Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of June 29th

What have y’all been playing? I’ve been playing the shit out of death stranding 2. Really really good. It’s a no brainer if you liked the first. If you didn’t, you may like this one as it has a lot of qol and combat improvements this time round but it still is death stranding at its core

@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Tails of Iron. I’m having a blast with it. The voice actor that did Geralt’s voice as the narrator is a lot of fun. Combat feels good. Only complaints are the side quests (optional) can be a little repetitive, but worth it if you want new gear. And the jumping/ledge-grabbing mechanic feels a bit imprecise. Overall a fun game so far.

@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

You vote with your wallet. Look at all the cons you listed and think if you really want to support that. Do you want to tell Nintendo that this is ok, and you’ll pay the high price for it?

Have you looked at a Steam deck, or any other alternative like a regular laptop? You can run way more games, including emulating Nintendo games.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

So this is what I’ve been doing, but I always end up spending hours configuring the emulators, the shaders, everything… and then not playing that much! That’s why I was talking about the “plug and play” nature of game consoles (even though it’s less true now that you have to create an account and stuff like that).

Simple solution: don’t do that. Are you trying to game with your family, or force them to watch you tinker? I’ve encountered ONE game where I had to adjust a setting in the emulator to make it playable. And occasionally adjust input mapping when it gets wonky or doesn’t handle the way I want, usually N64 emulation because of those pesky C buttons. Never had a problem with Steam games using an Xbox controller or third party controller (8BitDo Ultimate 2C with hall effect sticks and triggers, $30). They are plug and play.

As for PC games, I never have the proper hardware to play in good conditions.

Well, not yet you haven’t. But you’re prepared to drop $700 on a Switch 2? And $100 per game? You can get a laptop or pre-built PC for the same or less that’s capable of playing most games. Some newer games with intense graphics will have high demands for specs, you might have to turn down graphics quality for those, but there are thousands of games that can run on a bare minimum consumer-grade computer.

Again, the “plug and play” nature of game consoles is appealing. A game you buy for a given console is working fine out of the box.

Every one of my Steam games is working fine out of the box. You said you like to tinker, but you also don’t want to tinker. Wouldn’t you prefer to have the option? Besides that, PC gaming is virtually plug and play. Install Steam. Plug in a controller. Plug HDMI into the TV. Same number of steps to connect the Switch 2 to a TV.

I really think you should do more research on PC gaming before writing it off, and especially before giving Nintendo more money.

Didn’t go too overboard since I have a lot of other unplayed games and money is tight. But I picked these up:

  • Sapo 3D (3D Platformer)
  • ATLYSS (Action RPG)
  • Lunacid (Dungeon Crawler)
  • Kaze and the Wild Masks (2D Platformer)
  • Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy (3D Platformer)
  • Anodyne (Action Adventure)
eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Nice taste, similar to mine. I just picked up Sapo 3D. Played Pseudoregalia recently and loved it.

I suggest you take a look at Cavern of Dreams and Frogun.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

So many frog games with Kero Quest 64 too!

Lol yes. Already on my Wishlist!

Frogs are what peak 3D platformer performance looks like.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Alwa’s Awakening

The Messenger

Ori and the Blind Forest

Pseudoregalia

I like the feeling of getting stronger and coming back to previously inaccessible places. Pretty much only play games on Steam.

I’m surprised I haven’t seen anyone mention Hollow Knight yet. I won’t claim it on my list since I haven’t finished it yet, but it seems to be popular.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Started my first playthrough of Sekiro and it’s really hard. I’m slowly embracing the playstyle, but I have so many habits to break from the other Souls games. I like it, but I don’t think I’ll be up for NG+ if I ever finish the NG run.

Also started playing Sable and I really like it so far. It kind of feels like an open world Zelda type of game without combat. It’s quite relaxing, and the art style is absolutely beautiful.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Do you know how to do the lightning reversal?

I think so in theory. I acquired it, but haven’t found anyone using lightning yet. LB to parry/absorb, RB to unleash it?

Have not made it past Genichiro phase 1 yet so I went elsewhere looking for powerups. I beat Juzou first try, but the long arm centipede man took hours, a lot like every other boss and mini boss lol.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

I appreciate that they wanted to make it better, but honestly I don’t think most of the enhancements are what was “wrong” with the game (a map is very welcome, though). And they added another currency?

