Please give us Galaxy on Linux, GOG, so I can shop with you over Steam.

Buying games on Steams results in development of the Linux technology stack. No other game company funds open source upstream development like Valve. As nice as DRM-free games are, GOG is not a force for Linux advancement.

Epic Games reportedly hit by 189GB hack, including login and payment info (www.rockpapershotgun.com) angielski

The report comes from Cyber Daily, who also broke the news of last year’s confirmed hack attack on Insomniac Games. The site claims that new ransomware group Mogilevich are the culprits, as per the screencap of a darkweb posting above, and that the hackers are now trying to get Epic or another party to pay up for the return of...

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Gosh, what happens to my payment info in such a case?

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

AFAIK rooted Switch consoles are used to decrypt the games and Yuzu just tries to execute whatever nonencrypted Switch binary. Unless Nintendo can prove that either the Yuzu developers themselves are behind ripping commercial Switch games or directly colluded with the rippers, they’d have a hard time to actually win. That said, regular people with normal income levels will probably just sign everything because a prolonged lawsuit is about just bankrupting them, not being ruled the win by the judge.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t give a shit, nor will I ever give a shit

Yes, you do. If you truly didn’t care, you would have no incentive to even comment at all.

Why people care so much is beyond me.

Namco cares. That’s why they had hidden the feature from the launch version.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

I would be a thousand times happier in a world without consoles. Games are published everywhere, and “consoles” are just prepackaged PCs from Microsoft or Sony for people who do not want to build a PC themselves

What do you think current PS and Xbox consoles are? They are all just PC hardware with each a custom OS as differentiating feature. A world in which everything has to run Windows is definitively much worse than the current state.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

PCs more hassle to update and maintain.

That’s Windows, not PCs in general. Steam Deck is an example of a PC system done right where the OS just works and tinkering is optional.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Xbox is Microsoft so that’ll literally never happen.

Microsoft already uses Linux and in fact even develops its own Linux distribution since quite some time because Windows just isn’t good enough for certain tasks: github.com/microsoft/CBL-Mariner

Surface Duo is another Linux-based product by Microsoft.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Surface Duo uses Android though

Android is Linux.

here is no way they’re going to push people to using their competitor on consumer products. They want people to stay on Windows.

Windows Phone is dead, Android is not.

One of the reasons that Steam Deck is better than Windows handheld PCs is because Valve can freely modify the graphics drivers. That’s not possible with the proprietary Windows Radeon drivers.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Yes and no

Only yes. GNU software is irrelevant for anything being Linux (lots of other Linux distributions use no GNU software at all, most notably embedded variants using musl and Busybox). The kernel being a modified one is also irrelevant because almost every distribution ships patches to the kernel. The only person who can revoke Android being Linux is Linus Torvalds, not some random YouTuber named Gary.

Fact is, Microsoft ships Linux-based products and even if it’s highly unlikely what they will switch the Xbox business to release Linux hardware, the outright statement “that’ll literally never happen” is ignorant.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar
woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

And I meant that the majority of “PC maintenance” originates from Windows. Tasks like dust removal from cooling vents isn’t a daily thing (and applies to consoles just the same).

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

True, but if I’m spending thousands on a machine, I tend to want to be able to do other things on it so unfortunately Windows usually enters the equation.

Then it’s still Windows maintenance, not PC maintenance. For Intel and AMD GPUs, any regular convenience Linux distribution (like Fedora) works with negligible maintenance. It’s only those NVidia users or people who feel the urge to tweak everything steer themselves into maintenance hell.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Surely you still have to update drivers and OS?!

Drivers are part of the OS and OS updates happen everywhere. Game consoles or Steam Deck are no exceptions.

Where's Our Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Review? (IGN denied review code) (www.ign.com) angielski

In a bad-vibes moment, they’re denying a huge outlet like IGN a review code. No matter what I think of IGN in particular (nothing good tbh), that’s not something I can find a real explanation for other than “We made DC’s Gollum and want to avoid bad press as long as we can”.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve read somewhere else a couple of days ago that the official explanation is that without the public servers being live, reviewers would not get the full experience.

Not defending WB (I’m not interested in that game at all), just giving context.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Well, now they’ll be reviewing a fully Denuvo’ed copy, so the version actual buyers get to play.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Honest question: how did you manage to find out about Lemmy and sign up on a Lemmy server and not know what Steam is and how to play Steam games?

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

At least it’s out already. Doesn’t help anyone if a game is in Early Access development hell forever.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

All the “it’s not yet polished because it’s Early Access but it’ll be great on release” apologists are silenced.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Now also make it illegal to sell physical copies of games that need day 0 patches/downloads to make them work.

“Sorry customers, we’re no longer selling physical releases. Court mandated that, our hands are tied.”

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Why is steam the only acceptable DRM?

Because it’s optional and if opted in, works offline.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve been boycotting Ubisoft for years, haven’t missed a damn thing.

Yeah, there are so many great games by non-shitty developers. Skipping Ubisoft, EA, and Activision entirely is not only possible but there are more great games left than one can play anyway.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

The moment I heard the new Prince of Persia had Denuvo, I wasn’t going to play it anyway.

It mandates a Ubisoft account everywhere anyway. Apparently on Switch in airplane more is the only way to circumvent this.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

If it’s denuvoed you’ll have to wait for the crazy bigot Empress to crack it. Could be a while.

