acastcandream,

Crunch culture stories are horrifying to read

acastcandream,

I was considering making the jump from film and television to the video game industry until a year or two ago. I am really passionate about video games, and I really think there’s a lane for me. Unfortunately, after reading so many horrible stories about crunch culture and learning just how demanding the industry can be (even as somebody who worked on some pretty grueling Hollywood sets) I decided not to go that route. It still makes me upset to think about. I just feel like the industry is so terrible it’d be irresponsible and unfair to my family to go down that route. Reading Significant Zero really put the last nail in the coffin for me on that dream, even though it wasn’t the intention of the book.

acastcandream,

Those underwater scenes in Inside created a sense of awe and dread I haven’t felt in years tbh

acastcandream,

I’m not sure where you’re reading that because literally every review makes at least some mention to the occasional bugs/jank they’ve encountered but that it’s hardly enough to spoil the game.

acastcandream,

Death is inconsequential for your party. Withers or scroll of revivify solves 99% of your problems. If it’s that important to never die than just save scum because your enjoyment is the most important factor when deciding how to play a game.

No matter what you do, the point is getting insta-gibbed is not some common thing and is easily fixable.

acastcandream, (edited )

Shove absolutely does not move you 6+ meters.

Edit: shove is 1.5m with higher strength increasing it to a maximum of 4m.

acastcandream,

I think with people mean is “real bugs.” The bugs the game has are very expected and, by all accounts, not game breaking. Meanwhile AAA studios drop content at launch, charge for everything after you’ve bought it, and have game breaking bugs that force you to restart regularly or sometimes ruin your games. I mean come on, look what happened with. Halo: Infinite and Redfall. It wasn’t goofy animations and such.

No game is truly “bug free.” It’s a catchall term to say “I can play this game from start to finish without any particularly memorable issues.”

acastcandream,

I play a sorcerer gnome with STR 8 and I have never been shoved 6m lol

acastcandream,

In the AAA game space, yeah, that’s pretty standard fair. I bet you not a single game has launched, well polished or otherwise, that didn’t squash upwards of 1000 bugs in the first few months.

acastcandream,

Oh come on

acastcandream,

I would say an enemy shoves one of my characters every seven or eight fights. It’s pretty uncommon.

acastcandream, (edited )

Microsoft should make all of their Microsoft studio games available that they no longer want to host, but they can’t force other studios to do the same anymore than Valve can force studios to do a sale/give away games on steam.

acastcandream,

Oh no doubt. Believe me I have no sympathy for M$. I’m just reiterating the fact that it’s not as simple as it sounds, even if it’s because of their own decisions lol

acastcandream,

The list of backwards compatible 360 games is pretty lengthy but it is not 100% covered

PlayStation’s first Remote Play dedicated device, PlayStation Portal remote player, to launch later this year at $199.99 (blog.playstation.com) angielski

PlayStation Portal remote player brings the PS5 experience to the palm of your hand. It includes the key features of the DualSense wireless controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback*. The vibrant 8-inch LCD screen is capable of 1080p resolution at 60fps, providing a high definition visual experience that’s...

acastcandream,

This thing has the haptics. Your phone will at most have rumble. Not saying that’s a $200 issue worth solving lol but it is all the haptics of the controller as well as a remote player. If it also has virtually no latency then maybe I’d consider it. But I have never seen a device besides the Wii-U tablet pull that off.

acastcandream,

Oh i know the range isn’t great but it’s easily good enough for you to play, for instance, in your bed or somewhere comfy. I was just speaking to latency.

acastcandream,

I think streaming is going to have a seismic impact on the industry eventually and frankly, I would like to see it broken up sooner rather than later. That being said, I do not want Ubisoft to be one of those services lol

acastcandream,

That’s why I definitely did not put a specific date on it. It will take several years. But remember, Netflix was in the same boat at one point. Now we can stream on virtually anything anywhere.

acastcandream,

Exo-Primal. Seriously it is really, really fun. But the tutorial is awful. It’s so slow-paced and then it takes a few hours of playing to really have the game show you what it is. By hour 7 or so though i was hooked and it’s just kept delivering.

acastcandream,

Once again begs the question why Nintendo shuts their stores down far sooner and makes it so you can’t re-download your old purchases, other than greed/laziness.

acastcandream,

You can redownload your purchases on discontinued Nintendo platforms.

You know, I thought you couldn’t on the Wii anymore, but apparently you can…? It’s unclear to me but seems I may have been mistaken when I said you can’t. TIL.

acastcandream,

Not all games are BC so a lot of the library won’t be accessible, just to be clear.

acastcandream,

There’s 1 good BG3 one for those who checked like I did lol

The Steam Deck is changing how normies think of gaming PCs.

Just thought I’d share something I thought was pretty interesting. I have a mother in law who is… well let’s just say she’s a stereotypical older mom who doesn’t own a computer, just an iPad. During the pandemic, she started getting into Nintendo games and bought herself a Switch. Fast forward a few years later and...

acastcandream,

NPC’s is worse to be honest. It’s generally used to attack people’s social/political values and call them “sheeple” without using the term. Normie is gross but it’s mainly just dismissive and having too high an opinion of one’s own taste/interests.

Ultimately it’s cringe as hell to say either lol

acastcandream, (edited )

Meh cringe can be effective as a descriptor, but it’s cringe to call people cringe as a personal attack. I’ve described situations as very “cringe-inducing.”

acastcandream,

“Classical liberal.”

The most absurd thing I’ve seen conservatives in the US try to co-opt.

acastcandream,

Most definitely. I’m more distinguishing it from calling someone an NPC, which has no valid use other than to dismiss or denigrate.

acastcandream,

Because statements like “… Isn’t about graphics or frame rate; it’s memory” don’t make sense at all.

