Honestly, the game is exactly what I expected from all the pre-release info. It's a Bethesda RPG in space. I didn't expect a space sim, so I didn't expect any sort of dynamic streaming for seamless planetary transitions and the likes, because they very clearly stated that this wasn't a thing.
And the capital G Gamers seem to be more bothered by pronouns, body types, female leaders, all the "replaced white people", etc. lol
Seriously, stay away from the Steam forums folks.
Did they pay you to write this? Are you forcing yourself to enjoy the game because you paid so much? Or am I insane?
No need to go for insults just because you disagree with someone. I love this game so far, it’s been a great deal of joy. For full disclosure: I paid for the $30 USD upgrade package from the gamepass version of the game to get the early access and have not paid full price yet. If script extender mods don’t work on the gamepass version of the game, I expect to purchase he game on Steam for whatever price it is at that time.
I don’t disagree with you on several points, but that doesn’t mean a it’s bad game. As I already stated, I recommend the game and I feel it’s a good game.
Here are some of my thoughts:
The ships are cool but you don’t need it. You just fast travel with a loadingscreen everywhere anyway. I saw the inside of my ship twice in 10hrs (not counting the cockpit view).
One of the things they said repeatedly during pre-release media is that the game has so many aspects to it that you can ignore entire parts of the game by design.
Don’t care about ship combat? Then don’t take ship combat missions, that’s OK.
Don’t care about outpost management? Then don’t make outposts, that’s OK.
Not having to use your ship very often is a feature, not a bad thing. I’ve taken several combat missions and transport missions. I’ve messed around with smuggling a bit. I’ve explored around in my ship and gotten several random encounters. It’s a fun part of the game, but anyone who doesn’t enjoy it isn’t forced to go through it.
Navigating the menus are a nightmare. Inventory management is difficult.
This is probably my 2nd biggest complaint about the game. The UI design is, in my opinion, just not great to use on PC. It seems everything I want quick access to is about 2 menu levels deeper in than it should be…
Laziest intro I’ve ever seen. “Hello stranger, take my ship. No reason. Ok cool. Bye.”
Yeah, but this doesn’t represent the entirety of the game. Many of the quest lines have me very interested in them.
Performance is shit. I get 40fps in towns with a “UFO rated” computer on userbenchmark. Nvidia card.
This is probably my biggest complaint about the game. That said: I agree that the graphics/performance is not great, but please do not ever use nor support UserBenchmark. They are a joke, and cannot be trusted to actually review anything.
NPC’s teleporting around, getting stuck everywhere halfway through floor, corpses flopping around, ships clipping through stations.
I expect many people will tell you “It’s a Bethesda game and it’s to be expected,” and they’ll be right. But you’re also in the right to keep calling Bethesda out on it. Giving massive companies a free pass on these things isn’t ok.
That said, none of these glitches have broken the game for me. I’ve yet to had any game experience ruined by it. Most of them I chuckle at and then move on. If anything, I think it adds charm to the game. One of my favorite things to do in Skyrim was put pots on people’s heads and watch them walk around, or to shout at them and watch their plates get stuck in a chair and vibrate around. (I’ll refrain from commenting about certain Starfield-related shenanigans for spoiler reasons.)
I was never arguing that it would be effortless, but easier. I also feel like the marketing budgets are kind of beside the point here of development costs, but hey, generative AI might help with that too.
Even your examples of it being done different are still the highest profile releases from that company, not some quirky novel idea. They were betting big on FFXV when they released that, and they are doing this for FFVII these times.
I don’t know, they also released Diofield Chronicle, Triangle Tactics, and Octopath Traveler were smaller budget games with no pre-existing IP that were also pretty experimental. What they make may not be your “psychological surreal point-and-click adventure game”, but it might be something just as adventurous.
A mainstream fairly well funded sequel to a cult classic owned by a company that has yet to develop anything even close to the same quality as a janky pre-release third-party source game that has switched developers at least once now?
…I’m sure it will be fine, it’s not like there’s at least two other examples of that exact scenario failing miserably.
More concerning than Bethesda’s decision to withhold early review codes from certain outlets is how heavily some sites are relying on the game to drive their business.
Expecting anything that particularly in-depth without being shown explicit pre-release footage of it is an expectation trap. Bethesda was never going to make a space sim, any space sim features are a bonus and were far from guaranteed.
I can understand the link between seamless exteriors and the equivalent of what that would mean in the context of a space game for Bethesda, but the technological implications of having a galactic system flight mode and seamless planet to space transitions are both completely new ideas to Bethesda and are also technically complex to implement in a game already knee deep in new tech and systems only from what we'd been shown.
There's a reason things like seamless planet transitions are only something you might be able to expect in recent years. While Bethesda could totally make that happen, it's not where I'd expect them to put their money, or they'd have probably dropped a line showing it off in the pre release footage.
At once, I understand why you might've expected that, but expecting anything not explicitly shown is never a good idea when it comes to tempering expectations.

There’s no reason for studios to behave better when they get a bazillion pre-orders and games make a profit before they’re even released. When that dynamic is in play there will always be an army of MBAs who point out that the purpose of the company is hyped releases and everything else is strictly secondary.
So to sum up, I agree. I won’t be touching this until it’s mature, stable, and on sale.
I found Fallout 4's shooting night and day better than NV and 3's. It's a shame you didn't feel that. It's still definitely RPG shooter territory which is a lot harder to make feel satisfying than a conventional FPS, but the movement still didn't feel very good, certainly.
