Have to relate to this somewhat, it’s hard to find time or interest to practice fighting games with all the accumulated responsibilities of being responsible adult and a parent. While boomer reaction time checks are one thing, the bigger problem is having to practice against multiple different matchups in 3-4 different games. Probably should play these online a lot more, currently mostly playing on locals few hours once a week.
One does not even need to review bomb as a single update can easily ruin a game. After that it’s no longer comparable to the game one was playing for possibly thousands of hours.
Switch 2 had a wider selection, with 13 physical games available at launch.
Many gamers do not count game key-cards as physical games. Just another version of code in a box. Cyberpunk is probably only actual physical 3rd party release on switch.
A lot of players and local venues prefer PS4, PS5 and PC for fighting games. If you have licensed PS4/PS5 arcade stick it should work on all three of these platforms. Unlicensed ones might not work with PS5 games. Switch is mostly just for melee.
That being said game key-cards seem largely inferior to physical versions on other platforms even if you likely have to patch most games these days anyways.

Not just Pokemon, I am sure there are many who where hoping for Switch Pro before Nintendo crushed their hopes and dreams with Switch OLED. People have been testing Switch 1 games on Switch 2 and most of them seem to run on very stable frame-rate on Switch even without an upgrade pack.
This will lead to stronger console sales but not necessarily to game sales at least not in the short run.
Aside from the analog sticks, the console itself seems like a fine upgrade from the original making it a tempting for anyone looking for “Switch Pro”. But it’ll be intersting to see how the price of games and the digital key aspect will affect the game sales down the line.
Steam Deck and other portable pc:s seem to be also getting a lot of momentum so there’s increasing amount of competition for handheld devices which was not really the chase with Switch 1.
Not yet, but availability of steam decks and other pc handhelds is improving rapidly. Valve also just recently allowed other manufacturers like Lenovo to produce their own devices.
PC gaming is currently overshadowing console gaming and these pc handhelds are just extension of that.
Played Puzzle and dragons for like 3 years when mobile games where booming and spend like total of 300€ to it.
Honestly it was pretty good and did not feel nearly as predatory as many other mobile gatcha games I’ve played after that.
But it did kinda red pill me on F2P games, gatcha, fomo, peer pressure and many other manipulative methods these games use. The fact that Gungho ended up closing the servers down in Europe making people lose their accounts also showcased pretty well how temporary these games are.
Now if I’ll ever again play games with gatcha I’ll do no gatcha “challenge” run. It’s pretty good for gauging whether the game is actually any good and how fast you’ll hit the paywall.

Meanin no gatcha pulls other than maybe forced tutorial one. You’d have to make due with only characters and gear you can earn without gatcha. Premium currency earned by playing can be used for anything else but not for any gatcha.
I recall reading that even the tutorial gatcha pull is always the same.
Some of the F2P games are great especially if you cant afford new games. In some you can just ignore all cosmetics and focus on getting good. Hell make using default skins your identity and some gamers may get extra salty if they get their ass handed to them by someone using “noob skins”.
As for gatcha games it depends largely where the paywall is. If its in the late/endgame then you may very well get tens if not hundreds of hours of enjoyment before you get there. Some of them also shower you with premium currency early on to get you hooked so you might eventually end up with pretty good team to clear most of the content without spendi g a dime.
Yeah no gatcha is no gatcha, no wishes so you would have to make due with starter characters and stuff you can earn without pulls/wishes.
Its basically challenge run that also tests how good the game actually is without any gambling elements.
In Puzzle and Dragons it was possible to clear dungeons to get new characters and some where really good. It was also possible to use premium currency for continues allowing one to use brute force methods to clear dungeons. It was also possible to pair your leader with friends leader reducing the need for gatcha.

