HubertManne, w [UPDATE] Issues with the functioning of kbin.social
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

Thank you so much ernest. I was able to go to my subscriptions, and all, and notifications today and look at them by all and all the normal stuff. For a second there I thought there was something going on!!!

@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

I always assume that repeat errors on the user end means significantly more to deal with on your end, but it's clear you're doing your best to keep everything going, so I try my best not to get frustrated lol

Hope you've managed to have some time to enjoy the holidays despite all of this!

Ernest I can't read my memes this is an all hands on deck emergency

kubica, w Issues with the functioning of kbin.social
@kubica@kbin.social avatar

I've read that there are problems with lemmy's federation itself ( https://kbin.social/m/fediverse@lemmy.world/t/735134/It-s-been-six-days-since-a-potential-fix-for-the )
Do you think kbin suffering from side effects or maybe are there other problems?

tiredofsametab,

Yeah, I'm curious about this as well

IggyTheSmidge,
DarkThoughts,

That's the one I saw as well. Would be nice to have that confirmed or denied.

ernest, w Last few days are the least functional kbin has been for me since the July exodus. Just me?
@ernest@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, It's true. Since Sunday, I've been noting errors that I'm still working on resolving. It doesn't make it easier that it's the post-holiday period, and due to travels and security measures, it's not the easiest task. I'm working to get everything back to normal as soon as possible.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@kbin.social avatar

Thanks for putting in all this work, especially over a period that's traditionally vacation time. Make sure you're striking a good work/life balance, if you can get the site basically functional (as it appears to be now) don't sweat the small stuff. :)

LollerCorleone,
@LollerCorleone@kbin.social avatar

Thanks for all the hardwork you are putting in! In the long term, you could consider setting up a kbin.social status page?

Pamasich, w Is the Kbin source outdated compared to kbin.social?

I believe mbin stopped merging kbin changes, probably either when they had their fallout with ernest where he pushed unfinished code that caused issues, or when he started his refactoring which I've seen some mbin contributors dislike because it requires changes on their side too.

Either way, there's definitely features missing on mbin that I know are in the kbin source, like the sort options on profiles. Collections are definitely there too.

when in theory they all use 0.10.1

First of all, there's no way this is true for mbin. It's a fork, it has its own versions.
Fedidb says most instances of mbin (on its first page of instances) use version 1.5.3, though kbin.melroy.org uses 1.6.0.

But also, hasn't kbin been 0.10.1 since forever even before ernest added all the new features? I don't think that version string means much if anything.

originalucifer,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

one of the reasons i jumped to mbin was actual versioning. to me it highlights the maturity of this particular development process, and kbin seems haphazard at best. also the communication coming out of the kbin dev group is basically non-existent and the kbin.social server management has been set to ron popeil.

1.6.0 is the next, impending release for mbin.

originalucifer, w Is the Kbin source outdated compared to kbin.social?
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

is kbin still under development?

Facni,

Theoretically yes, but in practice it is a different case. I have hope.

Pamasich,

We don't really know. Supposedly it is, ernest just isn't pushing the code to codeberg, instead keeping it locally. He has mentioned before he's going to push the latest changes (though he never did that), so it sounds like there do exist changes not reflected on the repository yet. But I have no idea how things went since then.

CoffeeAddict,
@CoffeeAddict@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, it’s been a while since Ernest has posted anything, and I don’t think he has uploaded any new code in a while. I wonder if there was a roadblock somewhere?

Ernest also said he was having health issues so I hope he’s doing okay.

Indy, w Can we help against spammers?

Starting to feel like there's more SPAM than posts on Kbin, at this point.
I sort by new and comb through reporting "SPAM" and blocking users, but it's a never-ending cycle it seems and users reported for SPAM are still posting (hence why I block them in addition to reporting the individual posts).

BaldProphet, w I'm seeing more microblog posts
@BaldProphet@kbin.social avatar

It's been a feature at least since the Reddit protest last year, which is when I started using kbin.

Kierunkowy74,
@Kierunkowy74@kbin.social avatar

It was available from day one of kbin.social. And even earlier.

CharlesReed, w Lemmy.world has gone read only to us

Well that explains why a couple threads I posted weren't gaining any traction. I hope the issue gets figured out soon, otherwise I'll have to use my Mbin alt for anything lemmy.world related.

fiat_lux, w Are we cut off?

Many of us are getting banned from other instances because there is a bug where kbin is sending way too much traffic per interaction. I know that was affecting federation (according to other instance admins) so It might have something to do with that. The content on kbin does seem to me like it's not in sync at all, but I haven't measured it.

All we can really do for now is hope for a fix and not interact with posts from other instances.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

I saw some comments around this and did seem about the same time the 404's started. maybe thats it.

e0qdk, w Are we cut off?
@e0qdk@reddthat.com avatar

This post made it over to reddthat, so your posts are federating out.

Checking over on my kbin account as well, I can see content in /newest from multiple sources. /sub returns 404 but I think that’s just a caching bug (adding ?p=1 to the end of the URL lets me workaround it).

e0qdk,
@e0qdk@kbin.social avatar

It took about a minute for my comment from reddthat to show up here, but it looks like it made it through ok, so inbound comments are working. (Note: replying to myself from my kbin account)

e0qdk,
@e0qdk@reddthat.com avatar

And I got the response from kbin back on reddthat fine. Seems like communication is working.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

thanks. I actually was seeing something similar at the start of the weekend but it sorta reveresed on me where sub works and newest gives me the 404. I have been looking through my sub and I am seeing lemmy mags. Thanks for the feedback.

Dymonika, w kbin.social/sub says 404 page not found. Does anyone else have this issue?

I can't even upvote comments; it moves to an "error"-showing webpage entirely. EDIT: Okay, now I can, but just a moment ago it wasn't working, repeatedly...

static, w Do the "Ernest needs to add more maintainers to KBin!" comments remind anyone else of the xz social engineering malarkey?
@static@kbin.social avatar

xz was successful because it was believable, but a malicious actor would more likely target libraries that are depended on by many, like xz.

wjrii, w Do the "Ernest needs to add more maintainers to KBin!" comments remind anyone else of the xz social engineering malarkey?
@wjrii@kbin.social avatar

Yes, there is some similarity. You're not wrong.

However, it's much more likely to be due to the common experience of solo devs whose projects blow up than it is about bad actors on kbin.

If you're so inclined, you can always check the profiles of those who were pushing for it and particularly those who were volunteering; the boehs.org link should supply some helpful red flags to look for. Ernest would be wise to check IP activity and even ask for IRL credentials of those he would consider giving any real level of access to. Beyond that, it's firmly in the realm of "mildly interesting."

HarkMahlberg,
@HarkMahlberg@kbin.social avatar
