I use this exact setup, heavily. I’ve used both XBox controlllers and Switch Pro Controllers (the pros unfortunately have a weird driver issue, where you don’t get full analog range out of the sticks). The controller connects directly to the Shield via Bluetooth, and the Steam Link app recognizes them, no problem.

The Steam Link app is occasionally quirky, but overall, I’m very happy with the setup. Have played Elden Ring, Hollow Knight, Celeste, Armored Core 6, Mass Effect, all this way. My wife has done a bunch as well. We’ve even done multiplayer with Tales of Symphonia and Plate Up, and I’ve done emulated games with Dolphin, although that was a fair bit trickier to setup.

Voices of the Void. Because I like the subtle feeling of dread and knowing any action could result in something horrific.

Factorio. Optimization can always be improved upon.

Kenshi. Finally got my base built. Only cost a few arms and legs… and some of them weren’t mine!

frog, do gaming w Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of September 3rd

Been playing Spirit of the North this week. I’ve actually finished it, including 100% achievement completion, because it’s not a huge game. What is really sticking out to me right now, though, is that I adore this game. I like a lot of games, but it’s pretty rare for me to absolutely love one.

I’ve also just finished a run through Baldur’s Gate 2, playing a bard for the first time ever. I enjoyed the class more than I thought I would. Onwards to Throne of Bhaal next week!

ConstableJelly,

What did you like about Spirit of the North? I got it with PS Plus but haven’t bothered with it because it got pretty middling review scores. Looks beautiful though.

frog,

So, yeah, the fact that it’s a beautiful game is definitely part of it! Visually it’s stunning, and the music is also really beautiful. I also think it’s superbly written: there’s absolutely no dialogue, but there is still a narrative as you play through each area, and I think that’s genuinely very hard to do well, but Spirit of the North does. I really got invested in the relationship between the two characters. There’s also no combat or fighting in the game, so it’s all focused around the platforming and puzzle elements.

I can definitely see why it’s not to everyone’s tastes. It got “very positive” on Steam, so it’s rated more highly on PC than on the PS, and the negative reviews it did get are complaining about either the controls or the game not telling you what you need to do. So the former is fair, I think: the devs focused on making a beautiful game, so it’s about the experience, not the mechanics. The controls aren’t bad as such, but they’re not as smooth as you’d expect for a platformer, I guess? You get the occasional moment of “why didn’t I make that jump?” But there’s no “miss the jump, die, restart the level” mechanics, so it’s normally 1-3 jumps that you need to repeat if you fall. I found the platforming elements really forgiving in terms of not punishing you for screwing up.

The second criticism, that the game doesn’t tell you what you need to do, I think is unfair. The direction you need to go in is always the way that feels most intuitive, either because of a path, wall, or just the shape of the terrain. Some of the puzzles need you to stop and think about them, and the game doesn’t hold your hand by going “and do this here, and that there, and then that”.

The game I’d most compare it to is Abzu, but with more Nordic and less ocean vibes. If you’ve played Abzu and enjoyed it, then you’ll probably enjoy Spirit of the North too.

ConstableJelly,

Nice, thanks for the write-up! I will definitely bump this up the list then. Honestly it looks so appealing I think I’ve just been looking for an excuse to give it a shot that outweighed my wariness from the reviews.

frog,

It’s definitely worth a shot. It’s actually a pretty small game: I didn’t rush, and spent 6 hours on it the first time I played (and 16 hours for 100% achievements). So even if you find it’s not for you, it’s a pretty small time investment to find out. :)

Eh, for me, it has story and apparently I can romance people and shoot stuff. So it’s already up there for me. But can totally see how people will feel different. Especially if you felt any hype for this. Me however has had no hype for Bethesda games after fallout 76

What kind of firewall do you have? (Not on the VM, though something similar might work there also)

I use OPNSense and have an allow rule for the specific IP and port my VPN uses from that VM’s IP. Then a block everything from the VM IP after the allow.

I can connect to the VPN no problem, updates and everything work through the VPN. When it goes down it trys to connect normally and fails.