30 seconds of googling revealed that someone already packaged the Switch version for PC with a preconfigured emulator.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Plus it works so smoothly I never even think of it as DRM

AFAIK SteamWorks DRM is something developers have to actively implement in their games. From what I understand, by default Steam is merely a delivery system without DRM.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

CSGO? No, Valve does not care for a game that was repalced with CS2.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

If Microsoft gives them a cut maybe.

But only for MS first party games. 3rd party games surely have to go through PS Plus if they want other terms than just buying games.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

But also, screw gamepass and the subscription model overall.

If GamePass meant “you just get everything”, I see a case for that but GamePass isn’t that. It’s “Here are a few Microsoft 1st party games scoring 7/10 other games cycle in and out like Netflix and you get no DLC so when you buy DLC and the game cycles out, you’re out of luck”

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

They got Relic to make a surprsiingly faithful Age of Empires, people do like Microsoft Flight Sim, that type of thing.

“Their biggest games have been IP conceived and developed externally” so not really a counter argument to phillaholic when you mention two games outsourced to external developers.

woelkchen, (edited )
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Sega fired a bunch of people at Relic this year, like everybody else, so what would have been better is very much up for debate.

Microsoft shut down the entire Ensemble studio, the original creator of AoE. Internal game development at Microsoft is bad.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Looks like Microsoft is now entirely focusing on selling games rather than selling Xbox.

If that were true, they would have discontinued Xbox already. You are falling for their lie that they aren’t trying to lock people into a closed ecosystem.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Ever since Super Mario Bros. 3 it’s confirmed that it’s all a stage play and repeated over and over again, so it’s not been a one-off. They play the same or similar roles in otherwise disconnected plays / movies.

Super Mario Bros 3: Curtain raises and the levels are just stage sets. www.youtube.com/watch?v=seZM0HHPIdo

Super Mario All-Stars: The gang hangs around at a party www.youtube.com/watch?v=tySdQ1l_hGM

Paper Mario: Same curtain thing going on as in SMB3 and at battles you can even see the audience www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmUtCTtFA4U

I’m with you. The fidelity of current Mortal Kombat games is not my cup of tea either.

They’re partially owned by Tencent, a big Chinese company. And as Chinese companies are, the government has direct influence over them. And while Tencent is not a majority owner, Tim Sweeney happily took Chinese money and now pays his co-owner a portion of the profits which then go to pay for Chinese gulags.

There are many things, especially hardware, where it’s impossible to avoid Chinese companies but simply buying games somewhere else is super easy. It’s obviously not a perfect system because even on GOG there are games using UE, but just buying games somewhere else is such a low barrier, it’s not an inconvenience at all.

That said, claiming the free games doesn’t help them. It helps the developers making those games because Epic has to pay them and won’t get anything in return if that doesn’t result in users leaving money in EGS for other things.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

It’s so destructive that even China doesn’t like it

They probably love that it’s hurting competing nations, though.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Tencent is a Chinese company

Yes and the new rules apply to the Chinese domestic market. Tencent is free to do harm western teens.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

What makes you think I ever claimed otherwise. In fact I find your replies to me rather confusing.

Baldur's Gate 3 'Isn't Going to be on Game Pass', Insists Larian Boss (www.ign.com) angielski

In a new interview with IGN, Larian Studios boss Swen Vincke responded to questions about Baldur's Gate 3 being on Xbox Game Pass, explaining why the best RPG of 2023 won't be on Microsoft's subscription service anytime soon.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

That’s unfortunate.

Nah, it’s expected. BG3 doesn’t fit in a service for 7/10 games.

Any place I can try a demo?

Get it on Steam, try it for up for 2 hours, and return it if you don’t like it. That’s possible since years.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

apparently is downvote worthy that I am a bit poor at the moment.

Nah, you didn’t mention anything related to you only being able to afford gaming via GamePass in your current situation, so it can’t be that. Maybe your comment just didn’t jive with people on its own merit, completely unrelated to your financial situation. (I don’t have any particular feelings about your comment in either direction, so I’m just speculating.)

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

I can’t believe Nintendo hasn’t taken it down yet

“So I report about it on PC Gamer and make Nintendo aware of it.”

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

You can claim the freebies on the website from any web browser.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Under normal circumstances it’ll never happen because it’s not a regular 1 year exclusivity deal, it’s Epic being the publisher.

It’s more likely to have its console versions emulated before landing on Steam. And even if Epic puts the game on Steam, Epic will still get the money.

Recommend a game for me to play with my partner angielski

My partner and I occasionally play games together, but they pretty much only play word puzzle games on their own. I’m not very good at word games though, and they don’t have very good spatial skills, so we frequently find ourselves mismatched. We have a switch and a single decent gaming pc, and a pretty old laptop....

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

As a non-native speaker I still struggle with it. Just sounds like plural all the time. I’d expect something like “they does” for an individual and “they do” for a group of people but “they do” for just an individual frequently fucks up my comprehension.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Try Handshakes. It’s 100% free. store.steampowered.com/app/2171690/Handshakes/

Officially it has no coop mode but because the game just accepts input from all input devices, one person can control the right hand and the other the left hand. No time limit, infinite retries. It’s a short game but you that’s really not a problem with a price tag of free.

woelkchen,
@woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

Platform parity, baby. It’ll have to run on Xbox Series S.

google isn’t the only company selling android phones.

Other Android OEMs are allowed to ship whatever store they want in addition to Google Play. The Epic Games Store is on the Samsung Galaxy Store: galaxystore.samsung.com/…/com.epicgames.portal