I wanted to like the original more than I did, and I’m ok with it staying in my memory as a 6/10. Probably won’t buy the full version, but might try the demo just to see. Would have rather seen a new game from them instead.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

There were some good times in it for sure. If I was a kid and experienced it like SM64 and Banjo Kazooie I’m sure I’d rate it higher than 6/10 and have less complaints. Overall it just feels tedious in comparison to those classics despite having a really cool moveset. Like I mentioned, I’d rather they made a new game than remake this, I’ll still play new games they put out.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

There was another game that came out the same year (2017) called A Hat in Time. I recommend checking that out if you’re even lukewarm on 3D platformers.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Remnant 2. I have no idea what’s going on, but I’m having a good time. The systems are pretty complex and unexplained so I just equip things that seem cool. So far so good! Thanks to other players joining my game I’ve been able to solve the puzzles, which honestly I would have had to lookup solutions for if I were only playing solo.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Pseudoregalia. I wish there were more boss fights because I thought they were well done, but still a great experience overall.

Elden Ring, just a new run because it’s been a while.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

I have faith that, with this and Duskbloods, they’re taking online play more seriously. But still I’m with you in waiting for reviews to confirm that’s the case before considering buying it. Network test existing doesn’t tell us anything about how the final product performs until the final product is released.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

My Ultimate 2C is being delivered today and I’m very excited.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Mine arrived and I am pleased with how quality it feels.

D-pad is better than I expected. No more stick drift. Cost half as much as an Xbox controller. You can’t go wrong.

I'm bored and desperately search for a proper game angielski

So, I’ve spent over 2 hours on Steam searching for a nice game to play. But it’s all junk, as far as I’m fed with Steam recommendations. I liked ksp2 1, cities skylines 1, age of empires 2, baldurs gate 3 a lot, I just finished Divinity original sin 2. I like rpgs and management / factory games like workers and resources,...

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Check out Dome Keeper. Mine resources to buy upgrades and protect your dome from waves of aliens. There are lots of game modes and modifiers to get different experiences each run.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Great post/format. It feels like I’m a kid reading the gaming news magazines at the grocery store again.

I’ve been playing Ori and the Will of the Wisps. I like it and the changes they made since Blind Forest, but I’m also feeling frustrated by repeatedly getting lost, even with quest markers. It’s tiring to waste so much time traversing the map just to find out I have to go back… somewhere else. Never had this problem when playing Blind Forest.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Dark Souls 2, again. I’m helping a new player and the really bad co-op mechanics might be enough to push me to try out some mods like seamless co-op and the lighting engine which looks gorgeous.

Dome Keeper. I didn’t realize it was made in Godot which is neat and encouraging to see. I really like the gameplay loop and graphics and look forward to unlocking more things to shake it up.

New Super Lucky’s Tale. The burrow mechanic was pretty fun. While the game wasn’t very challenging it was still a good playthrough and visually strong. The best part was the bonus world at the end where you really get to let the abilities rip, especially in combat. I wish there were more enemies around in the rest of the game because the way you can chain together attacks and create a “flow” was fun and seriously under-utilized.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

I just finished my first playthrough of Half-Life and wish I had known about this alternate version, it looks great. Thanks for the write up.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

It absolutely brought me back to the late 90s shooters I grew up with. Lots of fun, but there were also a lot of parts I got stuck on, too. I will need some time before I play again / consider the BM version - maybe after HL2. Thanks for the additional info.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

3D platformers, my beloved.

Thanks for sharing and giving some things to look forward to.

Your all-time favorite game? Let's discuss the best options! angielski

I feel like my “all-time favorite” changes depending on my mood, but if I had to pick just one, I’d probably go with The Witcher 3. That game just hit all the right notes—amazing story, incredible world-building, and so much stuff to do without feeling like pointless filler. Plus, the expansions were just as good, if not...

@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

It’s easily The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

It has everything I could ask for in a game: Sword fighting. Magic. Secrets. Dungeon crawling. An alternate dimension. Side quests. Different tools and items. There’s enough content that it feels fulfilling to complete it. Peak art. Peak music. NPCs don’t talk too much, and there are just enough of them to make the world feel alive. Bosses.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Unfortunately not. Is it only available on the 3DS?

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Kill Knight

Demon’s Souls

The Last Campfire

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

From the main games I have played Red/Blue/Yellow, Gold/Silver, and Emerald. I think they are all pretty close in terms of favourite, but I’ll say Blue because it was my first and had a huge impact. I remember battling other people using a link cable at school.

I think those games all have the same problem. The battle system is too slow by today’s standards. Random encounters can get annoying (thanks, ZUBAT!). It’s not just exclusive to Pokemon. Other series of the time haven’t aged as well for the same reasons. Back then it didn’t matter though.

Pokemon Stadium deserves an honourable mention. Seeing the Pokemon animated in 3D was amazing at the time. The mini-games and the gameboy pack that connected to the N64 controller were great too.

Pokemon Snap - meh. It was the type of game you play at the demo booth while waiting for your parents to finish shopping.

Pokemon Trading Card Game - the gameboy game and the physical card game were both peak. I feel like the gameboy game was slept on by many, but I loved it.