DNS can be a problem when trying to connect to the VPN so make sure to use the IP

RxBrad, (edited ) do gaming w What games have you played due to FOMO?
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

I bought every FromSoft game up to DS3 during various sales because I’d heard unanimously how amazing they were.

Then I eventually played Bloodborne. Haaaaaated it. Never touched any of the other games I bought, and never plan to.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@kbin.social avatar

For what it's worth, I'd say Bloodborne is like Dark Souls but with less variety. There are a bunch of play styles you can utilize in Dark Souls and Elden Ring, but Bloodborne really only lets you use one.

deksesuma,

What did you hate about it? That series is great for the people it clicks with and fans are very vocal about it, so I totally understand.

I went the opposite direction in that it took Bloodborne for the series to click with me. The other games (this was pre DS3) didn’t resonate until after Bloodborne.

RxBrad,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

I guess I sucked at it. I played for 10-12 hours and didn’t beat a single boss. Graveyard Werewolf Dude and Weird Bridge Monster would just wreck me on the rare occasion I could actually make it to them.

After giving up, I learned online that shooting your gun is not actually a range weapon, but it’s meant to parry. Stuff like that – unintuitive mechanics you’d only know about if you were nuts-deep in “the community” – I have little patience for.

And mostly, I’m not playing videogames to prove myself to anyone. I want to have fun – not torture myself.

deksesuma,

All fair criticisms. It’s not for everyone.

I don’t understand why people like Animal Crossing so much as it seems very dull to me, but I can’t hate on anyone for liking it either.

The variety is what makes gaming great.

Cethin,

One thing to know about FromSoft games if you ever try again is they really want you to pay attention. They don’t baby you with telling you what to do, but there are hints all around. For the bird on the bridge you can use fire for a ton of damage (molotovs are dropped by enemies in the area). I’m pretty sure item descriptions tell you, but also it tells you in the environment. In the street going towards that bridge there’s a beast tied to a post that’s being burned, for example.

The games really aren’t that hard (except Sekiro), but they do ask you to participate. You have a lot of options to make them easier though, like using their weaknesses that are normally told to you, or summoning other players, or leveling up, or many other tools.

gaael, do gaming w What games have you played due to FOMO?

Yeah, I’ve got the same thing with playing previous games in the series. This summer I’ve tried playing BG1 and then BG2 prior to BG3’s release - and I did not go very far (did not like the UI).

There’s a site called mangadex that has scanlations translated in many different languages, you can use the filter on advanced search to narrow it down to manga translated to Spanish (ES) or Spanish (Latam)

It’s also quite a good way to learn foreign languages (open up chapters translated to English and other foreign languages and read them like a polyglot book)

ryper, do piracy w How to transfer a save file between pirated game versions.

If you’re playing on Windows, the saves are under your user profile so you shouldn’t need to do anything.

Schmeckinger,

Creating a backup never hurts tho.

7Sea_Sailor,

This is only true sometimes. Some crackers will change the save location for some games, and the location where the save will be stored is entirely dependant on how the cracker has removed or emulated the DRM. I’ve also had the pleasure of the crack-save not being compatible with the genuine-save, meaning I couldn’t transfer my savedata after purchasing a game. Though I don’t know how frequent that is.

I don’t know how it works for this particular Cyberpunk crack.

splendoruranium,

I don’t know how it works for this particular Cyberpunk crack.

Why would there need to be a crack in the first place? Cyberpunk is released DRM-free, isn’t it?

7Sea_Sailor,

Yes and no. If you get the DRM-free GOG release directly, you would not have this problem. Since this person stated they used the DODI repack, they’re now dependant on which release DODI used for his repack, since it may well be a Steam or Epic Games release.

I quickly looked it up, and the repack is based on the InsaneRamZes release, which in turn is based on either GOG or EGS, depending on which forum post you go by. So I’m not 100 % sure what’s actually being used here. According to the PCGamingWiki, there’s no difference in save location between the different stores, so best case scenario, OP can simply update the game to V2 and everything should be picked up.

It’s OK but nothing spectacular. The further you get into it, the more repetitive the missions get though.