Moment to moment feel is definitely a strong issue from previous Bethesda titles. I'm confident Starfield will feel better, but how much better is impossible to tell until we can get our hands on it or there can be some common discussion about it after release. The manicured, manufactured movements of pre release gameplay make it very hard to tell how that stuff has changed aside from their claims of redone animations systems.
Am I crazy or has there been almost no pre-release coverage of this game?
Oblivion and Fallout 3 are two of my all-time favourite games (I’ve played the others as well but those 2 stuck with me the most) but I just cannot get hyped for this game. It’s like a black box with people’s hopes and dreams, and it feels like people are just hyping themselves up by imagining what could be inside it.
I couldn’t imagine pre-ordering this game in particular. Beth has been so quiet I’m worried it may just be a total flop.
Man I wish I could even get a consistent impression out of anyone. I’ve been scrounging for pre-release footage but Beth is being weirdly tight lipped about this one.
100% a wait for the reviews situation, the less they show off the more I worry they’re hiding something. Just a reminder to everyone, Fallout 76 was the last game they released…
To me, the biggest improvement in BG3 is how much looser the gameplay progression is. Since being just two levels behind meant death was all but certain in D:OS2, the path even on an “open” map like the Reaper’s Coast was still very much on rails. XP gain was so tight that side quests weren’t really optional, even to the point of discouraging roleplay by doing things like passing persuasion checks and then killing everyone anyway to squeeze every last drop out of the map. The first D:OS also really struggled with this until later in the game.
BG3’s first large map is a little tight, but even a new player can easily go off script and pick and choose what quests they want to undertake once they hit level 5. Encounters with enemies two levels higher can still be comfortable after that point, even three higher if the player has a good party build or has mastery of the battle system. And the player will want to, because the game is huge. It’s such a delight to just go, and it’s exciting to see Larian turn a major weakness into a strength.
But essentially, BG3 meets or improves upon every system in D:OS2. The dialogue scenes are the most flashy improvement, supported well by good writing, voice acting, and mocap. The only thing I found to be a step back was the soundtrack. I don’t think it’s bad, and there are some standout songs for sure, but D:OS2 really excelled in that area both in terms of the quality of the music and how it was used in battle (but then I’m a sucker for cello). It also won’t compare favorably to D:OS2 in its current state in terms of polish, but D:OS2 wasn’t exactly bug-free on release, either.
A big part of why this game is so big in the zeitgeist right now is because Larian was able to pounce on a lull in the release schedule. I’d call the pre-release hype for this game average at worst for that reason alone. Early reviews were beyond glowing, marking a studio’s successful graduation to AAA development with a game that has no aggressive add-ons or DRM. That will spur gaming enthusiasts to generate all the marketing you need.
How has this thread been up for half a damn day and no one has mentioned the Borderlands series (Smoogy@kbin.social at least mentioned Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep, but that was just a Borderlands 2 DLC which got re-released as a standalone.)
My wife and I put tons of hours into most of the the Borderlands series. I recommend playing them in release order.
Borderlands is a fun shoot n’loot that’s got a loose plot, but it’s not terribly deep. It’s like a sci-fi road warrior feel. It’s a fun co-op game with plenty of DLC and replay value. My personal favorite.
Borderlands 2 is all the fun of the first but they went all in on the writing and voice acting as well. It’s tons of fun. Arguably the best of the series in every aspect. It’s also tons of fun in couch co-op.
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is the third game but canonically it’s the second. It’s the same concept but with new anti-gravity mechanics and lasers. It’s like Mad Max on the moon. I believe this started life as a DLC for BL2 before Gearbox decided to turn it into a fully fledged standalone game.
Borderlands 3: It was a fun game with some really great level design, but the writing seemed forced. Worth a playthrough to see where they take the storyline.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands - Borderlands meets DnD. A spin-off of the aforementioned Assault on Dragon Keep DLC. The game itself is a lot of fun, but it’s a miserable split screen co-op experience thanks to the terrible menu and inventory management system.
Never ever ever buy a game until after reviews come out. It’s not worth it. It doesn’t matter if it’s from a legendary game studio, they can find all of the developers, they could fire all of the managers, and still be called the same thing. The name is no guarantee of anything.
Pre-ordering games had a point back when they were mostly physical, because if you didn’t, you ran the risk of them running out. Although I didn’t pre-order GTA V, and just walked into a game store on the day of release and bought two copies, so since then I’ve rather been of the opinion that even with physical products, it’s probably not very likely they’re going to run out.
But now everything’s digital there’s 100% no reason to pre-order. Make them make the actual product they claimed to have made.
This is a huge win for piracy. You can’t image how many kids these days don’t know about piracy. They share account passwords, and split the costs to stream legally, up until the password sharing crackdown. Now, imagine what would happen if you inform them that these evil pirates get everything for free, without geo-blocking, without multiple services to get everything you want, and even pre-release. And inform them to be careful about malware. Man, they gonna research piracy and how to avoid malware in their free time and enjoy piracy to the fullest. Rights Alliance trains the new generation of pirates in Denmark.
I’m trying to get the last few cards in the pokemon trading card game on switch, I’ve been cheating with the rewind feature which has made life slightly less painful but it seems to pre calculate your coin flips so not as powerful as it could be, also played some tabletop simulator and started doing dragon riding races in WoW as part of that event. It’s been a crazy year for releases so it’s nice having some downtime

Thanks for pointing this out. I use Baldurs Gate 3 Mod Manager too and make sure to follow the advice of the second pinned comment here every time I save my new load order. I don’t know if it’s necessary to use the mod fixer mod itself when you do that, but I have it installed just in case and every mod that isn’t pre-release or broken works for me with no further issues!