There is definitely a nostalgia factor, and I was into playing the TCG with the actual cards too, so that helps. It’s been a long time so I’m not sure if it would still hold up.

Emulating PS2 for my Steam Deck, would love any recommendations! (lemmy.world) angielski

I’ve been sinking further and further into the RetroDECK time-sink of setting up my emulators just so, and having the most fun doing so. The PS2 is a largely unknown system to me, I neither had one nor spent much time before now playing through some titles....

-Dark Cloud (1 and 2)

-Time Splitters 2

-Red Faction

-Grandia 2

-ICO and Shadow of the Colossus

-Shinobi

-Twisted Metal Black

-Ape Escape (2 and 3)

-Armored Core 2

-Dead or Alive 2

-Gran Turismo 3

-Final Fantasy X

-Grand Theft Auto III / Vice City / San Andreas

-Midnight Club Street Racing

-Soul Calibur 2

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

What’s wrong with it? I enjoyed playing it on PS2.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Ah ok. I didn’t notice if there was an issue when I was a kid playing it - too busy being enamoured with the battle system!

Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of January 20th

Three day weekend … Messed up my schedule. Oh well, what have you been playing? I’ve been checking out a ton of cool playdate stuff, as well as more binding of Isaac. I also picked up a game called the roottrees are dead that I’m excited to check out! It seems like a game similar to case of the golden idol which is one of...

Alwa’s Awakening

It was challenging, but fun. Looking forward to playing Alwa’s Legacy soon which apparently made some improvements.

This makes me want to hear the “Quad City DJs - Space Jam” theme sung by Eddie Vedder

Tunic

Just finished my first playthrough and I’m in love. Play Tunic.

Also check out the Blossom Tales games. I have not played yet, but I got Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King because of how Zelda-like it looks.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

No, I think you’re all good. That part scared me too.

Remember to check the instruction manual for clues.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

It’s still unclear to me if you are always a trio.

Is “solo” you + 2 bots?

Can you play as 2 friends + 1 bot or 1 random player?

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

TUNIC.

My goodness this game feels like it was made for me. I feel the magic of Zelda (LttP, maybe Link’s Awakening) and Dark Souls, and I would say the game wears those influences on its sleeve.

The game drops you into the world with no explanation. Signs are in a foreign language. You can collect pieces of the instruction manual which includes map pieces. The manual is littered with the occasional word in English, just enough to guess at what you can / need to do. There’s basically no hand-holding at all. Combat is similar in that it can be difficult if you find yourself in an area you aren’t ready for yet (like I did).

There are lots of hidden pathways, ladders and chests to find. They do a good job of showing you treasure chests and shortcuts that are just out of reach, and you have to really observe and think about how to navigate to get there. To me the world design has big Dark Souls 1 energy in that way - already I’ve had that same “omg it’s Firelink Shrine?!” experience as I explore and open up paths.

Is there any (single player playable) game with $10 which has made you point any go "haha" or given you an equivalent feeling because it was that enjoyable for every moment you played it? angielski

This is a very strict bar with a limiting price requirement. As for the title of the post, I fully mean giving the enjoyable feeling 100% of the time. Put forth the niche games which do this, because I do not know of any popular AAA or popular/fairly big developer indie which does this. The game must be playable for 100 hours at...

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

The 100 hour mark is a tough one to hit - even some of the best games I’ve played aren’t that long or replayable, and the ones that are usually cost more than $10. Still, here are some to check out if you want. I’ll list the price on Steam in Canadian dollars and my current total play time.

  • The Messenger - on sale for $5.19 - 35 hours
  • Infinitode 2 - Free to play - 47 hours
  • Ori and the Blind Forest - on sale for $6.24 - 23 hours
  • Risk of Rain 2 - on sale for $9.56 - 81 hours (new to my library, less than 1 month)
  • Undertale - on sale for $2.74 - 28 hours
eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

I’ve heard about that and through multiplayer have been able to experience it. Honestly I prefer the base game without either DLC. Even the Void DLC is too chaotic for my taste.

eezeebee,
@eezeebee@lemmy.ca avatar

Graphics have never been a priority for me, they’re more like an inevitable side effect of technology advancing. Luckily there is no shortage of good old games, and a lot of smaller studios are making amazing titles with older art styles / less demanding specs.

Dying Is a Form of Education - On Elden Ring (warning: a major spoiler in the middle of the essay) (harpers.org)

Much has been made of the difficulty of these games—it has been criticized as exclusionary, lauded as a return to gaming’s roots, used as a selling point. (prepare to die, declared the slogan of the first Dark Souls.) But “difficulty” is an elusive concept, one word standing in for a number of ways in which a game can...
