The first was probably Duke Nukem 3D, released January 29th, 1996:

…fandom.com/…/Water_mechanics_in_Duke_Nukem_3D

If you consider their hacky approach to 3D cheating (they didn’t support one part of a level to be above another, and implemented looking up/down by just distorting the image, so all corners were too pointy), then you’d have to wait a few months for Quake.

The first actually 3D first person game was Quake, released June 22nd, 1996, and it let you swim:

Black and white 2 is phenomenal.

Volunteer PR work (including knowingly spreading misinformation) is extremely common for all fanboys, it’s a Nintendo specific thing.

EDIT: I meant to say it’s not a Nintendo only/specific thing. It’s true of all hardcore fanboys, even outside of game.

I’m not that invested in the switch 2 discourse, but always chuckle when someone says “now I can play Zelda at 30 fps or more”.

Paying for a new console, because the last one was incapable of playing games at an acceptable framerate is a weird argument for your purchase.

Some Nintendo games are undoubtedly masterpieces, but that doesn’t excuse some of their business decisions.

StargazingDog,

“now I can play Zelda at 30 fps or more”

Tears of the Kingdom is $115 ($130 with tax) in Canada. To go to bat for Nintendo over the Switch 2 pricing is some sort of Stockholm Syndrome. For reference, the Switch 1 version can currently be bought brand new for $70.

SolidShake,

You could then pay for the “upgrade” (just an fps unlock) for $10

SolidShake,

I’m not a big fan how the “enhanced” versions offer nothing more than just unlocking the frames. Nintendo didn’t remaster these games, they didn’t up the graphics or crank up better lighting. It’s literally just an fps unlock. It only seems better because you from 720p to 1080p making the pixels smaller.

BreakerSwitch,

Don’t forget! If there’s dlc for that game, it’s not included there, either.

“spewing boner misinformation” is absolutely hilarious, what does that mean?

But what is “boner misinformation”? 😂

Black and White 2 is SUCH a great game! I didn’t realise you couldn’t get it on any storefront!!

Is it B&W2 or B&W1 where the game whispers your name if you play it at night?

Yermaw,
  1. That scared the crap out of me as a child. Absolutely no warning that it was coming.

Also its not anywhere because the company that made it doesnt exist any more so technically nobody has the rights to sell it. There’s going to be a lot more legal technicalities than that but that’s basically it.

rayquetzalcoatl,
@rayquetzalcoatl@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, it terrified me too! It was also just one of those things that kind of made it seem like games were magic, in a way? Like, it was so unexpected and it expanded what a game could do in my child mind to such an extent that suddenly they could do almost anything! I miss that.

Ugh, sucks to hear it’s unlisted due to some legal technicalities. That’s a shame.

Saucepain,

I wonder how many obstacles there are to running the CD ROM that OP got? (Apart from my obvious one of not having a cd drive!)

rayquetzalcoatl,
@rayquetzalcoatl@lemmy.world avatar

I’m a total dullard when it comes to these things but like, if you disconnect your machine from the internet so no outside checks can be made… Wouldn’t it just run as usual?

PieMePlenty,

I believe it uses DRM that doesn’t work on newer Windows versions. There’s a fan patch that removes the drm and the game should run. Online (being connected to the internet) is probably not an issue.

rayquetzalcoatl,
@rayquetzalcoatl@lemmy.world avatar

Does DRM work without an internet connection? I always assumed that sort of thing needed to be able to communicate with a server somewhere to check… Something? 😅 Or is it just that the DRM used in this case actually just breaks in an unintentional way when running on new Windows systems and locks the game into not being able to boot?

Saucepain,

If you remember the “glory days” pre ubiquitous constant internet connections, you had to enter a big long code when installing any software. I think the principle is that the license key is some sort of decryption key that unlocks a core part of the software which would otherwise prevent it running.

rayquetzalcoatl,
@rayquetzalcoatl@lemmy.world avatar

I do! I see okay, so it’s like the private key is stored within the ROM somewhere, and that activation code is like a public key that just decrypts based on the locally stored private key, making anti-piracy software work whether online or offline. Quite clever, really! Thanks 😊

dwemthy,

In the first one at least it would whisper “deaaath” if a follower died and there was no graveyard built. Terrified me hearing that the first time playing at night

I was going too, someone suggested the same thing before (in fact, it may have been you because your username is familiar).

But I found out literally the day that i was going to change it that I was put on the sidebar of the community and it uses the posts’s title to search for it. I’m not sure how many people use that as opposed to just letting me naturally show up in their feed so I’m hesitant to mess with it

Omg I owned untold legends when I bought my psp at release. I loved that game but my little brother destroyed my psp like a month after I bought it with my first job. I could never remember the game’s name

Wow that’s amazing. Only like 60% of German rail is electrified, for comparison.