If one wants to play F2P games I would like to recommend the no gatcha challenge. Meaning no gatcha or any in-game purchases. Rewards from forced tutorial pulls can often be sold / deleted or if the first pull isnt random then that doesnt count.
For battle pass games with only cosmetics I encourage to only use default skins, emotes, avatars, frames or etc. It probably annoys a lot of people to get owned by someone wearing “noob” skins.
If the games are still good / enjoyable after these restrictions then they just might be actually good f2p games.
Pretty much any game with gatcha like the Hoyoverse games. These often have some sort of endgame paywall but it could take hours to reach it. If the game is bad or simply unplayable without gatcha its a bad game. Free premium currency can often be used for non-rng non-gatcha stuff.
Competitive games usually only have cosmetics so you can just use default skin, ignore battle pass and focus on getting good and having fun. Some people could even get salty for getting their ass handed to them by someome using default costume.
There are also plenty of decent Zelda-likes out there from small indie studios all the way to triple-a studios. Sony should really make one of their own looking at how well the managed to but pretty much everything Nintendo all at once to Astro bot.
It’s a funny gimmick but all the competitors already have support mouse and keyboard. You can also use them in some games like Sims 4 or Cities: Skylines.
But guess this mouse mode could also encourage 3rd party developers to add mouse and keyboard support for their games on consoles.
Solo Self-Found (SSF) is a thing in Path of exile and usually creating a standalone version like this requires some modifications to the game anyways for it to even run. For example developers behind Warhammer 40000: Inquisitor patched their game so that it can be played offline and even allows players to access old seasonal content (allows picking season when creating new character).
Personally I’ve only ever played POE solo and I think the game holds very well against many premium ARPG titles. When the game reaches its EOL as live service it would be very wastefull for GGG to just drop the game instead of turning it in to a paid standalone title that people can buy and play for as long as they want.
Probably most hours I’ve spend where with Conquer Online back in the days before mysteryboxes where introduced. After that probably puzzle and dragons.
Luckily after those games I learned to question my time spent in these games. (Basically just one day after grinding tower of gods for umpteenth time to spend my 1k stamina/energy, I asked myself wtf am I doing with my life, was I having fun?)
After that my most played games have been Grim dawn, Sacred2, Monster hunter world, No Man sky, Incredible adventures of van helsing then various 2d fighters like Blazblue, undernight inbirth and Granblue fantasy versus that I play on locals.
The title is a bit missleading considering that the actual article mentions a lot other problems that plagued the development.

