got through Nines’ playthrough and stopped after that and sold the game.

That music sticks in your head though! Have you seen the Anime?

strongarm,

Yeah the music is really nice.

I haven’t seen the anime, I don’t really know anything about the series apart from this game, but I hear there’s quite a bit of other media out there

Treat it objectively and ignore that it’s a Final Fantasy game.

I loved it. Everything from the story to the music to the combat. I bought and played through both DLCs as well. For me, it is the perfect mix of a great movie and great video game.

Plot: The Ezio trilogy.
Core Gameplay: Black Flag/Rogue.

I just want to chill out after a long day: Odyssey.
I actually want to get sucked into the setting and characters: Black Flag.

HipsterTenZero, do games w What do you think about random encounters?
@HipsterTenZero@dormi.zone avatar

I actually only like random encounters when I’ve changed up either builds or party members and want to play around with it for a little bit. In that sense, I guess you could say I don’t like random encounters, but rather easily accessible encounters.

Really enjoying it so far.

I was initially saddened to hear it was going to follow in the steps of 15 and be an action based rpg, and I thought 15 was brain dead “warp strike simulator” with horrible story pacing and poor characters (until last 5% of the game).

This game though has simple but effective action combat with enough variety to be fun and the characters and pacing are a joy.

I still wish we could get some FF games like 7 or 9 where there is depth to equipment, magic and turn based combat, but jrpgs have been iterating away from complex battle systems and sell well so can’t see them going back.

I still think FF7 was the pinnacle as material mixing and matching with equipment was really simple and super fun.

Anyway rnat over, FF16 is good, recommend it.

Sounds like you just need to play an RTS game.

I fucking hate roman numerals; the whole time I thought y’all were talking about ff14, not ff16

Overall I enjoyed it, but I’d say it’s probably a mid-tier FF if you we are taking them all as a whole. So, to me, it’s a solid RPG and a solid game, but it doesn’t redefine anything, necessarily.

But I definitely enjoyed it.

I had seen some complaints that you “only get one sword! It’s dumb!” And I don’t know where that came from: you craft lots of swords. Maybe they are upset you only use a sword as your primary melee weapon? To which I might point out Cloud, Squall, Tidus, Lightning, most FF protagonists in games without job systems. It’s a sword plus magic like most FF games.

Maybe the complaint is that you don’t get to use other characters since they mostly just do their own thing. OK, sure. But also, that’s the game. If they’d have just lifted the FF7 combat people would bitch about that, too. It’s like a no-win situation.

Factorio on death world settings. If not stressful enough install the rampant biters mod.

    I_Has_A_Hat,

    Not a base-building game.

3ds might be my favorite system, I really want a third party emulation machine that can capture that form factor so bad. It was just so easy to pop it open and play whatever I was playing and just close the lid. So many hours lost in the monster hunter, pokemon and picross 3d

I’m really hoping someone will step up once the second-hand sales start going up, though it might be hard to emulate the 3ds itself on a small handheld like that.

The demand should be higher compared to other systems you can easily experience on PC or even Switch emulation.

So I’m ~5 hours into the story so far. I was super worried it’d be a bad followup to the first game, which I loved.

It’s pretty different, without getting into any spoilers, but I’m really enjoying it at this point. It’s well done, the atmosphere and decisions are on point, and the micro management seems lesser.

A few UI complaints, I found a tiny bug, but all in all it seems like a good and long single player immersive story city builder. Exactly what I want from the series.

I’d give it a preliminary 8.5/10 because I’m biased and love the first one.

JCPhoenix, do gaming w Let's discuss: Nintendo DS
    @JCPhoenix@beehaw.org avatar

My first DS was the DS Lite. I bought it when the game “Contact” came out. Played various JRPGs on it, as I’m wont to do with handhelds. IIRC, the DS Lite was backwards compatible with GBA carts, which was great. I loved the look, feel, and size of it. Honestly, DS Lite is probably my favorite Nintendo handheld, with the Switch a close second.

After that, I think the next DS that I had was the 3DS. Which I still have; I even booted it up earlier this year to try to play “Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice.” I didn’t end up playing it on the 3DS, since I have that anthology on Steam, but I wanted to see where I was.

Games or series that I played a lot on the DS line were practically all of the mainline Ace Attorney games, and even some of the spin offs like the Professor Layton crossover and AA:Investigations. Fire Emblem was another. I think I played Awakening, Fates, and Echoes. I played at least one Pokemon game, too.
