Wahots, do games w Cities Skylines 2, Kerbal Space 2, Planet Coaster 2, Frostpunk 2... What Went Wrong?
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Nothing went wrong. Remember the era where every sequel was straight to DVD? Who remembers The Lion King 2? How about Brother Bear 2? Sonic Adventure 2?

It’s difficult to iterate on a piece of media that was written to be a standalone entity.

The only exceptions really are when stories are split into multiple games (such as halo 1-3)

Revan343,

Lion King 2 was pretty good. Also, direct to VHS

Uhh…there was a Brother Bear 2?

Wahots,
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

There was, don’t watch it, it bombed xD

hazeebabee,

100% on everything except including sonic adventure 2 in your list. The chao garden was so great in that one i still go back and play it now and then. And the music to the intro stage is a straight up classic lol

SCmSTR,

I forgot who or what it was who said this, but it was about musicians making albums. The first album they make was made with ideas from their entire lives before that point. The next one they only had a year or a few.

The same could be said for great movies with shit sequels: first movie is a ball of fantastic ideas, anything lesser probably gets taken out… To be put in a crappy sequel. And then the next movie has to come out in only a few years. That just isn’t very much time to read and experience the world and innovate and stuff.

Sure, it happens, but extremely rarely. And when it does, those are the truly special people worth following and giving loyalty to, in any platform or format or product or medium.

Well said!

As someone who loves JRPGs as a genre but has generally grown out of their anime phase, Expedition 33 looks really interesting. I’ve been eyeing it since the announcement trailer and its recent success got me curious. A co-worker told me that it’s just 20-30 hours to beat, which is a huge plus for me (don’t have the patience to clear 100-200 hrs games anymore - looking at you, Persona 5).

I’ll probably get it this summer as soon as I manage to get some free time from work.

PerfectDark,
@PerfectDark@lemmy.world avatar

Funny you mention Persona 5!

Its the one game I’m sucked in to on my CFW Switch at the moment!

BossDj,

Everything but the combat looks amazing to me. The was a Steven universe mobile game that was this same kinda turn based with timed actions. Didn’t really like it. I feel like I’d rather have turn based or real fine. It seems kinda gimmicky. But who knows maybe I’d enjoy it in actual gameplay

I started playing Islets after hearing anout it from your posts, and I really enjoy it! Thank you!

I’m so glad!!!

It’s SO bright and colorful and pretty, and it really is a lovely combination of genres. I think I got it from GOG, maybe it was redeemed on Epic, but I played it a few months ago and fell head over heels for it. Feels perfect on a handheld, too!

Kolanaki, do games w Do you think Square Enix should remake other Final Fantasy entries?
@Kolanaki@pawb.social avatar

I would like 3/6 to get the FF7 treatment, especially since it would be cool to see in 3D.

The other obvious choice to remake that isn’t final fantasy would be Chrono Trigger, but that would just be fucking with perfection.

Couldn’t agree more with your take on Early Access bullshittery. I too refuse to pay for anything that is “released” and described as much. It is just another thing after micro transactions that have further ruined gaming and despite a personal boycott of these practice’s still gets ever more common :(

Tieas, do games w Steam Deck / Gaming News #13

Another great one, I always enjoy reading them.

Since you love underwater settings, you probably know already, but Subnautica 2’s Early Access was announced not long ago. I’ll wait until it’s complete, but given their track record, I feel it’s a game many people will be comfortable buying in EA to give feedback.

So…dev stumbles, fans harass, and the project is dead.

Goodbye Winlator…for now?

Ugh, another amazing one-person project killed by harassment. The internet makes it so trivial to bombard someone with hate-mail, and I doubt many of us have been through the “media training” necessary to deal with it. I only have the tiniest of projects going and if the people I thought I was making a nice thing for suddenly turned on me then I think I’d be saying “fuck it then” too.

In case you’re interested, the guy who made those Minecraft and desert maps also made a “cursed halo” mod that goes along with them, and he’s also a YouTuber. Here’s the link to his channel: Inferno Plus

@MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world avatar

I actually discovered his channel on complete accident a few months ago. The funny part is i had all Cursed Halo, The Desert Map, and the Minecraft ones all installed installed and never realized they were all made by the same guy until i found his channel

tiredofsametab, do games w Do you think Square Enix should remake other Final Fantasy entries?

Nah. I'd rather they make something with the size, scale, mechanics (referring for combat and such but not same abilities, etc.), and storytelling of FFVI. Optionally some fancier graphics and preferably no grinding anywhere.

figjam,

Sweet thanks

Susurrus, do games w Do you think Square Enix should remake other Final Fantasy entries?

Personally I would like to see the whole remaster/remake trend end as soon as possible. Let’s stop selling the same games multiple times, with considerably increased price tag every time.

While some remakes are decent and make sense (e.g. Resident Evil remakes, though even they aren’t perfect), most are just plain money grabs. Remade into a third-person action adventure with RPG elements, if they weren’t already. With generic Unreal graphics, poor optimization, worse or no modding support.

Old games are great, easy to run, and can be bough for pennies. What exactly makes a remake so appealing? Better graphics? No offence to anyone, but I feel like people who care so much about graphics don’t even play games.

I think I’ll continue to ignore the new rereleases, with very rare exceptions, and keep having a blast with the originals. If game companies can’t be bothered to put in the effort and make some new, interesting titles, then I guess they’ll be making zero money from me.

SolarPunker, do games w Do you think Square Enix should remake other Final Fantasy entries?

No. Stop with remakes, remastereds and reboots.
