worfamerryman, w 'We haven't started on an expansion' to Baldur's Gate 3, Larian says, but it's not completely off the table

I installed the game to check it out. I have a very busy week so I just played through the tutorial section at the start of the game.

Im not saying it doesn’t look go, but why does this game have such high hardware requirements?

DarkThoughts,

The minimum requirements are a freaking RX 480. How is that high? I can literally max it out with my 6650 XT on 1080p.

worfamerryman,

Ohh, thanks. I guess I got this confused with another game or maybe I misread min and recommended specs.

SyperStronkHero,
@SyperStronkHero@kbin.social avatar

The biggest requirement, imo, is probably just having an SSD for the game. There's a LOT of pop ins and textures that just don't load until a few minutes later. It does have a "slow HDD mode" but it hasn't really done much from what I can see.

DarkThoughts,

That's pretty normal for modern AAA games. There's just a lot of texture streaming going on and that requires a lot of bandwidth that HDDs don't have. You can be lucky if it is just blurry textures & pop in and not also strong stuttering.

SyperStronkHero,
@SyperStronkHero@kbin.social avatar

I've gotten away with even harder to run games on a HDD but even if it is on an SSD, I've found it to be inconsistent plus only BG3 acts up compared to everything else I have going.

conciselyverbose,

It does run on steam deck (though at lower settings with FSR to get 40 mostly stable).

Open world games with some complexity generally take a decent amount of power. You have to load a good number of surrounding objects at any given time, with a pretty wide view on the zoomed out view. There are also other characters/animals doing stuff, environmental effects, and a healthy dose of passive checks on the environment against various traits of your party to see if your character identifies any of the secrets all over the world.

worfamerryman,

The steam deck is so amazing. I’m so close to pulling the trigger on one, but am wondering if I should wait for a cpu upgrade.

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

One of my coworkers got one recently and absolutely loves it. I really want one, but I’m waiting until the next version eventually comes out, since the current one is slightly too heavy for me to hold easily.

worfamerryman,

I too am waiting on the next version. I need a new phone and laptop before I can think about a steamdeck. So hopefully a new one will be out by the time I am ready to buy it.

stopthatgirl7,
!deleted7120 avatar

I figure they’re going to learn a lot from the current steamdeck and the next version will be amazing.

Atralyx,

Support the Steam Deck, Valve is doing everything right. Right to repair, virtually all parts replaceable, Linux, Rma's to name a few. Not to mention it's a monster of a small machine, it could very well be a desktop replacement as well as a portable gaming system.

worfamerryman,

I’ll totally get a steam deck over any other handheld, just wondering if waiting for a steam deck with better cpu is the right choice.

I’m not in a position to buy it today anyway.

Eggyhead, w Linux passes Mac for Steam's second-most used OS, possibly due to Steam Deck

Even if Apple magically did everything right for gaming on Mac, I wouldn’t be inclined to use the client Steam built for Mac.

massive_bereavement,
@massive_bereavement@kbin.social avatar

I did try gaming in a Mac, and it seems like Apple was trying everything to make it as unpleasant as possible (e.g., the opengl fiasco).

Eggyhead,
@Eggyhead@kbin.social avatar

I’ve been using Mac for decades and have yet to have a particularly pleasant gaming experience with it, although I don’t generally go looking for it anymore. Last I tried, I bought FF XIV “FOR MAC” and it couldn’t run on my MBP, which was the latest model at the time. It would run if I had an older OS running though. And to top it off, I wasn’t even allowed a refund for the mistake, because it was a problem with WINE and not square’s fault. I decided Mac games weren’t worth the frustration at that point.

I personally just don’t buy Squeenix software any longer. They’ve abandoned too many titles (mostly on mobile, but elsewhere too) and I just don’t feel good about giving them money. Last one I purchased was FF14 for the PC (which is one of the best MMOs I’ve played).

That’s just my take on things. If it happens to show up on Epic for free or Game Pass (unlikely on both, I know), then sure I’ll grab it to try.

crystalcorvid, w Final Fantasy 16 sales did not meet high expectations, says Square Enix president

It's a surprise to no one that Square is disappointed in sales numbers. As the article says near the end they are infamous for being disappointed with not meeting very unrealistic targets. I don't own a PS5 to play it on, they haven't been in stock locally consistently. But from everything I've seen about the game, it's a middling to good game. So middling to good sales numbers should make them happy. And from what I can tell the numbers say that it's selling better than that.

Athena5898, w Final Fantasy 16 sales did not meet high expectations, says Square Enix president

It's Square, they wouldn't of been happy unless it sold as much as Tear of The Kingdom

Nefyedardu,

Final Fantasy in it's heyday outsold Zelda by a lot

Homeschooled316,

The PS1 also sold the N64 3:1, But FF7, the highest selling FF game, only sold about 9m to OoT’s 7m. Relative to console sales, oot thrashed final fantasy 7. Of course, it helps that they cranked these games out way faster than Zelda back then.

