bluegreenwookie, do games w Suggestions for a top down game that is genuinely different to all the others?

Idk if it counts but “shady part of me” was an excellent game.

It’s more up and to the side then top down it is a really fun platformer with interesting light mechanics and worth checking out.

Wow, that looks amazing! and 85% off on Steam... Think I'll grab that right now :)

Kenshi. There is really not a single game out there that I can really compare it to and they have a very strong community, showing the game has a high replayability value

smeg, do gaming w A retro gaming handheld console has been amazing for me and I want to recommend it

I’ve seen these devices mentioned quite a bit on Lemmy but I’ve never looked into what they actually are. Is it basically just a small Android tablet with built-in controller? Does it run (x64) PC games or just (arm) Android games and emulators?

cRazi_man,

Android tablet with built-in controller?

Yes

Does it run (x64) PC games

There’s Winlator, but you’ve gotta manage your expectations for the performance you expect for PC games.

(arm) Android games and emulators

Primarily this

smeg,

I’ve not tried Winlator for a year or so, wasn’t really useable but looked like it had a lot of promise. Guessing if you’re successfully emulating Switch games then it’s pretty capable though?

cRazi_man,

I haven’t tried Winlator myself.

Less demanding Switch games work fine. The Retroid Pocket 5 would have better performance and there are videos on youtube with game demonstrations to see performance.

whysteria,

Also gonna mention Postmaster, which supports lots of ARM-Linux handhelds

There’s support for it on the RP5 via Rocknix, which is the successor to the device OP mentioned :)

pory, do games w Should we boycott games with loot boxes?
@pory@lemmy.world avatar

Just not buying something isn’t a boycott. Don’t buy bad games, and it’s a good idea to include dark patterns in the criteria for what makes a game bad.

60d, do games w Suggestions for a top down game that is genuinely different to all the others?

Factorio 🏭

Factorio is a game in which you build and maintain factories. You will be mining resources, researching technologies, building infrastructure, automating production and fighting enemies.

FlembleFabber,

How is this genuinely different?

60d,

That’s a really great question. I will leave it to other people in the comments to answer.

I took OP’s question to mean, “Give me some top-down game suggestions”.

Now that I read it again, I see your point. But also, I can’t think of any of the suggestions in this thread as being unique.

pishadoot,

The game defined the factory builder genre. Everything that followed (Dyson sphere project, satisfactory, shapez, etc etc etc) came after factorio (nicknamed cracktorio because of its addictive qualities) was released.

Gameplay wise it’s a top down with some vehicles and weapons, which is not unique at all, but the core of the gameplay loop was unique and spawned an entire sub genre of build games.

For the akshuallys in the room, it is possible that there were factory line builders before factorio that I’m not aware of, but none had the depth and breadth and definitely none were as popular/iconic.

Cocoon is very different, the worlds inside worlds puzzles are mind-breaking but really fun. Highly recommended!

bjoern_tantau, do gaming w Adult gamers of Lemmy how do you find time to game without being exhausted of the screen?
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

That’s my secret cap. I’m always exhausted.

The Steam Deck has been a literal lifesaver. Enabling me to play in bed.

Midnitte,

Playing on the couch is a godsend.

MudMan,

Second this. Handhelds are great for adult gaming.

Plus in my case you also tend to gravitate away from more narrative, engaged experiences and towards more mechanics-driven, lighter stuff, which tends to be a good fit for the format, too.

PentastarM,

Thirded. Triced? Anyway, I haven’t gamed in front of a TV or monitor in almost a decade. All of it has been handheld (either 3DS early in those 10 years, or now with either phone or a Retro gaming device of some sort, or a switch, I dont have a steamdeck).

And I haven’t had a long gaming session in almost that same time frame. Games that I can pick up and play for 10s of minutes before I have to go be an adult again are the ones that get played the most.

KingOfTheCouch, do gaming w Adult gamers of Lemmy how do you find time to game without being exhausted of the screen?

I watch other people play the games. Then when I’m tired I close my eyes and I have a nap. I can wake up, fully rested and maybe get to see the final boss! Or not. Maybe I just go to bed.

Kissaki,

cRazi_man,

Lemmy is fragmented and I don’t know if posts get visitbility across communities. It seems Lemmy.world gets more engagement and that should be the primary place to post. It’s a shame that cross posts don’t bring everyone to the same commenting area to engage with each other.

technomad, do games w A retro gaming handheld console has been amazing for me and I want to recommend it

I got the RP4 when it came out, and liked it a lot, but it was hurting my hands to play on it for a while.

cRazi_man,

You’re right, ergonomics aren’t great, but I’m fine with that because it prioritises portability. Better ergonomics can be added with the grip attachment. Although I have giant hands and I’m OK playing extended periods without grips.

technomad,

That’s valid, and to each their own of course.

Since Ellipsis hasn’t been mentioned yet, here’s my recommendation:

Ellipsis is an action-packed Avoid ’Em Up with minimalistic, yet powerful neon styled visuals. Guide your ship through a mysterious universe while deftly avoiding hordes of roaming enemies, spikes, lasers and more.

Ellipsis on Steam Store

Purchased My wife a RP5 for Christmas. I could see she’d always wanted to game, but was embarrassed that her controller skills were non existence.

3+ months in, and she’s a button maniac. Her farm in Stardew is insane, and she’s fighting monsters in the caves better than I do.

That little device created a private space for her, to get lost in the magical little world, and in the process has turned her into a gamer.

I never interfered. Only answered her queries when she asked, and let her go at her own pace.

Total game changer. I’m so proud of her.

Can’t wait to get her into some new games, but waiting for her to make the call. All in her own time.

cRazi_man,

I thought it would be perfect for the Mrs, but she’s refused saying she going to end up staying up way too late because she gets addicted to games 😆

The only thing you’ve got to be cautious about is localised save files of you haven’t set up something like syncthing for backup.

Rimworld can be played only with a mouse pretty good. And City Skylines too
