With the amount of high quality demanding games coming out, I’m 100% sure my 6800XT will be able to play what I want until then.

commissar_whiskers, w Devs on Unity Runtime Fee: "The trust is gone forever"

Didn’t they see Hasbro trying the same thing? Sure, DnD itself is doing fine, but they lost the trust of third party publishers.

Gullible,

Could I get a digestible version of the dnd drama? I could never parse what was happening.

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

DnD 5e had a license for use that allowed 3rd party companies to make stuff for the game following specific rules, and they did so which of course helped with increasing the popularity of the brand. This license existed due to the backlash from players and 3rd party developers who did not like the 4e licensing which was ridiculously restrictive.

Then WotC/Hasbro decided they wanted more control and put out a draconian revision and also tried to invalidate the existing license using questionable legal logic that wouldn't stand up in court, but would be cost prohibitive for the 3rd party companies to fight in court. This revision also included licensing costs that would drive 3rd party companies out of business. Then they did a revision that tried to make creating a virtual tabletop that could be used with DnD a violation to try and corner the market for WotC's completely non-existent virtual tabletop.

Basically they tried to stop doing the thing they had in place for like a decade to milk an unrealistically high amount of money out of companies that were working with them and tried to force this on extremely short notice. So same thing as reddit and now Unity are doing.

Expect the next version of DnD to be a walled garden again like 4e was and most likely fade out of the public view again.

AngryCommieKender,

The true irony here is that TSR went bankrupt because they tried to mess with the community content licenses that were basically gentleman’s agreements at the time, allowing WotC to purchase D&D in the first place with 3rd edition. I hope they sell the property to someone that understands how to run that golden goose, without expecting unlimited growth.

friek,

Paizo. Been playing Pathfinder for years.

AngryCommieKender,

Paizo wouldn’t exist for over a decade when TSR sold D&D to WotC. Try again.

commissar_whiskers,

And it’s not just me right? This is similar. Revising existing licensing to squeeze more money out of people who already use their back end.

LoafyLemon, w Doom Studio id Software is Seemingly Working on new Version of its Game Engine - id Tech 8

ID Software are Vulkan wizards. Absolute mad lads.

mojo,

I know you’re talking about the rendering software, but vulkan wizard sounds like a dope DnD class

Weirdfish, w The Elder Scrolls VI Is at Least Five Years Away, and Is Likely to Launch on PC, Xbox Series X|S Only

I’ve always been a fan, but no way I’m buying a second system just for Bethesda games.

Yes, I bought a switch to play Zelda, but that’s where I draw the line.

Skyrim has released on basically every platform that exists, I have to assume Starfield, and ES6, will eventually release on PS5. That is just too much money to leave on the table.

On the other hand, Demon Souls was spawned out of a failed PS exclusive to go head to head against Oblivion, and I’d dare say the souls series have given more to gaming than the past decade of Bethesda releases.

citrusface, w The Elder Scrolls VI will skip PS5 and isn’t coming until at least 2026

Why is this news?

Did anyone think after Starfield this would be coming out any time soon at all? Youre kidding yourself if you did.

I have had one since hour 12, I’ve changed ships multiple times, been all over, still following. It’s basically a space buddy now, I’m on hour 96

doleo, w A quarter of Starfield players couldn’t even be bothered to finish the first mission

For what it’s worth, I am one of these people. I’d already watched a couple of streamers play random sidequests, but when I saw the early game I just couldn’t stomach playing any further.

"Trust" won't matter if they just continue writing new games in it.

Hardeehar,

Who would want to write new games for a company that can just screw you later?

Not just “can” but, from statements from the CEO, still plan to… just a little later.

Probably enough people to keep Unity afloat. Let's be honest, who's going to reskill their gamedevs to learn Godot or some other game engine? Decision makers will probably spend more money on trying to find ways around the problem than actually solving it aka using another game engine.
It's what they do.

weedwhacking, w Diablo 4 Twitch viewership continues to drop as Diablo 3 overtakes it

This game is the worst money I ever spent. It is what truly made me learn the hard way about buying on launch day

Swim,

kinda bummed i bought so many skins, really hope they turn the ship around

SatansMaggotyCumFart,

If you buy more it’ll be more fun

  • Blizzard
Swim,

i tried that, it didnt work.😭

SatansMaggotyCumFart,

That’s because you haven’t bought enough

  • Blizzard
sTeco,

You are the reason blizzard gets away with releasing uninished games, whose only purpose is to maximizes sales beyond the base game

JokeDeity,

You understand people like you are DIRECTLY the cause of games these days sucking ass right? You guys buy games before they’re out and then buy up all their microtransaction bullshit, so why would they ever worry about improving or trying any harder when they know they have guaranteed money in the bank? Until people like you quit throwing money at this stuff, it’s only going to continue to decline.

Swim,

i am the cause of your unhappiness and i will continue to microtransact. blizzard only got a small fraction of what i spend on games. get a job pleb

JokeDeity,

I didn’t say I personally was being hurt by you, I said you are being hurt by you, I’m not affected by this directly. I don’t buy games until they’ve been out for a year at least and I don’t buy microtransactions regardless of the amount of money in my account, on principle. So you’re only serving to destroy your own future gaming. Also, I’ve never seen someone tell someone else to get a job that wasn’t secretly just living off their parents. Have a good one.

Swim, (edited )

i appreciate your concern for my wellbeing but its misplaced.i also havent seen someone care so much about how others spend their money.

JokeDeity,

That’s just how my brain works, given any topic I’m going to suggest to you a way to save money on it.

Swim,

unsolicited advice due to personal issues, got it.

JokeDeity,

Not disagreeing there. It’s problematic at times.

tuxed,

If you don’t mind, could you explain why one would want to buy these kinds of microtransactions, especially if you don’t even enjoy the game? I just cant understand it, but obviously people enjoy it or the business model wouldn’t work.

No judgement here, just genuinely curious.

Swim,

i like the game? its just lackimg content at the moment

Sinnz,

At least the main story questline was good

weedwhacking,

Except it really wasn’t :( I couldn’t even get past the first act I was so bored. Diablo 3 had one of the most compelling stories I had high hopes for

ramblinguy,

I was with you until you said diablo 3 had one of the most compelling stories. I don’t think diablo games in general are good at storytelling. But I do agree with you that the d4 story kinda sucked

sturmblast,

I made the same mistake having false confidence in Diablo yet again I haven’t played it since the first week

kibiz0r, w Unity reportedly considering cap on hugely controversial per-install fees

“Okay, I know you weren’t too happy about my plan to retroactively charge you for every mile you drive in the car I already sold you… What if I told you, I’ll only charge you for a maximum of… uh… 30,000 miles per year?”

Is the cap $0?

Cabrio, w Diablo 4 Twitch viewership continues to drop as Diablo 3 overtakes it

After witnessing one of the most successful RPG releases in recent history

They better be referring to the release of BG3, because if they’re talking about D4…

Successful in terms of cash, which I’d imagine is the most common metric people look for. Now whether gamers will look back on bg3 or d4 more fondly? You decide!!

Lord_Logjam, w A quarter of Starfield players couldn’t even be bothered to finish the first mission

I would have liked to have finished the first mission but the game crashes after roughly 5 minutes every time I try to play. Sort it out Bethesda.
