Hey, y’all! Just another random, loudmouthed, opinionated, Southern-fried nerdy American living abroad.

I’m moving off kbin to lemmy, so I won’t be posting from here (unless kbin social gets it together).

Thing is, it didn’t ultimately have to release on series S. Larian could very well have decided it was too much work to get it to work, and Microsoft didn’t want Xbox left out of such a big release. I think as the generation goes on, you’re going to see a lot more devs and studios deciding or not worth all the extra cost to try to get a have running on S for an Xbox release, or games will get nerfed from the early development stage, unless Microsoft lighten up on their parity requirements.

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

So they’ll most likely decide to completely remove features from the Xbox releases rather than try to get them to work on S, which will lead to worse gaming options on the Xbox. Which Sony will absolutely love.

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

Thing is, it could’ve been ok if they’d put more RAM in it. It’s got less RAM than the One, which is what’s going to hurt it long term.

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

RAM feels like it’s the one thing they really shouldn’t have skimped out on, because that’s the one that’s going to affect longevity the most.

Oh trust, I’m complete aware of how badly Sony has been effing it up, so much that I’ve gone from being a strictly PS console gamer to a PC gamer.

You all hate discs until you have a library that you can rent games for free close to you.

It’s actually illegal where I live to rent out games. Thanks, Nintendo! (/^^)/⌒●~*

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

Japan. Nintendo got it passed into law years ago that game’s can’t be rented, because of supposed piracy concerns. But you can go to any video rental place and borrow all the music CDs you could want, because we all know how much more difficult it is to make mp3s from a CD than copy a game.

I watched a YouTube video where the guy played Cyberpunk on a PS4 from disc with no patches installed. It was as bad as you think.

That writer woke up and chose violence, and I approve.

And the capital G Gamers seem to be more bothered by pronouns, body types, female leaders, all the "replaced white people", etc. lol

Capital G Gamers were a mistake.

I’ve heard it described as wide as an ocean but deep as a puddle.

Japanese PC gaming saw another year of explosive growth (www.pcgamer.com)

Japanese gamers have continued to embrace the PC as a platform at staggering rates, jumping up 43% from 131.3 billion yen to 189.2 billion yen in 2022. That's a total size of about $1.3 billion US. The data comes from the latest report by Kadokawa ASCII Research Laboratories, an industry think tank which compiles yearly material...

I’ve started seeing the ROG Ally and, in bigger stores both it and the Steam Deck, in electronic stores over here recently.

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

Sony really shot itself in the foot with how it decided to prioritize the NA and EU market over Japan. PS5s were becoming readily available in those markets but were still so rare in Japan electronic stores were still doing lotteries for a chance to buy one - and then they raised the prices when you still couldn’t even get them yet here because of shortages. They’ve only recently become available over here, but not really - the electronics store near me only has the regular PS5 and not the diskless model. And I’m not in the middle of nowhere; this is in the middle of Osaka.

I bet a lot of folks here are like me - they just got sick of waiting and started PC gaming. Thanks to the pandemic, a lot of people who didn’t have PCs at home in 2019 ended up having to get them for WFH and online classes, so PC gaming became a lot more feasible than it had been.

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

I’ve seen them in Edion, an electronics chain, in Japan, and they seem to have a partnership of some kind with them - the first time you could do a hands-on anywhere in Japan was at an Edion in Osaka, and that’s where I’ve seen the physically on sale recently (as in, only in the last month or two). The only person I know with one ordered it online.

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

Gotta admit, if they pull something like that off and FF7R runs that smoothly on it, chances are high I’m going to get one if the weight isn’t too hefty. If it’s less than what a Steam Deck weighs (a Steam Deck is slightly too heavy for my weak fingers to manage), I’m sold.

Even the Banshees? That’s the one enemy that usually still makes people start cussing.

This article made a damn good point about how much gaming websites depend on guides now. It hasn’t really clicked until now with me. I follow a bot on Mastodon that posts new articles from a bunch of different gaming sites, and it seems like half of them are for guides and walkthroughs. That’s where they get their ad bucks from, so that and SEO are the big focus.

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

I just checked that gaming news Mastodon account I follow, and of the 20 most recent posts, 19 of them were guides.

It’s a touch trickier to upgrade a laptop, which the writer is talking about.

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

They’re also playing the games on their laptop for some reason, which is certainly an interesting choice for two of the biggest games of the year.

They might not actually have a choice about playing on a laptop if they normally play on a PS5. Baldur’s Gate isn’t out on PS5 yet and Starfield is Xbox/PC exclusive.

stopthatgirl7,

Microsoft did the right thing by softening their stance on system parity. Insisting on it would have hurt the Xbox further along the line, but now devs know they can still release on Xbox if they can’t get one or two features to run on the S.

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

They’re still trying to get it to work and are working with Microsoft engineers, from the last I heard.

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

Yeah, I had one of those happen that ended up spoiling something really big, along with really confusing the ever-loving daylights when it happened, because I had absolutely no idea what Gale was talking about, because he was referencing a quest I hadn’t actually started yet.

I’m going to put my currently playthrough on hold until patch 2. I don’t mind waiting a bit.

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

Where have I said a strong opinion on it other than pointing out art is political?! I’ve done a “yeah, but” and that’s it. 🤨

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

You sat there and said I shouldn’t have an opinion because I haven’t played, when you haven’t played either but get to have a strong opinion on it plus eye roll at Americans. My only opinion is, “eh, seems like they whiffed it instead of going into what they introduced,” and that’s based on a review I saw by a Brit. 🤨

stopthatgirl7,

I feel like the “disappointing sales” are more on SE than anything else, though. Like, they decided to only release on PS5 despite initially saying it would be PS5 and PC (and I’m just going to be charitable and ignore YoshiP telling someone asking about the PC release to just get a PS5, when PS5s were still damn near impossible to get in Japan), and even though PS5s had a really small install base (especially here in Japan - PS5s have recently become readily available, and even then, stock is limited - the electronics store near me is so completely out of stock of the digital version that they took down the display for that version and only have the disc drive version for sale).

I feel like SE has been making a lot of missteps lately.

And I’m not even going to touch the mess that is YoshiP’s reasoning for why his fantasy Europe was so dang un-melanated. That is a whole other issue. I’m just gonna say that as a non-white American living in Japan, a lot of folks in Japan have a very limited view of what an 欧米人 (European and American) is.

I post things I think people can talk about, even if I can’t actively take part in it. That’s it.

And if you don’t like what I post, you are more than welcome to block me - I actively encourage people blocking folks they don’t like. Please, feel free.

People are still hanging on to silly gamergate-era hate of Kotaku and get angry just seeing the name, and will go out of their way to argue why anything Kotaku says must be stupid and wrong. It’s wild.

The few times I post a Kotaku article, regardless of what it’s about, far too many folks just completely lose it screaming “click bait!” or completely blow off any points they might be making.

I was talking with a friend of mine who played the whole game last night, and they completely agreed with the idea that FF16 really had issues with how they handled slavery.

But oh wait, I forgot I can’t have an opinion because I didn’t play the game myself, as someone in here told me.

stopthatgirl7,

Please block me. I’d block you (actually, I will anyway), but blocking on kbin is busted and means you would still see and be able to comment on my posts. Hopefully they’ll fix that.
