I installed PPSSPP on my phone and paired a switch joycon. Played through a few really good games that way when my kid required being held to sleep. I’d imagine you could pair one to your computer and find some games that you’d like.

Lonestar if you like or are interested in roguelike deck builders. There are a lot of great games coming out in that genre, here are some others I like:

Balatro

Slay the spire

Bounty of One (not a deck builder, just a roguelike)

Edit: I just realized some of these were already suggested but I’ll leave it

Mini Metro was the first thing that came to mind. Fun little time waster.

Nibodhika,

I have also recently been playing Mini Motorways and found it more fun than Mini Metro (too bad it’s not available on Android, since mini metro is one of my favorite phone games)

Lots of visual novels, maybe you could try Fate?

There is unciv, a foss and free civ 5 adaptation, Humankind which was free for a time on epic games, civ 6 if it’s still on sale, civ 7 if you’re free to trying out new things

RimWorld would be nice but the lack of shortcuts will drive you mad

CK3 isn’t as bad when you lack shortcuts, it’s a fun game

!visualnovels can help you out with way more visual novels. Including ones that do not have sex scenes or romance, counter to the stereotype of all VNs as sex games.

(and if you do want romance in your VNs, but from a female perspective, !otomegames has you)

If you end up liking Crusader Kings 3 you might also like Crusader Kings 2

Just get a bluetooth controller and use the SteamLink app on your phone. It let’s you lounge back and play games just like the steam deck and for way cheaper. I’m actually finding it hard to justify buying a Steam Deck when I have this option.

I’m in the same situation, working 8 hrs at a desk and I can’t join the discord group like I used to during school years. Now I just watch tv on the main monitor and use SteamLink on my phone

prole,

I think if you tried an OLED Steam Deck, you might change your mind. The screen alone is amazing… But also, the fact that it’s a fully functioning Linux device is great as well. So much better than Android.

Yea oled is very nice, it’s what most phones today have too. (Mine included)

It is nice to have a portable computer, but op is asking for playing games and your games can have wayy better graphics if you stream it from a full gaming pc vs compromising quality to have it run on the steamdeck. When you’re just running games on steam there’s not that much more difference between the two.

That’s my secret cap. I’m always exhausted.

The Steam Deck has been a literal lifesaver. Enabling me to play in bed.

Midnitte,

Playing on the couch is a godsend.

MudMan,

Second this. Handhelds are great for adult gaming.

Plus in my case you also tend to gravitate away from more narrative, engaged experiences and towards more mechanics-driven, lighter stuff, which tends to be a good fit for the format, too.

PentastarM,

Thirded. Triced? Anyway, I haven’t gamed in front of a TV or monitor in almost a decade. All of it has been handheld (either 3DS early in those 10 years, or now with either phone or a Retro gaming device of some sort, or a switch, I dont have a steamdeck).

And I haven’t had a long gaming session in almost that same time frame. Games that I can pick up and play for 10s of minutes before I have to go be an adult again are the ones that get played the most.

I usually wake up early before wife and baby, i play for about an hour or so on the weekends but usually by the time I make my coffee and sit at my desk and update they are awake so I mostly just collect steam games that maybe ill pass down to my child.

I did setup steam-headless for a while on my server and I got a razer kishi controller and played games during lunch at work and few times but that kind of fell off. I also got an analogue pocket to play some gba/snes games I’ve been wanting to beat but I mostly only use it when I go camping or something

Well, I don’t have a desk job and I’m on console. So while I can sympathize, I’m not really able to offer advice.

Steam Deck. I can play in bed, or even hook it up to the TV in my living room and play from my couch. I even picked up a wireless keyboard and mouse for that specific purpose.

When I was in my 20’s I had my PC hooked up directly to my TV. Now I have kids and I would rather not have it set up like that, but it may be an option for you.