I get what you’re saying but it does make sense actually. The Series S has incredibly under-powered memory which has hobbled a lot of developers thus far. It’s the core reason why they can’t get split-screen working right yet. Framerate/graphics are more associated with GPU performance, which is not as big of an issue for the S. Everything bottlenecks on the very small, very weak memory they provided.

Fan Ports PlayStation Classic [WipeOut], Dares Sony To Shut Him Down And Make Its Own (kotaku.com)

WipeOut was Sony’s initial first-party exclusive for the original PlayStation when it launched back in 1995. The anti-gravity racing game was phenomenal. Now it’s abandoned. So one dedicated programmer took it upon himself to excavate the game’s leaked source code and make it playable for free in any web browser....

acastcandream,

Everyone’s a badass until the C&D’s start.

acastcandream, (edited )

I have a series S and even I think it’s unreasonable to expect full parity with a PS5/XSX after three or four years. It’s a $300 piece of hardware - it is remarkable what it does at its price point. It will be useful for a good 10 years, but it will not be able to keep up with new games after 5 at most in my opinion. It’ll be great for Indies or back catalogs.

They need to stop trying to make it functionally a series X and focus more on making it a gamepass/xcloud machine. As it is, it’s just an albatross around their neck.

Edit: Everything signaled that they were going to make it into a xcloud machine essentially. I’m not sure why they haven’t really pushed that harder.

acastcandream,

It’s going great for me as the consumer with Game Pass. I have had over two years of essentially free games, because Microsoft rewards is too generous and easy to exploit. But I have no illusions about whether or not this consolidation is good for the industry. It simply isn’t. Yeah I guess y’all can call me out or whatever for using it anyway, but the series S with nearly free GamePass has just been too good for me as a dad with a full-time job and children. I’m still against the merger lol

I vote with my dollar where I can, but sorry, sometimes I make compromises just like anybody else. That being said, if I have to start actually paying for it, even at the current price, I’m out. So basically it depends on when they decide they don’t want rewards to stay around.

acastcandream, (edited )

At some point, it’s on you to know what your machine can and can’t handle. They put big letters on the front of each game telling you if it’s able to play on the series X and series S. It is right there lol.

Also, with smart delivery, it would probably be trivial for Microsoft to have a modal pop up saying “this game is not optimized for series S and will not play, do you still want to purchase?”

No, the real issue here is developers (not their fault mind you). The moment Microsoft says “you don’t have to make it playable on the S,“ they simply won’t. Because why would you?

acastcandream,

Some people can be pretty dogmatic about this stuff but yeah, I feel like it’s better than cash. Especially because the stuff I do for rewards gives them pretty useless data and I have all kinds of privacy stuff running in the background protecting my data

acastcandream,

I feel like I made it pretty clear that I understand it’s going great right now specifically.

acastcandream,

Why would they completely abandon Xbox just because the series S won’t be required?

acastcandream,

As I said in another comment, I own a series S, and I think it’s pretty ridiculous of me to expect a $300 piece of hardware to be able to play the latest games past five years. Even with what they have said, I just kind of assumed it can’t be true.

I imagine in two or three years I will switch to dev mode and boot retro arch on it.

acastcandream,

Hell it runs on a steam deck

acastcandream, (edited )

Yes we know. The comment at the top of this chain is talking about whether or not Microsoft could stop allowing that requirement and the potential blowback. Scroll to the top and start from the beginning you’ll see.

acastcandream,

How is it any different than the number of games coming out that betray all the things they promised?

As a series S owner, I never expected this thing to be able to play modern AAA games for 7-10 years like previous gens. It’s delusional. It was $300 with a controller ffs lol

acastcandream, (edited )

We know microsoft’s current policy. It’s obvious we do. Please stop this and discuss the topic at hand or move on.

acastcandream,

Hey I get consistent 1440p and decent upscaled 4k! lol

acastcandream,

Are you really not comprehending what I said?

I guess not and frankly I just don’t feel like speaking further with you given the completely needless hostility over what is likely just our talking at cross purposes. Have a good one.

acastcandream,

sorry if it felt hostile.

It did because it was. Are you really not comprehending what I said?

This is “I’m sorry you feel that way” patronizing nonsense man.

acastcandream,

It’s also a rare example of where a massive budget without restrictions (relatively speaking) can lead to amazing results.

Usually one of two things happens: the publisher is tired of dumping money into a project then force it to market too early, or scope creep happens and the developers bite off way more than they can chew and there’s nothing they can do past a certain point.

Larian managed to dodge both of these bullets. Not by luck, of course. But they dodged them nonetheless.

acastcandream,

or indeed hundreds of great selling AAA single player games?

It’s important to note that the amount of single player AAA games has greatly diminished overtime. Most of those “hundreds” you’re referring to are not in the last 10 years, and the big bucks have been in live service. So yeah BG3 did great but it was a huge, 6+ year gamble ultimately. I WANT those gambles, but businesses would rather push out cheaper games at a faster clip because they make money. People still buy them and they still pay for DLC/MTX like crazy. It’s hard to compete against that.

Player stats for the first weekend of Baldur's Gate 3 (store.steampowered.com) angielski

We’ve cooked up some statistics highlighting data from the opening weekend following launch and prepared a handy infographic outlining player choices, actions, deaths, and the like. Some inspiration as we head into our second weekend, if you will.

acastcandream,

I have a halfling barbarian on my buddy’s that is so much fucking fun

acastcandream, (edited )

Pshhh I see Faerun has bigots as well

Jokes aside, as a halfling my friends can chuck me. Which has actually been useful! Also halfling luck (re-roll on crit fails)