While there’s still demand for “narrative-driven story-rich games” one should keep realistic expectations. For this genre I feel smaller scope and indie developers work much better.
Some of these could use “Nightdive” treatment like TimeSplitters trilogy.
Simple a PC version of the game with support for latest hardware and operating systems and support for LAN or self hostable multiplayer would give these games new life among people not interested in modern multiplayer games.
Many games already do this and I would like to give honorary mention to NeocoreGames who have done this to their Van Helsing and most recently with Warhammer Inquisitor. Latter one just recently got offline support with all past seasons playable.
I dont think its unreasonable to require even live services or mmos to have robust end-of-life plan that quarantees customers that the game will remain playable in some form or another.
Gameplay looks fine but also very similar to most triple-A action games on the market. Combat is fluid and cinematic meaning you can probably pull off all sorts of combos by mashing light and heavy attack buttons then do bunch of acrobatic moves to dodge any enemy attacks. You can probably also counter attacks execute all sorts of cool cinematic takedowns with single button or QTE.
But this often means that the combat lacks any sort of meaningful weight, emergent gameplay is non-existent and actual player choice is very limited and thightly controlled by what the game and level designers allow.
They’ve probably spend a lot of budget to make the combat in this game this fluid. However as a side effect the game has become even more of an action game with leveling and loot shoveled in than before. I just hope Bioware can pull off at least some level of build diversity with different classes, skills, items and abilities so that there will be at least some depth with character progression.
The trailer makes my eyes hurt so it’s a definate skip for me.
I mean the whole thing seemed to be animated exclusively with 3s or 4s which to me looks like the characters are micro-warping around instead of moving. When watching In to the Spiderverse and LOVE, DEATH & ROBOTS (SUITS) I literally had to take breaks and watch elsewhere so rest my eyes and this looks a lot worse.
The cutscenes hurt my eyes with the frame rate but the gameplay looks alright.
Honestly not fan of the the way some 3d animations animate with 2s/3s to create fake stop motion videos. It’s even worse when they try to make it look like a cartoon/anime and completely forget to add any smear frames that make the these animations look a lot smoother than they actually are. For me these look like characters constantly warping around instead of moving which hurst my eyes, luckily it seems to only affect the characters and not the movement camera.
The gameplay looks alright but very unoriginal, there’s seems to be this basic combat with dodging, light and heavy strikes and then these fly using streams of wind/magic/energy and energy hook-shot to get you exactly where developers want you to go. Maybe the theme, story and visuals will be enough to make this shine above the competition.
Was about to comment about the developers probably had to meet some diversity quota but the “hero shooter cast” sounds even more descriptive. Personally don’t really mind much if the gameplay is good and the game is free of the usual triple-a monetization shenigans.
But in a post Baldurs gate 3 world Bioware will need to work extra hard to meet the increased expectations.
Looks like more doom which is all right in my book. Now If they can keep out the always online and live service bullshit out of this one and focus on single player it might turn out to be yet another good doom game. Not sure about the dragon and mecha though, I would rather not have any vehicles, mounts and anything like that in Doom games.
If its a single player focused with no (or very minimal) live service bullshit then great.
If not then well there’s bunch of indie or classic boomer shooters I’ve not yet tried that are just that.
Honestly all these tech layoffs could really come bite back publishers and the big tech in the near future.
Theres a lot new talent for competitors to snatch and fraction of these developers might even form up new studios to make the next big thing.
Returning to a game you’ve left unfinished or just havent played in a long while can really feel like leaving ones comfort zone. Funny thing though is that its often a lot easier than one might think once you actually gather enough motivation to sit down to it.
When it comes to light rpg mechanics, those are usually designed so that you can’t really go wrong with them. They’re more of a problem when you’re a “minmaxer” looking to “optimize fun out of the game” as then it’s really easy to start overthinking about these things.
Personally I feel that games are just one form of entertainment among many, it’s not all that uncommon for people to have points in their life where binging tv-series or reading books can feel more novel and interesting. It’s also possible that one finds a new hobby or interest that develops in to a obsession taking most of the free time with it.
Sure as an adult you’ll have more responsibilities and less free time to play but I feel that at least for millenials and zoomers gaming in some form or another will persist throught our lives. For some it may be few hours a day, for others it may be few hours a month but it’ll still feel good to pick up that new/old title and have some fun.
The game will likely be a moderate success provided they can fix the performance problems.
Most players (unfortunately) do not care about having microtransactions in a full priced video games or about things like Denuvo. This is party the reason why the triple-a game industry is in such sorry state at the moment.
Also I find it funny that you’re already worrying about sequels when the newest game has not been out for even a day.
They’re still microtransactions in a full priced game which can break the trust between player and the developers/publishers.
Worst ones are probably the portcrystals and metamorphsis ones which both solve artificial problems created by the developers.
Honestly they’ve been on a steady decline in my eyes at least. With each and every new entry they’re becoming more and more like the rest of the Triple-A studios.
Sure many of their games are still decent fun if you can ignore:
Dark patterns
Microtransactions in full priced games
Battle passes
Denuvo
Personally I just can’t as mere existence of these thigns ruins my trust towards these developers/publishers.
I wish more players would just ignore these cosmetic microtransactions and go with the default skin or at least limit themselves to ones that can be obtained by actually achieving something in the game. Using default skin while outplaying people in competitive games could probably induce some people to make quite salty comments.
Torchlight 1-2 are decent fun for normal playthrough but plagued by bad design decisions and downright silly difficulty spikes on harder difficulties. Mods probably fix many of these issues but in vanilla the build diversity on harder difficulties is quite bad with only handful of viable builds with skill trees full of “trap skills”.

That approach works for some studios and some game projects but it’s no silver bullet. A lot of times gamers don’t know what they want until it’s handed on them on a silver platter which can make taking the correct kind of feedback really difficult. Sometimes outside influence may also stray the developers from their original vision.
That being said, developing game in complete secrecy for years and expecting it to become a success has pretty much the same chance as winning in a lottery. Getting MVP out there asap to see if the game will receive any sort of traction and feedback is generally the best approach unless it already has an audience (sequel or well known developer). It can be prototype, demo or early access as long as it’s something.
Hopefully this wont be full of microtransactions even of the cosmetic kind. Monster hunter world was amazing but Capcom has become more and more greedy for the past few years.
It’s probably really tempting for them to convert Monster Hunter franchise in to a modern live service with bunch of premium cosmetics, battle passes and Fomo traps. Exoprimal and Street Fighter VI are already suffering from these.
It has also secured an age 18 rating, with mention of violence and in-game purchases.
Hopefully they don’t get too greedy.

To Each Their Own I guess. Single player games tend to respect players time a lot more and thus usually require a lot less grinding or farming to complete. That being said Grim Dawn does have online multiplayer and community hosted seasons.