The current situation is similar, except the switch is wildly more prevalent than the PS5. There is almost 1 TotK sold for every 6 switch units, which is utterly insane when you consider how many ignored/lost/broken units are probably out there. By contrast, there is about 1 FF16 for every 10 PS5 units out there.

Nefyedardu,

These are the numbers I found for 5th and 6th gen games:
FFVII: 10.0
FFVIII: 8.6
FFX: 8.5
Ocarina of Time: 7.60
Wind Waker: 6.79
Majora's Mask: 6.82

FFIX: 5.5
FFX-2: 5.4
Oracle of Seasons & Oracle of Ages: 3.99
Minish Cap: 1.76

So maybe "a lot" is an overstatement, but they did generally sell more. You have a point regarding sales-per-console, but also remember PS1 had over 1900 games to N64s 388. That's way more competition for third party FF games to get sales. Many people that buy Sony consoles don't even look twice at JRPGs, whereas most people that buy Nintendo consoles know day one they are going to get the latest Mario and Zelda.

Athena5898,

sure, but the series and Square are by far very different than they were in it's heyday. Square has really been racking its players over the coals with shitty tactics lately and has signaled pretty loud and clear that they don't care about games at all and are just trying to get money out of you (I mean all major companies are like that, the others are just better at it and shut up about it) I said Tears of the Kingdom because it's the current high selling game, that's what they wanted this game to be and I honestly don't know why you'd even hope for something like that when handling business the way they do. (as people have mentioned they'd play it but do not have the system.)

Nefyedardu,

No I agree. The fact that Final Fantasy used to outsell Zelda and now sells 1/3rd of it should speak volumes about how Square has handled the franchise. Gaming has only gotten bigger since the late 90s.

Athena5898,

agreed

I’m kinda surprised to see the hate this game is getting.

I’m probably 80% ish of the way through and while I wouldn’t say it’s my GOTY or anything, it’s fun. I appreciate the different direction they took, and the combat is just straight up fun.

The side quests do suck. Some of the zones are absolutely bland and consist of nothing but wide open space and random enemies just kinda… peppered in there. The Eikon battles are cool and pretty and badass but gameplay-wise they are boring. So yeah, it’s not a masterpiece, but I’m enjoying it.

some_guy, (edited )
@some_guy@kbin.social avatar

Lol nobody in this thread is hating on it. You must be seeking out negative opinions if you’re seeing them, because everything Ive chanced across has been middle of the road to positive about the game.

Nefyedardu,

Wasn't a fan of the gameplay at all. It's in a kind of no man's land where it isn't an RPG but it's also nowhere near as good as DMC or Bayonetta. It's just so damn easy to button mash through everything. There is depth there if you want to explore it but it's a flaw in the game design that you are not actually incentivized to do that.

Turkey_Titty_city, w Final Fantasy 16 sales did not meet high expectations, says Square Enix president

FF games have been crap since 10. I bought 15 on discount and was completely disappointed at how bland and lifeless the entire experience was. They have taken the series too far into MMO land, and need to go back to focusing on a good story with good characters, rather than a 'open world' with fancy graphics and lifeless characters.

13 was also a incomprehensible joke of a story, which they padded out to become even more absurd with the sequels.

soapysloth73,

It’s interesting you say that because this entry isn’t particularly “open world”. It’s actually fairly linear with a focus on the story and characters.

The MMO comparison is still fair though because the zones are very reminiscent of FF14. They all connect to each other and can be re-visited, but you’re not really free roaming a giant open world.

Side quests are also 14-like and I don’t mean that as a compliment. Go to A to talk to B. Go to C to talk to D. That can mostly be skipped though.

meanwhile, Baldur’s Gate 3…

Nefyedardu,

Yeah it makes no sense. "Let's ditch turn-based combat for and even more niche genre, character action! Surely this will make us more money, right?"

ophy,

A Spinoff CRPG Final Fantasy game would actually be really interesting, and a funny way to go full circle with how much the original FF1 drew from the likes of DnD.

ophy,

They have taken the series too far into MMO land, and need to go back to focusing on a good story

You say that as though FF14 doesn’t have one of the best stories of modern Final Fantasy games.

harmonea,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

You're not wrong, but a lot of people aren't willing to invest the subscription fee and the hundreds of hours they'd need to see that for themselves. And even as someone who's all caught up on 14, I honestly can't blame them. Time is precious, and it's asking for a lot.

Raji_Lev,
@Raji_Lev@kbin.social avatar
