Steam link for anyone interested:

store.steampowered.com/app/…/Kill_The_Crows/

It’s $4.99 and they have a demo.

I should have included that. I didn’t want anyone to think I was selling them something, I was just moved to talk about this game in the spur of the moment.

SineIraEtStudio,

I getcha. It can be a tough line to walk.

I appreciate bringing the game to my attention though :)

Varying9125, do games w What level of interest do you have in "empire building" location based games?

my understanding is that games like this have to track your location and store that location history for obvious reasons. I think Pokémon go was bought by Saudi Arabia or something like that, and that made me wary. what is your plan for protecting and anonimizing this data, and are you planning to sell it to third parties?

otherwise, I’m a huge fan of games like mindustry on android

Great question, and one I’ve struggled with.

I’m a big privacy advocate, and my personal devices and home network reflect that. Which really brings me to a difficult crossroads here.

I don’t have a good answer for you right now, the best I have are the problems I’m trying to balance:

  • Anticheat: How do detect and build better detection for location spoofing? This, intrinsically, requires the recording of directly associated location data. And the collection of mass anonymized data in order to determine “what looks normal”, to spot abnormal (spoofing) behavior. How can I balance this against privacy concerns? It’s a rough one for sure.
    • This is the toughest one here. Likely I’ll need a combination of data retention periods and anonymization. At the very least sensitive data is separated from the rest of the game data, and is encrypted at rest. Likely there are clever protocols and solutions already out there I just don’t know about yet that can improve protections here.
  • Audit Logs: When a player performs an action that interacts with a location-based feature, where they where when that action was performed it is stored alongside the audit log of that action. This ties in closely with Anticheat, and also enables pattern matching to try and find oddities (exploits, cheating, bugs, and other problems).
    • Right now these stay around forever, and can be used to simulate the global game state at any point in the past (really REALLY useful for debugging problems, especially when you don’t have a good repro). Eventually such state should make granular rollbacks possible in case of exploits or rampant cheating. (A game where you have to physically go somewhere to capture a mine means rollbacks have a crazy high cost, making them granular is pretty important)
  • Analytics and Telemetry: Location data isn’t in use here right now. And I don’t see how it would be while also respecting privacy.

Selling the data: 😂😂😂 I’d rather light my servers on fire than stoop to that level.

It’s not just homework disguised as a game, like Mario Is Missing, is it? 🤔

VitoRobles,

I was an elementary school kid, having a meltdown at my uncle for not getting me Mario Is Missing at Blockbuster. I was crushing a bunch of Mario games thanks to Super Mario All-star + Mario World, and even SM games on the Gameboy.

I think in college, I finally got a chance to play Mario Is Missing.

Yeah, he made the right choice.

I do this thing, where I’ll play a game for 2-5 minutes and then I’ll stop again.

You can bet your ass that I only play games that load and close almost instantly. Well, and basically only games that I’m already familiar with.

ampersandrew, do games w Games have to cost $80! Meanwhile focus £35 oh sure have the DLC for £1 you have the other game
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

Nintendo bets you’ll buy Mario Kart even if it’s $80. Focus bets you won’t buy Roadcraft unless it’s $40.

I loved The Talos Principle! I haven’t played the remake, I didn’t realise they added new stuff I thought it was just updated graphics which didn’t interest me.

The Talos Principle 2 was great, the puzzles were fantastic, some of the new concepts totally broke my brain for ages and had me trying the dumbest stuff because I was fully lost lol but it was so fun! I recommended the DLC too, I loved the Hexahedron in the Isle of the Blessed and I hope they do more puzzles like that in the future.

I just wish the world was smaller and there was less emphasis on the story, when it comes to puzzle games I just want to get to the puzzles asap I don’t want to run back and forth across the world just to sit through cut scenes. I do kind of get why it was so big for the bonus stuff outside the main puzzles and also

Tap for spoileron my first playthrough, I did manage to finish the whole game without completing any puzzles,

which was pretty funny.

I’ve been playing Balatro for what feels like the last 84 years and I constantly rage quit and say I’m done with the game when I know my run is over then stare out the window for a minute and start the game again, its painfully addictive.

I’ve also been playing Angry Birds on the 3DS its so fun. I haven’t played it since it first came out on mobile 15 years ago, I didn’t realise how old it was! I’ve needed games like this for the past few weeks with life being so busy, they’re so easy to pick up and then just pause whenever I need to.

I’m not the guy who can tell from a steam store page whether an indie game is a success or not, so maybe you’re right but I don’t have a dog in that race. I’m more focused on how well they conceived the idea and managed to add nothing that fails to serve their vision.

Just the other day I figured out the Plants vs Zombie fangame has not only a community server ( discord, sadly ), but they also have a demo out! I had an old build using an old engine that has more levels, but I downloaded and played the new demo and it’s amazing so far. Officially called 植物大的僵尸: Universe ( Plants vs Zombies: Universe in English ).

Totally looking forward to the games completion ( assuming neither EA or Talkweb don’t destroy it ) because it’s a very ambitious project trying to take content from, if I remember correctly, pvz1 international, China’s exclusive pvz1 journey to the west edition, 2 international, pvz2 Chinese edition, Online, and the card game ( not 100% sure if I’m right on that one being added ) and rolling it into a single game.

Demo currently gives you Emperor’s Mausoleum from Online and Ancient Egypt (the pvz Online version), with just base levels for now. Minigame side levels, which are present in the old build I have, aren’t currently available in the latest demo they have linked in their discord. As a big enough fan of the non spin-off titles, this makes me very gitty.

Otherwise, more dungeon clawler and that’s about all for non-mobile games. I did try modding Sonic Lost Worlds on PC, but I can’t with my setup.

I go by what I think would look better. Top one being a mine would look better imo, so I would flag it and click the one below it.

    MintyAnt,

    Solid approach. BOOM!!

Pronell, do games w What level of interest do you have in "empire building" location based games?

I’d give it a shot, but I honestly leave my home only once a week, which makes these types of games less appealing to me.

    I almost never travel either.

I’d still play a game that let me use/invest in local resources generously, and unlock more areas with travel.

I’d never be competitive in such a game, but I’m comfortable with that.

I’m interested in playing. I am just so fucking exhausted from all my jobs and the loading screen is where I go through all the stages of grief until I accept i am to tired to do the one thing that brings me joy in life.

Then I go to bed and my daily torture session begin anew.
